Modders cause Oblivion to become M-Rated.

The ESRB has concluded that the game deserves a rating of Mature because: 1) partial nudity in the PC version of the game can be created by modders; and 2) the game contains excessive blood and gore that go beyond a Teen rating. The facts are as follows:

There is no nudity in Oblivion without a third party modification. In the PC version of the game only - this doesn't apply to the Xbox 360 version - some modders have used a third party tool to hack into and modify an art archive file to make it possible to create a mesh for a partially nude (topless) female that they add into the game. Bethesda didn't create a game with nudity and does not intend that nudity appear in Oblivion. There is no nude female character in a section of the game that can be "unlocked." Bethesda can not control tampering with Oblivion by third parties. Bethesda is taking steps to ensure that modders can not continue to hack into Oblivion's art archives to create partially nude figures.

I can't believe this. It's a freaking mod for christ sake. I don't know what the hell the ESRB is thinking anymore. There's mods for Morrowind that adds full nudity and that game isn't rated AO. This is ridiculous, it's not like the hidden sex game in San Andreas.

Heh, more gamer "omg censure" because 5 year olds aren't allowed to go buy teen or adult-oriented games by themselves.

If you wish, you could report Morrowind to the ESRB, if you feel it's unfair they didn't rank it as adult oriented in spite of those mods. Maybe they'll fix that for you. The mods controversy is rather new, though, at least from this angle.

I have to point out that Modders had nothing to do with this, in fact she was making my dinner at the time.

Jesus, not another fucking Hot Coffee fiasco...goddamn stupid fucking ESRB, why can't they realize that THE NUDITY IS ONLY ACCESSED BY A FUCKING MOD THAT YOU HAVE TO DONWLOAD FIRST? Man...just unbelievable.

That's exactly what I was thinking, heh.

Anyway, esrb is dumb.

And before anyone says "but it's also M because of the violence" (Because someone will), Hexen II is T and it's very violent (monsters being ripped apart by chains, anyone?)

It's a good move; it encourages teenage software piracy.

Unlike morrowind, the breast textures shipped with oblivion. Though yes, you need to mod the game, which isnt hard at all considering the provided tools.

Who cares what the ESRB says anyway? I dont recall my torrent for Oblivion coming with a rating sticker on it (though of course the box did), and I didnt know what it was rated until today.

Amaster might be onto something by bringing that up, because if you think about it, you can otherwise "create" partial nudity on a piece of paper with a pencil. The last time I bought a block of paper it didn't have a parental advisory sticker or a rating tag, though (not even a warning about paper cuts, but hey).

From what I've heard, the female base models had no actual nipples, just the shape of the breasts like a doll. What the modders did was slap on the male's bare chest texture onto the female model. Bam, instant nudity.

Seems like a rather stupid reason to rerate a game, though. I mean, you can do that with any game that ships with a female model and a bare chested man.

I actually find this hard to believe. Maybe my mind needs to be rated M because I have the ability to think about pamela anderson.

Next ESRB target: The sims 2!

Don't give the ESRB any ideas now. They'll start rating games Mature for having "modifiable chests."

I'd like to know how many moddable games haven't had someone somewhere make a "tits" mod. I mean, any game any game where characters can be skinned (etc) has had nude versions made by someone. Should they all be M rated?

Anyway - a pair of pixelated tits? Come on, let's get some perspective here. I dunno about the US, but half of the commonly bought daily news papers in the UK have a gratuitous tits picture every day.

Anyway, I don't give a rats ass about M rating. It's a US thing and I'm well over the age anyway. With the "Hot Coffee" thing, most of the whines came from people who really shouldn't be buying the game anyway. This one does seem a bit different though. If the game does not ship with these textures, why should the original game be restricted as a result of what other people do with it?

It's still pixelated? I thought Oblivion was supposed to have the "best gfx ever".

Anyway, Hexen II is T and has tits and gore, was never rerated. lol.

SiN also had an actual nude Elexis Sinclair skin hidden in the pak0.sin file, with an "X" prefix in an X subfolder. I do not know if the steam rerelease has this because i'm not wasting my money on episodic crap.
Plus, she masturbates... although in a swimsuit in the final version. (link obviously nsfw)

I can't remember where I read it, but before the game was released, someone predicted that this would happen. It's probably all just some marketing strategy.

This type of controversy is rather recent so you won't see any such ratings (or perhaps promotional ploys, as chopkinsca suggested) for older games unless they're selling strong now.

Heh, it might be SFW if your work is editing porn/erotic material.

As stated numerous times before, in numerous other threads, U.S. peoples are afraid of tits.

This is the kind of things that make me wonder whos the head of the ESRB. Then again I wont have to worry about "M" rated games come December when I'm 17. Then again my local EB doesnt ask me for Id ever since I grew in a goatee. Weird.

I can't grow facial hair, so ID must be shown, even if I'm 6'3" and kick their ass with my pinkie. :/

You know how the ESRB keeps putting disclaimers on games saying "Game experience may change during online play"? They should update that - "Game experience may change upon downloading user-created content."
