Shores of Hell better quality than Inferno?

Recommended Posts

I've always found E2 and E3 much of a muchness: overall a similar sort of feel and style of gameplay. Neither excited me all that much though.

If forced, I'd go for E3. It has a less lame secret level, and the episode can in principle be completed pacifist-style.

To last user: there are two 'wow's (!wow! and wow :)

I just don't know why everyone likes E1. Like, it's way too easy. Sure it's beautiful, but once I get to level 6 things become terribly boring. Anticlimax...

There's also a porn wad called wow! (just one exclam), which I presume is the one he meant.

BTW, I'm not a great E1 fan either. It was not until Doom2 that I found the game truly exciting.

Hmm, I would have never put this more simply.

i always like episode 4 the best. hard and atmospheric, with big levels with little puzzels. but i think Doom 2 owns it all.

From best to least (all are good but there can be only one winner ;) )
Doom 2 > E2 > DooM64 > E1 > E3 > E4

If I have first played E1 then I play E2 and after that I play E3, then I'll start getting bored into E3 and it will feel bad. If I just play E3 without having played the other episodes some couple hours before, it's really fun.

Doom 2 is/was crap. It will forever be a compilation of terrible to mediocre levels pumped out by the people at id software not involved with better projects.

DOOM II? Romero's maps there are as good as his DOOM maps, Petersen's maps aren't worse than the ones he did for DOOM, and McGee's maps are about as good as Hall's maps as they stood when DOOM was released, in their way.

I'd say I like Shores of Hell a bit more than Inferno because of some particular maps, but overall they are about equally fun as episodes.

To be specific, E2 might seem much more challenging, because of the boss character's unique properties. Statistics on many FAQs show that the Cyberdemon has a 1000 more health points than the Spider Mastermind...Meaning that instead of 3 BFG blasts to knock him out, you'll usually need to make 4 BFG blasts.

If you take the properties of the boss characters aside, then both episodes will be pretty much an equal challenge.

There is no BFG in E2, so whether you need 4 or 3 shots is pretty irrelevant.

Oops. My bad.
Thanks for correcting.
It's obvious that I haven't been playing the originals in a long time.
But either way, the Cyberdemon has always been tougher and always took longer time to get disposed of.

Something about me and !wow!.wad and porno

Well, i meant the one where it's a room, and there's the cyb pit that you have to go into and kill the bastard. Made by some guy while he was smoking something that's grown on the planet Neptune.

That's wow.wad (no exclam).

!wow!.wad was a serious map by Jon Landis. It's in the archive under the filename 1wow1.zip, because there's nowhere in the archive's hierarchy for files starting with non-alphanumeric characters to go.

Hmm..

E1 is the best in atmosphere in looks, first levels of Doom2 are also good in atmosphere (browny sky...) but the rest of the stuff sucks. E2 is better than e3, however in the PSX version there's not much difference between the levels, but they are certainly better (even in texturing).

However to be hoenst I hate stock Doom levels. Thank God for all the better pwads out there. My first megawad was Memento mori and an addon level that I downloaded first was Canyon.wad by Derek (dunno, some Derek :)

Good to know I'm not the only one who feels that way.

For me:

E1>D64>>E2>E4>>E3>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Doom 2

... but he was so right. Except for a small number of levels most of them were shit and the only good thing about the game were the new monsters.

Hey sorry for being a newbie, but wtf is E4? Is it a wad or a secret episode? I returned fairly recently into the world of Doom out of nostalgic instincts and now I'm pretty confused with everything around here, not to mention stuff that exceeds the original game (all the wads that I haven't yet tried). Fill me in please?

As for me, I can't say which episode is better, but I'd choose E2. The boss level is cooler, you have that fear of the cyberdeamon and you can't find him at first... Then there's the secret level which is pretty cool when done from scratch. Yeah, I like simplicity... But E3 also has a very cool secret level, that one shocked me when I played it first time :D. Also how do you guys finish E3L8 from scratch!? There are no BFGs and the spider mastermind hits you even if you move which is a pain. You can hide behind walls but you run out of ammo...

The coolest looking level is in E3, called Mt Erebus. I think that's L5. Does the mere sight of it inflict the words "The shores of hell" into your brains like mine? That'd be my definition of the word although the level is part of Inferno.

So, Doom 2 > E2 > E3 > E1.

Cool, is Ultimate Doom freeware, shareware or undownloadable? Let me get this straight, the entire "Ultimate doom" is the add on episode sequel?

If you already have Doom Registered I wouldn't reccomend it though.

Oh dear. No. If you already have Registered Doom, then you can download a free upgrade to Ultimate Doom: patch txt. It adds an episode and changes the exe.

If you are missing any of the Doom games, then the cheapest way to get them is to buy a copy of Doom Collector's Edition. Your local software store might have a copy, or you might be able to buy it online.

For information about what the community has created in the years since Doom's release, one good place to look is Doomworld's 10years feature.
