it is hard to find old software and games, even if it is a year or two old. Hell i have not even seen collectors doom or doom GBA. It is even a bitch to find good old ISA cards, got a classic 486 that needs a new ISA sound blaster. Even worse is finding older versions of and OS, like DOS and win3.11 or even somewhat new ones like 98se. I found win1.1 online once, now that was old. I have had to resort to abandonware to get older games like keen and a few others

You can buy old used 486's for like $30 (at least you can where I live. That's $30 Canadian to boot.) It may seem like a waste to buy a whole computer just to get a soundcard or a stick of memory but for stuff that old you really don't have any other choice.

That's not true, he could choose to go have gay sex with Lüt in his basemen.. uhh.. oops, that's already been suggested.

nah i built this whole system for like 25 dollars, excluding the case and monitor. I spent more on the ram too than anything else. It is mainly used as a diagnostics computer to run test but i play classic games with it.

here is the prices:
motherboard/CPU combo(new) $5
VESA SVGA card came with mother board
DBL side 8mb SIMM's $8 (a pair)
hard drive 2GB IDE $10
IDE controller card free
ISA LAN card $5
misc stuff $15
case(used AT) $10

other shit:
new keyboard and adapter $10
serial mouse $5
monitor $30
well i suppose it is a bit more than 25 but the basic stuff cost less than that. all i need is an ISA soundcard and i am set

I wish I had my very own CG farm. Multithreaded render *drools*

Even a pair of PII's would be enough.

A lot of computer shops in my area, Denver, are selling all kinds of old cards for $5. They have so many old cards they put them in big boxes or bins and just beg you to take it off their hands. Most of the drivers are of course available on the net for free.

Look in a local computer repair shop.

God, I wish I knew of a place in Winnipeg like that. The only store I saw with any potential was named "Computer Rennaisance", they advertised themselves as specialists in old PC stuff.. but.. they're a horrible place. I went in there looking for any old atapi cd-roms they had, he said "uhhh once in a while we get an 8X as a trade in, and then they're $60" back when the real value should've been about $20.

I really don't like that place. They sell old 14" monitors for like $150. Sigh.

I wish I knew of a place with piles of old junk that you could piece together a machine with. Like a computer junkyard.

There used to be a small store at my university that sold old computer junk, they had loads of old 486es and vga monitors etc., unfortunately they got shut down earlier this term :(. It was sad watching it go.

i am gonna take my ass to a computer show and get some shit there. also there is a local store that is building a stock of old parts, but slowly. They have been around only 1 year and they seem like they will be there for many more. Almost every time i go in they have some new junk at good prices, but it is usally not what i need or am looking for.
a 14" monitor 125!!! now that is wrong and a 8x at 60! hell a new cd-rom DVD is 60, burners too. hell i would barly pay 10 for a 8x used. and i got a 14" monitor for 30 last time too and it is really good

Hmm...there's some store that is/was around here that went by the same name. One day my friend went there, and this lady took her computer in to be repaired. The guy there booted it up and it came up with a 'non-system disk error'. The guy then says 'hmmm...I believe I'll need to hold on to this for a few days and investigate this error'. So my freind says 'but all you need to do is remove the disk from the floppy drive'. Then the guy shoot him this glare-of-death and so on. I forget how the story ended, but its all fucked up anyway.
