Duke 3D for Doom??

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever attempted a Duke 3D conversion for Doom? I remember a really old Doom 2 WAD called "Xaos", where one level mimicked Hollywood Holocaust, but I've never seen a full conversion.

Just wondering, 'cause people have done Doom-to-Duke conversions before...

In my opinion, Duke 3D had too many unique things that can't be replicated properly in Doom to make it worth porting over. It would lose much of its charm if a conversion was attempted (especially in the case of the Shrinker and Expander guns).

With a lot of Decorate trickery, it would be possible to fake the Shrinker at the very least (but not Duke's stomping - you'd have to shoot the shrunk monster) but not the Expander. And of course, it'd have to be ZDoom-specific, because I can't think of another port that offers the required kind of functionality (some of it could be mimicked in EDGE, but not all of it) - for stuff like fake bridges, exploding walls, etc.

porting a newer engine to an older engine = no. especially when the newer engine has far greater interactive functionality.

i've gotten into fights with people about this. if you want to play duke, go fucking play duke. don't try to port it to doom.

Sorry, in my opinion, it sucked. I'm no idiot, plenty of people loved the game, but I guess I'm just a bias id fanboy...Or I'm just to spoiled by their superiority that it makes it hard for me to enjoy other titles. Ah I don't fuckin know..

i heard you can sort of play duke nukem maps in zdoom, but there are some problems? confirmation on this anyone? also I dont see why you dont just play Duke, I'd rather ports focus on Doom, Hexen, Heretic, Strife and all other games based on the Doom engine before they start making better versions of completly different engines, although that would be pretty awesome having an engine that could play all sprite based FPSes before 1996

id is not the be-all end-all of gaming. they make good games. they just don't make GREAT games. and sometimes, they make terrible games. in doom's case, it's the community that makes doom great. you know, when they're not trying to port duke3d to it. or fighting over amazingly asinine shit.

Ok, but you must agree that id has superior technology. It's like their extraterrestrial or something. I swear John Carmack is an alien hyprid, haling from the depths of area 51.

Duke had it's moments for me for a little while, and was unique in its own way with porn shops/exotic dancers/bars ect.. but could never take dooms place with me (or any other id title for that matter) duke should have had another release out by now besides that "manhatten project"

false. source engine was developed internally by valve themselves. that's why it took 7 goddamn years.

But it still has code from Q1 in it.
JC stated that himself when talking about the release of the Q3 sourcecode.
Anyone got that half year old one bookmarked?

yeah, little bits and pieces, a mere shadow of their former selves. if anything, it's probably netcode.

blah blah blah. i admitted there was q1 code in source. what i refuse to admit is that it's of any consequence. do you realize, exactly, how OLD that code is? it's so simplistic, and so widespread, that i'm suprised bits of it aren't in more engines by ACCIDENT.

You can't have parts of it by "accident" because then it wouldn't be the quake code, it would be a self-made code, The point is, if id hadn't gone out and made those codes, a good 60% of FPS games could be considered out of the picture.

way to miss sarcasm- and my point. the point i'm trying to make is, the amount of original quake code that remains in today's FPS games is so minuscule that it's basically negligible- they could just as easily be written by some inhouse coder.

maybe it was something when HL1/goldsrc was big and running on the Q1 engine, but a game having bits of quake 1 code nowadays is like a white person having a distant relative of another ethnicity who lived 200 years ago.

The one big problem was the lack of True 3D and RoR (room-over-room). Duke had "almost-true" RoR; specifically, you could have one room over another as long as you couldn't see into one from the other or see into both from a third.

However, in ZDoom, that no problem longer exists - user Graf Zahl has made a port of ZDoom, GZDoom that has TRUE 3D, not just true RoR. It can use GWA files if provided, else it builds them internally on the fly. If you want the programmer's power - and dehacked capability - of ZDoom and the 3D goodies of EDGE, this is it. It is currently based of ZDoom 96 with extensions and the author intends to update it to the next "official" ZDoom, once that is released.

If anybody ever does a half-decent DN TC for Doom, it will likely be with this.

Downloaded it and wont get a picture, even after playing around with the .ini :-/

My setup:
WinXP Pro SP1
GeForce 3 TX (The OEM-Version from Medion)
DirectX 9.1
Monitor is an Acer AL1713 LCD

Any suggestions?

Yeah, stop stealing my avatar :) :) :)

There were a lot of problems at the beginning, mostly due to crap graphics drivers. GZDoom really pushes the envelope of OpenGL functionality, but most graphics cards can do what it requires, even my 3yo Radeon 7500. The problem has almost always been drivers that don't expose the full functionality of the card.

I would have suggested visiting the GZDoom BUGS forum and reporting it there, but I see you already have :)
