Lighting levels

Recommended Posts

Is it true that you can't see the difference between a lighting level of say 144 and 152. Every time I do this I just can't see any difference, it looks like the same level of lighting. Is my sight failing me or is it really impossible to see any difference?

IIRC the steps are multiples of 16, i.e. 16, 32, 48 etc. ZDoom (other ports, too?) changed it to smaller steps though.

I think you can see a slight difference in GL ports like JDoom.

No, even though you can't exactly tell, there is a difference, it's just that the lighting levels are so close together it's hard to tell.

No one has mentioned yet that Doom uses a colormap and palette. 256 colors, and that's not enough to show very slight changes in light levels. Of course this doesn't apply to OpenGL ports, though.

I was generally under the impression that doom lit levels at 16 unit intervals whereas certain ports such as zdoom, light levels at 8 units, thus greater falloffs and more dramatic lighting effects.
