why the 8.3 file restriction still?

Recommended Posts

wads could be much more descriptive if only allowed more than 8 characters... nobody runs doom on anything under win95 anymore, so why not lift the restriction?

There's a TSR for FreeDOS called DOSLFN that gives it long filename support.

Despite that, eight characters seems to be a good lowest-common denominator for the sorts of systems Doom runs on. Okay, so DOS is the only one I can think of that's that limited; even Minix has 14 characters (the minimum allowed by the POSIX standard), but if Doom ever gets ported to the TRS-80 then you're good to go...

And zip works as a distribution method for the same reason: Unzip is, after all, the third most portable program in the world.
