THE Official Sock Thread

Recommended Posts

The official thread for the sock debate;

What are your opinions on socks and how they should be worn?

Do we really need matching socks?

What is your least favourite length of sock?

Do you hide anything interesting in your socks?... more socks perhaps?

Don't be shy, your opinions on socks will always be valued!

I'm quite fond of the socks that I have with grey bottoms. they're very comfortable and durable. I generally don't have a major fit if my socks don't match (I prefer long pants) but it does irk me if my socks have holes in them

I must agree with you, Submerge. Not only do I like the gray-heeled socks myself, but I also decide to turn them inside out. The seams on the inside tend to hurt my toes, so wearing my socks inside-out prevents this.

My feet don't match, so why should my socks?

I sometimes wear socks of a stupidly bright colour.

I only wear socks when I need to.

Favourite type of socks: ski socks.

I like my socks with the grey bottoms. Otherwise normal white socks are just dandy with me.
Oh, and socks should only be worn on the feet, not on your hoo-ha or your ears or hands.

heh, off topic, but those red coloured striped socks turn everything pink in the wash if you aren't careful.

I wear socks sometimes.

You know, if a particular situation calls for socks.

Which is very rare cuz I never get off my ass and go outside.

Gray heeled. Those are my first choice. Then, since I have to wear suit a lot, dark socks depending on the colour of the suit and shoes.

For paintball tournaments, my good old lucky socks, with seahorses on the sides.

I like Smartwool hiking socks. They are expensive but worth it for four reasons:

A. Cool in summer but warm in winter.

B. Very comfortable.

B. Since they are wool they don't feel cold when wet (big plus when you're hunting).

C. Even though they are expensive they don't wear out. Since I've started wearing them I haven't had to replace them. God knows how many pairs of my old socks I would have gone through.

Socks should be worn on your hands, with little googley eyes glued on..

WildWeasel recalls the cheesy Star Trek Voyager rip-off that he "acted" in several years ago. His hand played the part of Toe-Sock, a plaid sock with google eyes and drawn-on Vulcan eyebrows. He remained conspicuously hidden behind a quilt while his hand did the work.

Most of the time, black socks in a thickish sports sock, but not terry toweling, material. Fairly short length.

At work, thin black, navy or grey socks (depending on what else I'm wearing) - thin because I spend a lot of my time standing indoors so thin socks help keep the feet cool. Again, fairly short.

White sports socks only when doing sports and taking part in porn movies. Never at any other time.

When wearing shortish boots, Doc Martins, army boots etc usually mottled grey longer socks, probably rolled down to the boot tops.

Long boots, socks - whatever is comfortable because they will never be seen.

I do a lot of hillwalking. Socks are very important there. A good protection factor 3 sock with padded protection and cooling fibre is essential on a long walk over rough ground. Protection factor 2 is fine and a little cooler for shorter walks. Normal socks are the way to blisters, friction burns, damaged skin and general discomfort. Socks are one of the most important pieces of kit to a hillwalker, and often overlooked by the inexperienced.

Sports sandals - no socks ever!

The real question is, why has such an off the wall odd topic generated so many earnest responses?

I like socks longer than ankle socks but nowhere near knee height and let them bunch down a bit so they're not too high. But quitters are horribly annoying. I like black or gray socks and when I feel like being a smartass I wear these bright green socks (actually Philadelphia Eagles isotoners but you can't tell when in shoes) with torn up black sneakers full of holes.

I think women in striped socks (call them goth or whatever) are sexy.

The most annoying thing about socks is how quickly mine seem to wear out. I think I need a kevlar pair.

The best thing about them is they look funny and you can point and laugh at them without hurting their feelings or incidental guilt.
