mr8 Posted November 18, 2001 I'm quite sure that Doom is unbeatable. (Some of you might laugh about that maybe) I've played numerous "Doom like" like Quake, Blood, Duke Nukem... And of course, those famous Half-Life, Opposing Force, Blue-Shift, Unreal... Well, I always return to Doom. It scotches me since 1993. None of the present games brought me the same attraction. It's quite disturbing... It's a real drug. For example, I've played Quake 1 & 2 just two or three times, same for Duke, Half-Life and all his little brothers just once and that's said. But Doom, it's almost every day... I can't help playing it. I love the atmosphere of that game, never equaled today to my mind. I love the graphics even if they are "old design"... Of course, there are some little exceptions like Unreal (there's something special in that game, I like it), and maybe Blood 2 for the gore stuffs... Let's see about Return To Castle Wolfenstein and Doom III. So, is Doom the perfect game ? 0 Share this post Link to post
Kid Airbag Posted November 18, 2001 Oh, phew, when you said unbeatable, I thought you meant you couldn't beat the game. Like kill the bosses, etc. But yes, Doom is the best game of all time. Period. No, I'm not biased. What are you saying? 0 Share this post Link to post
Crendowing Posted November 18, 2001 So, is Doom the perfect game ?Ummmm, what do you think????? 0 Share this post Link to post
DooMBoy Posted November 18, 2001 Well, IMO, Doom is not the perfect game (/me puts on my Flame-Retardant suit[tm] for protection against the flames), but I've played so many games that have screwed up the game engine and whatnot and turned the Doom-like game bad and therefore mad it suck. This makes seem as though Doom is the perfect game....... 0 Share this post Link to post
LorD BaZTArD Posted November 18, 2001 /LorD BaZTArD Retrieves a bottle of Acid, and proceeds to pour it on Doomboy's Fireproof suit. Then loads up trusty RTCW Flamethrower and Points at Doomboy /LorD BaZTArD Pulls the Trigger.... Say What?, That title fits man, it really does. Also: It's Already proven that Return To Castle Wofenstein Ownz! (See Both MPTests!) Also: As of 17 November: RTCW WENT GOLD! W00T. The US get's it on the 21st, everyone else should get it within a week or two! 0 Share this post Link to post
Zaldron Posted November 18, 2001 DooM's not the perfect game. No game can be, or at least not for an entiry community. 0 Share this post Link to post
xit-vono Posted November 18, 2001 These games are all a matter of taste really. If you go to a Quake forum you will probably see similar opinions but reversed. They think doom is cool but quake is an awesome game. Both games have serious flaws in the game engine: doom: strafe 50 through linedefs don't trigger them sometimes wallrunning switch from above/below tricks keygrabs visplane overflows quake: bunnyhopping grenade/rocket jumping(I think this is cool, but the levels weren't designed for this) I think people with faster computers can swim faster in quake. I really can't say too much more because I'm not an expert. Overall they are still fun. 0 Share this post Link to post
Lüt Posted November 18, 2001 Both games have serious flaws in the game engine:That's rather irrelevant since there's ports for each now. There's likely nobody who has Doom installed that doesn't have a fixed engine of some sort or another. 0 Share this post Link to post
Davidoom Posted November 18, 2001 DOOM is not the perfect game. But the best of the best. It's perfect in a sense that no other game can capture the atmosphere and at that time.. originality of DOOM. 0 Share this post Link to post
Lord FlatHead Posted November 18, 2001 So, is Doom the perfect game ? No game is perfect. But some come pretty damn close. Like with novels, movies and works of art, some are instant classics that redefine a certain style and are of influence to everything that comes next. Ultima Underworld. Civilzation. Doom. X-COM UFO Defense. Doom III. 0 Share this post Link to post
Zaldron Posted November 18, 2001 Ultima Underworld. Civilzation. Doom. X-COM UFO Defense. Doom III. Being a little optimistic there, right Flathead? Aw what the heck. I'm wishing that too. 0 Share this post Link to post

Liam Posted November 19, 2001 I like all the old shooters. Doom, Wolf, Duke, Blood, but especially Heretic/Hexen. 0 Share this post Link to post
magikal Posted November 20, 2001 Yup Doom is the best (not perfect) game around for more reasons than any other game. It's gameplay is finely balanced and definitive of it's genre, probably partly by luck/chance but hey then again they say you create that yourself. The underlying theme of good vs evil stirs basic emotions in all of us,the monsters especially are classic symbolically evil types present in human cultures throughout the ages.Again that decor, the skulls, the pentagrams, the torches etc.,its all primeaval stuff.Even now the sprites vs polygon thing/no. of monsters possible on the screen;sprites still have the upper hand until technology develops enough for polygons to be more realistic and flat edges un-noticable,Quake3's getting there, but 1&2 cummon!? 0 Share this post Link to post
danarchist Posted November 20, 2001 Best game ever = contest between Doom and Civilization Also, runners up include Diablo II, Quake II, Planescape: Torment, and Majesty (don't ask). 0 Share this post Link to post
deadnail Posted November 20, 2001 I have a feelin' that Undying might be the same way. Damn that game 0wnz. 0 Share this post Link to post
DiSTuRBeD Posted November 20, 2001 Well, IMO, doom is perfect. I can always play doom, enjoying it more and more every time. We've tried to improve the game with sourceports, but failed. They make Doom worse. /me ducks 0 Share this post Link to post
Bane Posted November 20, 2001 I'm quite sure that Doom is unbeatable. Hahaha! 0 Share this post Link to post
Bane Posted November 20, 2001 it IS the perfect game, it's the most legendary games ever developed, and it will stay in our hearts as long as we live, and longer when we get up to heaven. 0 Share this post Link to post

Sephiroth Posted November 21, 2001 what are u talking about doom is a great work of art. It should be in a art musem next to all the famous shit. Or even better the musem of doom, all things are doom. paintings, levels, textures, sculptures, doom porn, and a giant inflanted imp 0 Share this post Link to post
mr8 Posted November 21, 2001 I'm quite sure that Doom is unbeatable. Hahaha! I meant unbeatable in the atmosphere and the ambiance game. Not "Doom is too tough for me" ;) Mmmh... Yes, Plutonia is too hard for me without a little bit cheats. I must replay it to be sure ! (Mwahahahaaa the big joke) 0 Share this post Link to post
Captain Red Posted November 21, 2001 I have NEVER Played an id game I didn't LOVE. (except maybe the commander keen games). I don't see why people gave Quake 2 such a hard time... Mmmh... Yes, Plutonia is too hard for me without a little bit cheats. ROTHLMFHO! 0 Share this post Link to post
SirRobin Posted November 21, 2001 doom: strafe 50 through linedefs don't trigger them sometimes[/b] As a level designer this really sometimes pisses me off - specially that it's NOT fixed in BooM!! Is it fixed in other source ports, btw? Well, it's understandable bug originally though - I dont think that such thing as strafe 50 was actually planned to exist. 0 Share this post Link to post
