I'm not gonna see it. I didn't like the sketches he did as Borat on TV, so I doubt I'll like this.

Unfortunately, I find much of Sacha Baron Cohen's humour wears thin very quickly. He creates the joke/situation, then does little more than repeat it over and over until I feel nauseous. Even the character of Borat is just a variation on the Ali G format IMO. I can watch him for one or two 30 minute sketch shows, but after that I've seen pretty much the entire thing and extending it to a series or a movie just bores me. :(

I saw the film and thought it was awful. I'm not offended by it and I understand where the comedy is supposed to be coming from, but as Enjay said, Cohen gets boring really fast. He's really not doing anything different to the first Ali G sketches that he did on the 11 O'Clock show years ago. I also get the impression he has to get hours and hours of footage just to edit it down to get a few good 5 minute clips. Trying to get an hour and a half's worth of good footage seems to be pushing it.

I'm also not sure why it's so well received critically. I've read loads of critics praising the film as if it were some towering achievement of modern satire. Sure, uncovering redneck attitudes to homosexuality and the middle east is funny (though hardly original), but I fail to see how most of Cohen's capers (shitting in a bag at the dinner table, running naked through a hotel) push the envelope of socio-political satire.

I just think it's funny, I mean some things are kind of stupid, but it's just so funny in a stupid way. And then theres the aspect of seeing people say stupid things, also. But Borat himself is funny in his own way, it isn't just "look at those people being stupid", Borat is being pretty stupid too and somehow people don't focus on it. I mean for goodness sakes, the driving scene didn't put the driving instructor in a bad light but it was still funny.

I hear Baron Cohen's making a Bruno movie now. Apparently Universal are paying him $41 million for the priviledge.

And to think barely anyone outside Britain had ever even heard of the Ali G movie... ;)

I thought it was hilarious. The whole movie theater laughed (including me) from the beginning till the end. my review: 10/10

I thought it would be annoying, but one-by-one the people whose review opinion I almost always agree with, who also thought the same as I did and didn't want to see it because they thought it was annoying and never liked any of Cohen's stuff before, have been coming back after being dragged to it and saying it was great. At this point I wouldn't say no if somebody asked me to go. Which seems inevitable, so I suppose I'll find out for myself soon enough.

He gets sued? for what, borat=respect

The Romanian villagers (beginning of the movie) are planning on suing him for some sort of exploitation (only paying them 3 pounds each, not telling them what he was really doing, misrepresenting them, etc). Also, a hotel decided not to press charges after his crew starting stealing hotel furniture while filming the movie. (Got to give props to their boldness.)

I want to see this movie on principle based soley on the fact that it manages to piss so many people off.

I want to see it on principle based on the fact that it's almost entirely unscripted and improv, breaking the tired old customs of comedy writing.

The Departed,

That one's pretty good. I don't know of I'm going to see Borat myself; I even got a popup about it here on Doomworld back before I managed to kill the telefragged popup thrower!

Funny as hell. I can understand where people complain from his over-use of similar material and how it simply gets repetitive, but from an average viewers standpoint, they are watching something going on to real America that was not filmed with people being scripted to do things and I would almost like to say that makes them enjoy it more because it brings them that much closer to the idea of a movie that acts similar to a reality TV show. It's the craze America has fallen in love with.

Jagshemash!. I like it, it was very funny apart from the scene where he kisses a lady and many people though it was his girlfriend at first. But it turned out to be his sister, the number 4 prostitute in all of Kazakhstan. That sister thing was terrible!. The funniest scenes in the movie were,

1. The young boys and girls running towards the Ice Cream van in order for a treat and get the absolute shits scared out of them when they see a screaming bear greet them.

2. Borat gets out of the shower, and realises that Azamat is reading his magazine and wanking on the bed at the same time. Borat gets pissed off and the two start a huge fight, with no closes and all!, oh fuck that made me blow my nose 5 times!

3. Borat at the Rodeo saying may George W. Bush drink the blood of every man, woman, and child in iraq. With my dad been from Iraq my comment is that George W. Bush can go to bloody hell, Borat is da MAN!

4. Borat meeting Pamela Anderson, and he has her outfit, etc.

5. The train scene early in the film was hilarious, this damn hen flies around on the train!

I've wathced every episode of Bruno on both Ali G in the USAii shows, I expect a very funny and dumb Bruno movie. I love his accent and stupid hair style and clothing.

Though, as "Media Scene" (a magazine i apparently subscribed to when i bought some Dalek porn) says: Why does he speak Polish?

I could be mistaken but one of my Jewfriends told me it was a form of Yiddish.

Completely different origins, completely different languages. (Polish = West Slavic, Yiddish = West Germanic.) I've read that it's simply done for comedic effect, because most Americans won't know the difference.

He definitely speaks polish. Even though he seems only to imitate the sound of it, rather than really using or understanding it; it's clear enough for me to hear every single word.
During the evening meal, when he starts to sing, and everybody thinks it's just his way of praying, the song goes:
"I'm sorry, do you speak english" (referring to a woman, as it's a feminine form), and so on.

However, I didn't find the movie to be extremly funny. There are some amusing sketches; like the one in the dog shelter, when Borat tells the lady to put fingers on her head, imitating horns, and say "Shalom". I nearly laughed my ass off.
How naive can you be? Oh, maybe you don't need to be naive, you just have to be american.

But when Borat stared to take a dump in the middle of New York... I'm not a big fan of that kind of "jokes".
