"A Modest Video Game Proposal"

he said he considered all mods to be breaches of copyright

Haha what a crackhead? 'HE' considers it? Since when is he the country's head of legislature? HAHAHA!!! The law tells you what are and aren't breaches of copyright, not some crazy lawyer on a mission of ignorance.

So to me the Goverment is a bunch of Dick heads waving in all directions, not knowing where to look or where to stop, not paying attention the real Issue. The Parents. Blame them.

Exactly. Jack thompson said nothing about violent movies! It's just that people tend to pay attention to movie ratings a hell of a lot more than they do with video game ratings.

Remember that lawsuit where two girls got fat on McDonald's and McDonald's almost lost? Ridiculous right, because it's the kids' fault they ate the food. Same thing here. Jack Thompson started lawsuits against several game companies when kids committed crimes and murders inspired by the games. IT'S NOT THE GAME'S FAULT.

To be fair, crappy parents are the real problem. However you can't blame it on the parents and let it rest at that, because that won't solve anything. If one kid shoots another kid because they played some game they shouldn't have, it isn't the dead kid's parents fault in any sense, and often they have nobody to blame.

Still it is the case with crazy people that they will latch on to any violent stimulus. It's not like there isn't really extreme examples of violence in literature or in movies.

I guess the problem is that games are (a) interactive, and (b) a new medium, so that's where the controversy comes from. Personally, there is another very interactive medium that a lot of these legislitive people discount: Human imagination. There is not a violent (or sexual) thought that a (sick enough) human couldn't reach on their own without any prompting from outside ideas, so all in all the violence-in-games thing is a little bit moot.

Although I think Jack Thompson is totally fucking insane and a lot of his points are extreme and put across in a logically incorrect or controversial way, I do think he has some good points about restricting the sale of inappropriate material to minors, and on profiteering on violence.

Goodbye forever.

You're probably right. To make someone snap and murder other humans is much too complex a matter to say "They played a violent game zomg :("

Usually kids watch movies, read comic books, pretend they are super heroes, play video games, day dream, ect. But there are also people who are born real mother fuckers. You know the ones where they think they have control over your life and when you finally go to school, your life is destroyed by those who like to fuck with kids who are not familiar with bullies.

So that keeps on going on and on to the point where ones sanity snaps and that's it. The kid can watch one movie, play one game, read one comic, see something in the street, read novels involving war, explore the internet, anything. It can set a kid off and commit the SOB's to die.

So video games aren't much to blame. It's basically the peer pressure, parents, abusive parents, ect. The government doesn't look at hard facts. They target one thing and take the kill while ignoring everything else. Basically the Government is near sighted idiots with a map in their hands while it's upside down.

Well, feck it. It looks like someone has already released a half assed version of the game, and APPARENTLY a modern engine one is being worked on, so it looks like between the two no one would really give a shit about a Doom engine version. Sorry to waste the time of those interested, but there's not all that much a point. Thanks to those who supported this though, too bad it's pointless at this point.

Oh well, at least they're making it! Which in a way does the job for you, and this way there'll be no complications with the game being #1- for +10 year old game and #2 - a mod.

Any links to info about who's making it etc.?

I just love that he ripped off "A modest proposal" in his title for it. Great little piece of literature that.

Gee, that's not very nice. It's not his fault if he's blind. (Joke).

Another thing to consider is that video game developers "rate" their own games whereas movies are rated by a third party.

What about the ESRB? :/

...except that's not really true at all. Games are rated by the ESRB, which acts like the MPAA in doling out ratings.

Jack Thompson is a real-life troll. Just paying attention to him gives him a huge stiffy. He needs to feel important.

It's unfortunate everyone bends over to pay attention to his clown-like antics.

Huh? I read in PC magazine an article that indicated this. It says that games are rated voluntarily by the industry, but I don't know what that means, they mention the ESRB of course too, so I was confused.

A couple of years ago when Duke Nukem 64 was launched on the N64, I was chilling out in my local video store which rented Movies, games, the usual porno, ect. A parent walked in the store (A Guy) and his child browsed the N64 section. His kid was only 8 years old and he rented him Duke Nukem 64. 2 days later he returned the game saying he was outraged by the violence in the game and nudity.

So this is what I did. I took the box, shoved it in his face, showed him the "m" rating and contents on the back of the box. I made him feel like the dumbest parent in America cause HE IS FUCKIN BLIND.

Boy, if I was him I would've told you to get the fuck out of my face you little prick.

That goes for anyone here. Don't shove shit in my face.
