Plasma Gun

Who here hate the classic Doom plasma gun? Its look, its sound, its blue bolts (wheres the red???) I hate it hate it hate it. Doom 64, that was better due to the awesome sounds effects, but otherwise still crappy. Who is with me?

Its look was goofy. Then again, it was based off a modified toy the id crew got at a Toys 'R' Us, if memory serves me right.

Other than that, I don't have any quarrel with the thing.

Heh, when I first played the pc version I thought the sound for it was really annoying (having been introduced to it on snes where it used the generic "woosh" monster projectile noise)

I do still find it slightly annoying, but otherwise...!

It feels more like some kind of techno-hose than anything. The sound is kinda cool, but I can see how it'd be annoying to some people.

Plasma rocks, it gives good confusion on deathmatch and for singleplayer it holds up the paintime of the hellspawn.
With a plasma the mastermind from e3m8 is just a funny joke ^.^

I hate the "Doo-wipe!" sfx, but otherwise I like it!

The noise get's slightly irritating after long streches but it's fine otherwise.

I really like the look of the original Doom plasma rifle! It looks like a secret experimental weapon, like a prototype, not like all those generic clean shiny laser guns.

I don't have anything against the plasma rifle except it's sounds. The PSX counterpart is better.

As for looks I do prefer the doom64 one, except for it's buzzing sound.

I've liked every iteration of the Plasma Rifle thus far, except, as previously noted, the constant buzzing sound of the Doom 64 one.

I kinda wish the plasma blobs were a little smaller/narrower in the PC version. Also don't like the buzzing in the '64 version. Otherwise love 'em.

Agreed, i like what they did with it in Doom 3 though it's like 20x better.

The original plasma gun was my favourite for a long time. I think I now prefer the single shotty. The plasma gun is great - the normal position frame looks a bit odd and square, but when you see it lifted in the recoil frame, it looks cool. The sound is fantastic.

I disagree. I thought the D3 one didn't look anything special and was too much of a "generic future weapon". Its sound was wimpy in the extreme and it wasn't as satisfying to use. I don't know hows its damage compared to the D1/2 one, but it felt weaker. I changed my copy of D3 to use the original plasma sound. That made it quite a bit better. :P

The only thing I liked about the D3 weapon was that cool little noise it makes when you ready it.

Imo all doom3 weapons sounds are wimpy to me, I downloaded an weapon mod for it to replace all original sounds.
Can't remember the name of the mod, but it sounds much better now.

I've always thought that the sound was too loud and generally just annoying. Otherwise, I enjoy using it.

I thought the sound was just right, until I played with more sound channels, and it sounded much louder, but I've gotten used to it since.

I agree that the sound can get annoying when firing it a lot on some heavy populated map, but otherwise nothing wrong with the plasma for me.Together with the chaingun it´s great to stun the monsters which can be crucial in close combat.

By red I meant I was looking at it from a realistic view. Wait a minute, why am I comparing Doom to real life? Any-hoo, in closing Metroid Prime had a badass plasma cannon and I think Doom needs red plasma bolts. In fact I gave my Doom red plasma and better sound FX, now the plasma gun is fun. Thanks go to those who read all of my rant and put up with it for some reason...

Nah I just loaded it into my current pwad project that is laughably 1/8 complete...

Red Faction Rail Driver sound FX and red plasma bolts > Classic Doom Plasma

I also feel the D3 plasma gun was too generic, though I gotta give it to the classic Doom plasma gun for being "unique."

Personally, I was dissapointed with all the Doom III weapons except the BFG, which was the only weapon to retain the general shape of the original...

Metroid Prime had badass weapons all around.
- Normal: Not too powerful, but it'll fire as fast as you can mash the button.

- Wave: Fairly powerful, slower firing, wider area.

- Ice: Powerful and slow, but it freezes stuff too!

- Plasma: Puts on a good firey hurtin', but only at short range.

IMO, the sound of the plasma bolts firing is the most satisfying and the most sweetest sound found in the whole game series.
How can it possibly be annoying?
If it wasn't for that particular sound, I wouldn't be playing DOOM1 and DOOM2 as often as I do.
