What inspired Id software with Wolfenstein 3d?

Recommended Posts

Probably someone already know this former game, but I discover this today, and it impressed me knowing this game was the Id Software inspiration to create Wolfenstein 3D.

In 1983 Muse Software created "Castle Wolfenstein", it was originally released on the Apple II in 1981, and now you can play the dos version. (If you use XP, you need DosBox)

The game some dificult at the beginning, but is too addictive.

of course

why do you think they added 3D to the name? Because it's not friggin' 2D anymore.

Same thing done with Duke3D

It's 2.5D, bitch. And that's a technical term.

OT: My favorite part of this game was hearing the Nazi death scream. "AIEE!!!"

Nintendo made that term up.

If you were an Atari fan like me you'd know this game pretty well. I know there's a C64 version too. It was a quite popular cross-platform hit back in the day.

I've known this since 1999.
I first read about it on a site which was called BJ Blazcowicz' Hideout. I believe that this site was shut down and went offline quite a while ago, but I'm not entirely sure.
Try googleing for it if you want to.

Here's the author's personal page.

There's gotta be a tribute webpage to Silas somewhere, the dude kinda passed away :(

Wow, he was almost 7 feet tall. He's a truly massive star in the industry.

Thanks for the info!

Im not a atari fan, but I play sometimes with my amstrad, and other dos games. The best games for me are the classics like Prehistorik, OutRun, Sonic or Shinobi...

Heh when wolf3d was first released it might have been like this:

Youve played wolf2d (or whatever it was called) but now experience the fury of *WOLFENSTEIN 3D*!! it comes with: width, heigth and for a limited time only, DEPTH with 3D GLASSES... maybe.

I dont know much.

No, I meant "AIEE!!". In the original 2D game, the Nazis would scream like little girls when shot. Try it yourself sometime.

Yeah, it's the standard death cry for many a Indiana Jones movie middle-eastern goon. Actually, now that I think of it, I heard it more in Johnny Quest.
