Sephiroth Posted October 21, 2001 win2000 sucks!(well for games at least) first i dont think it uyses a "true" DOS. you are most likly running orininal doom so u have no chocie but to get a port. I sudgest zdoom or legacy 0 Share this post Link to post
Cassandra Posted October 21, 2001 It's weird... I'm using windows 2000 too and Doom 2 works with sound and all the stuffs. But I'm not playing the "initial" Doom 2. I use Zdoom to run wads with it, I think that's better. (more parameters and options like jumping, look up and down, graphics options...) You can find it on http://zdoom.notgod.com (Zdoom 1.22 or 1.23 beta 28) 0 Share this post Link to post
Sephiroth Posted October 21, 2001 and for the last time people! you CAN'T run original doom in any of the fallowing, windows 2000, windowsME and WindowsXP! why? because they DO NOT have DOS, it is a emulated cheap imatation of DOS so it aint gonna work! if u have these O/S's then u must use a port. Also if u have win98 dont upgrade unless uhave to, many games have problems with those windows versions. as for XP i am not sure yet if it will be worth getting or if it will be like another windows ME 0 Share this post Link to post
DooMBoy Posted October 21, 2001 You can find it on http://zdoom.notgod.com (Zdoom 1.22 or 1.23 beta 28) Actually, I think Doomworld now hosts ZDoom. I think it's now zdoom.doomworld.com. 0 Share this post Link to post
nc_ds Posted October 21, 2001 The original DooM engine will launch and work just fine under Windows NT and 2000, at least if you run it without sounds and using the command line parameter -devparm. Also, this would seem to sound quite promising (have a look at http://www.softsystem.co.uk/page3.htm): "SoundFX 2000 is THE sound card emulator for DOS programs running on Windows 2000 or NT. SoundFX provides a complete emulation of a SoundBlaster 16 card and hence enables old favourites such as Doom (1 & 2), Heretic, Duke Nukem (2 & 3D) etc to be run with sound under Windows 2000 & NT." Crendowing Posted October 21, 2001 I asked a question like this earlier, only it was whether or not to upgrade to WinME. Anyway, I'm taking y'all's adivice and sticking with Win98. If I want a better computer, I'll just get a job and upgrade galore on hardware. Hell, it makes more sense than to buy a new computer after having the previous one for only about a year. 0 Share this post Link to post
KING ELVIS Posted October 21, 2001 If you wnat get Doom to work under Win2K, you have to recompile the kernel. 0 Share this post Link to post
deep Posted October 21, 2001 and for the last time people! you CAN'T run original doom in any of the fallowing, windows 2000, windowsME and WindowsXP!DOOM works in XP. Only issue is that you need at least a PIII 1000 because of interrupt emulation. Works by intercepting exceptions. Sounds works, with same caveat. Better to use one of the new Windows ports though:) 0 Share this post Link to post
Sephiroth Posted October 21, 2001 well i know it is possible to run it in those operating systems but you better have the ability to do some configureing. It is best to use a port under those 0 Share this post Link to post
Zaldron Posted October 21, 2001 It DOES work. With a little tweaking in the Compatibility Manager you can get any DOS game working on W2k or WXP. 0 Share this post Link to post
Lüt Posted October 22, 2001 What you'll want to do is uninstall Win2K and load Win95B. Problems solved (and performance boosted). Can't go wrong. 0 Share this post Link to post

Lüt Posted October 22, 2001 Lüt...we've heard enough of you're Win95 bullshit.Obviously not, problems like this are still almost weekly. 0 Share this post Link to post
mr8 Posted October 22, 2001 That's the eternal problem of Windows compatibility between versions...It's a shame... Works good on 98 and 98SE Some problems with 98ME Same about Win2k I don't know with XP (great new look I think) Why some progs run good on one Windows and not on another ? It's the same Microsoft corp... They're unable to assure compatibility or it's a marketing technic to force users owning 2 OS and uncrease a lot more bills ? One for the games Another for severs, work and blablabla... I don't know but that's a quite strange isn't it ? 0 Share this post Link to post
Katarhyne Posted October 24, 2001 Lut, if you honestly believe Win95B is better than any of the following: Windows 98SE Windows 2000 Windows XP Professional Then you have serious problems, and to quote Liam... YOU SIR, ARE AN OAF. As for incompatibility, Windows XP is awesome. It runs a lot of stuff that Windows 2000 wouldn't, and I've only found one thing, really, that it won't run at all. (NeoRageX) Even the notoriously buggy Half-Life runs, albeit not without the 1.1.0.6 patch. 0 Share this post Link to post
Lüt Posted October 24, 2001 if you honestly believe Win95B is better than any of the following: Windows 98SEWAY better. Win98SE has the problems, not me. 95's faster than 2K, which is why I like it. I haven't tried any versions of XP yet, and from what I hear they're all resource hogs so I doubt I will. I don't have any way of extensively testing them anyhow. 0 Share this post Link to post
danarchist Posted October 24, 2001 I hate windows...its just a stupid excuse for Bill Gates to make $200 off of you so he can look at what porn you've downloaded and such. And each version seems to have more bugs than the last. I would use something else, but sadly, I know nothing else. Except Quickmenus. What ever happened to that? I liked Quickmenus. 0 Share this post Link to post
RusseII Posted October 24, 2001 Windows 95b is probably the stablest and fastest (imo) of all the windows os'es I've used. Even though you may lose a few things, like some programs only working from win98+ its an ok os. But I currently use win98 on my new comp, because it has a decent amount of support for programs and stuff. 0 Share this post Link to post
Gokuma Posted October 24, 2001 Right on, Lüt and Russell. I use Win95b on an old P120. Unfortunately on my Athlon 700mhz I have to use Win98SE so that the 20GB HD doesn't have to be split into ten partitions. Win95c is too much like Win98 but it does allow you to have large partitions. 0 Share this post Link to post
