Doom Turns 12

If you absolutely CANNOT play High Tech Hell in Legacy, then and only AFTER exhausting all attempts with Legacy, attempt to run the map with GZDoom. I played it with both and it was meant for Legacy, but GZDoom will run it with a few errors here and there... but if it's the only way then try that.

What errors?

Some scripts didn't activate correctly on a few levels, like the elevator, which didn't want to move when the switch was pressed... and I didn't check the deep water flooded area... and I kept getting terrible background noise with GZDoom.

The Cacowards were good this year, good choice with AgentSpork as mapper of the year, he really did do a lot of upstanding work :) Great Job Scuba!

Are you using the latest version? I've played through it without a hitch.

The earlier versions dont play the wad that well tho.

I love it, 12 years already, I cannot wait until the 20TH!

And Merry Christmas to everyone. And a happy new year. And look out for my base.zip and hellgate2.zip in /newstuff. Well worth the download.

It seem so long since i played the original shareware Doom game in the dark on a trusty 486sx and that was quite a gaming experience I must say. The greatest game ever made.

IMOP only half life can match Doom for the level design.

You made hellgate2? I only ask as i'm reviewing it for another site, and didn't know a fellow doomworlder made it. :D Kudos!

P.S. HL is pretty good, but the effects and some parts of HL2 are sweet as all get out.

Half Life's level design was never that great. System Shock2, the quake games Doom3 Blood. All had much better level design IMO. But, that's all IMO we're talking about here. ;)

System Shock 2 was great because it was based off of a great engine....i.e. the same enging used for Thief 2(and possibly thief 1.) While the engine itself is hard as crap to get working for a newbie to design, it does/did offer some interesting design points for developers at that time.

P.S. Ever play the rare and ill fated Blood 2? Another great game, destined for the junk bin because of poor marketing and sales. *Sigh*

On topic - Wow, seems like almost yesterday when my older brother brought the shareware version home. Somehow, I still remember looking at the cardboard 3.5 disk pouch it came in for the first time.

Off topic - Blood and Shadow Warrior easily take my favorite FPS level design (I think), and I personally liked Unreal's. I can't see why you say it was inspired by Quake 1, I'd put the atmospheric experience from both games completely seperate. U felt open, colorful, and natural - Q1 felt cramped, bland, and staged (expansion packs aside).
I played the demo for Blood 2 a while back, but couldn't find the full game anywhere at the time. Come to think of it, any online retailers sell it these days? The demo was damn good fun.

Happy 12th, Doom! Keep bringing the pain!

Blood had (all-round) indeed the best out-of-the-box leveldesign I have ever seen in any game so far. Blood 2 only has a few interesting levels in comparison, and is mediocre / badly balanced.

Not really, although it made a good attempt. I did like the riverboat and Boggy Creek level.

except for doom 3 I totally agree, Half life level design was very overrated at the time and still is
