Maybe sub 10 minutes is possible?

Recommended Posts

I've been working on a built run of doom 2 again and I'm thinking that maybe a sub 10 minute run MIGHT just be possible. I have calculated that to beat andreys time of 14:37 I would have to take off 8.656 seconds per level over the 32 levels. Now obviously this isn't feasable as some levels you just CAN'T cut back the time on such as level 1, 30, 32 and 5 that come immediately to mind. Which means your looking at an average of taking off 10 seconds per level, which is getting fairly substantial.

Now I've had a post up here before about the feasability of a sub 10 minute run so what's changed this time? I've managed to take off 2 seconds from andrey's level 2 time which I thought would be almost impossible for such a short and seemingly simple map. I think that if I can take this much off a map like this then maybe there's hope for the rest of the levels, especially some of the longer ones. Although as levels get straighter and more open it gets harder and harder to take time off but still I won't know until I get to them.

So with all that lovely reasoning, and my level 2 proof does anybody think that sub 10 minutes may just be possible or am I still totally dreaming?

How much does the Pacifist Ending of 07 shave off?

Probably nothing (the current fastest run uses the rocket jump, and exits in 0:05). 0:04 is probably impossible, but over the years I've become more and more hesitant to call something "impossible".

And to address the original question: under 10 minutes for the 30uv seems very, very far-fetched. Show me a feasible way (in terms of explaining routes, tricks, and times) to get even below 13:00, and we'll talk some more... ;-)

I think he's talking about the secret teleport on map17 that leads straight to the exit which nobody knows about, not even me. ;)

That was an ambitious claim, though. Always remaining open to the impossible will continue to open doors, despite how many things have been discovered (the map07 stuff... didn't see that coming). Still, I'd have to agree that sub 10 is impossible unless you find that teleporter.

Any chance you'll continue on this? Sub-10 minutes seems to be out, of course, but you could still set a new record - and I loved how you handled Map02, so I'd like to see more of that. :)

I have continued it and am aiming for a new record. Unfortunately I've only gotten up to the start of map 4 before school came back to haunt me. Fortunately today is my last day so expect to see some progress soon. Just incase your wondering I've managed to take a second off map 3 bringing it down from 18 seconds to 17.

normally, I'd say that that sounds pretty slight... but in context of this endeavor, that is quite an accomplishment.

actually according to Cameron 4 seconds on map01 should be possible. I think he has some 5.02 using the real engine (he did a 4 second demo with MBF)

You have to beat Map02 pacifist style to open the secret teleport on 17 (which leads to the Map26 yellow key btw), but it works only with doom2.exe. No ports, no cheats, no TAS!

Yeah, MBF allows you to wallslide in a direction not possible in the original game. In this case, it's the wall closest to the health vials.

It gets better. I have FINALLY (after weeks of frustration) managed to exit map 4 in 18 seconds, thats 2 seconds faster than andreys time :)
