Ever get critized for playing old school Doom?

Recommended Posts

Yes my friends made fun of me when I was playing classic doom instead of the more modern shooters.
But I don't care as long as I enjoy playing it, it does piss me off somewhat though.
It feels like when they are saying that bullshit its like getting stabbed right through the hart.

That's odd, one of the top ten favorite maps for Sven Coop on Steam is "Classic" which is composed of the best doom 1 levels and music.

A couple years ago, I was reading a Doom 3 preview in my school's library. Someone saw a screenshot on the monitor and ask, "What's that?" I told him it was Doom 3 and how it was going to be kickass. He replied with, "Doom sucks, Counter-Stike rules!" And he kind of went on like that. Every once in a while we'd pass in the halls, and he'd shout something about Counter-Stike to me. That's about the closest I've been to being critized as a Doom fan.

Recently, maybe a month ago. I was in my friend's basement, doing a speedrun of Knee-Deep in the Dead, when that one guy from school just randomly came for a visit all stoned. He saw me playing and was all like, "Doom is the coolest game ever, blah, blah, blah..." I scoffed at his fickleness.

No, though a friend asked me why I was playing and modding such a simplistic and crudely violent game instead of something more "creative" that he thought would fit me better.

Doom 64 looks decent actually I am suprised I never played it. I got rid of my N64 and I played Duke Nukem 64 but not DOOM. Oh well wouldnt a sprite conversion be nice from Doom 64 to the PC? They do it for Half-Life like the PS2 versions and Dreamcast models.

I just saw those screen shots it looks pretty neat.

On the very same website is the Doom 64 TC

Haha, playing Doom stoned rules. I've recently started doing that. I find that sometimes I'm a more alert player when stoned, and seem to get much more paranoid. However, it's easier for me to get lost.

Yeah I discovered that afrer looking further and played it today finally. hehe

I love old games like Doom and I even play Flashpoint which has low quality graphics. Its a 2000 game its like six years old now. People dont like it because it dosent have those stupid new shiny grapics its all about gameplay to me. Regardless of the standard game you can get mods out there that add quality and improve the game and game play.

flashpoint1985.com for those who have no idea what operation Flashpoint is...

I find it weird how so many people are divided on this. I play doom cuz its fun, but I also play Halo because its also fun. I'll play a rousing game of Battle Front 2 and then switch to a zany game of Dig Dug. Games that were fun years ago are still fun now, just as games now can be just as fun as the ones made years ago.

I actually go online looking up information on old obscure systems/ games that I've never played and try to give them a go to so its not about nostalgia.

In my personal opinion some of the best games out now are the free ones you can play on Java. Those games are made by people who like to play games.

Further more my genre taste is never ending the only genre of games I don't play is adult.

So really it always has been and always will be about gameplay. In the long run anyway.

To me, the "it's all about the gameplay" statement doesn't ring true with me. If the original Doom had poor quality graphics rendered by a bunch of amatuers, I think it would not have had nearly the impact it had. A game has to at least have decent graphics in order to create an atmosphere and mood that draws you in. Gameplay is ultimately the most important aspect, but proper (not necessarily top-notch) graphics are extremely important too, unless it's an extremely minimalistic game like Pac-Man or Tetris. The funny thing about Halo and Half-Life worshippers is that they probably praised Doom when it first came out, then quickly turned their backs on it as soon as a better looking game arrived.

I definitely get ciritcized for playing doom. My cousin always comes over and says "holy sh1t, you use your NEW computer to play doom? WTH?". But he doesn't edit doom, so he doesn't understand the awesomness od making your own wad/mod. :)

More importantly, he doesn't seem to understand DOOM is a kickass game to play.

On the graphics front, Doom still has the best graphic *design* I have yet to see matched in any fps. People will tend to confuse graphic style and design for overall quality, which is where a lot of the strife comes from, I believe. Doom simply has the perfect gumbo pot of Hellish imagery, tech, and Bruce Campbell.

Gameplay wise, it's all about the speed and the bodycount. As the visuals become more important in todays games, they tend to get slower (halo) and display less enemies (doom3) to keep things running smoothly. The average enemy, being more independent now, has been beefed up to give the player the needed challenge, as opposed to Dooms logic of "Not what monsters really, but how many?". Cannon fodder is the phrase I'm looking for.

Give us fast pace and a shitload of bodies to plow through, along with interestingly-designed levels and creative character design, and it will be a winner in my book. Painkiller came damn close, though the player speed was still a bit lacking.

People hate me for playing the good ol' Doom all the time. Every time someone asks me what FPS games I play and I tell them "Doom," they give me the most dumbfounded WTF look.

Today, the only real flaw I see is that the chaingun sucked ever since they put in the SSG, but that's pretty minor compared to the flaws in today's games.

Painkiller did come very close. The only beef I had was they would stop you to kill all the enemies before you could advance. That just wasn't fun.

My brother has, "You just bought a new computer and you're still playing Doom?"

I had a friend of a friend tell me how great Halo and HL2 is. He said Doom sucks. "Your mother with my dick in her mouth sucks alot more.", was my snappy response.

I have Painkiller and though I haven't played it in months, it does give off a slight Doom vibe, which is a good thing. Hell, it was actually simpler than Doom in some aspects--you didn't even have keycards. It was just about kickass levels, and plowing through lots of well designed enemies with awesome weapons. But yeah, the whole arcade-like "you can't advance until you kill this wave of baddies" element is pretty much the only thing that kept it from being a total winner. Anyway, about Doom's graphics versus those of modern FPS's, people don't take into context the time it came out, and what is possible with the technology it uses. When Doom arrived on the Game Boy Advance, for instance, it would have been ridiculous if well respected critics talked about how crude the graphics are, considering they were certainly pushing what the GBA was visually capable of, at least to some extent. When Doom came out in 1993, it was essentially the best looking shooter there was at the time. Even the following year, with the release of Doom 2, its clean look was largely unparreled, with Rise of the Triad being the only contender (although its engine was in many ways, significantly less advanced that Doom's).
