Arch-Valentine Posted July 29, 2007 Ultimate Doom: E1M8 - You knew you were screwed the moment the music starts. E2M2 - Always liked maze-like levels. Very tense atmosphere. E2M4 - This level always spooked me. I still love it :) E2M7 - I Love this level for some reason. E2M8 - Cyberdemon. Nuff said. The entire 3rd episode - I love hellish levels! E4M3 - Good level. Doom 2: Map 8,10,13,15,16,,19,,23,24,27-30 Evilution: Everything from map 18 on up (Plus Secret levels). The previous levels were kinda easy. 21 surprised the crap outta me.(Never seen a map surprise me.) Map 27 was probably my favorite for being so hellish. Plutonia: I like them all however, maps 5,9,11(innovative!),22, 28 and 29 are standouts for me. 0 Share this post Link to post
myk Posted July 29, 2007 Vader said: As it seems, I'm one of the very feew people who like Doom2's maps generally better than the one from it's predecessor... it's propably because I've just watched my brother playing Doom, while I for myself started the serial with Doom2 a few years later! I doubt it's very few people. Anyone who appreciates playing (the challenge) will see that many DOOM II levels are more suitable and juicy in that department. While it's uneven, ou might like episode 4, because it's got some challenging parts compared to the core game episodes. 0 Share this post Link to post

Not wanting to start a taste flame war, but I think E3M7 is a weak level. It's too easy to pass, yet it's the next-to-last level of the final episode... 0 Share this post Link to post
LogicDeLuxe Posted July 29, 2007 There are so many good maps, I don't really have a favourite. Though, it certainly would not be E3M7, not due to the gameplay, but it always felt to be the ugliest map in the game to me. 0 Share this post Link to post
Jello Posted July 29, 2007 My personal favorites are e3m3 and e3m4. They still stand out in my mind. The claustrophic feeling of e3m3, from the start to the finish, and that long marble hallway in e3m4 are scenes that I will always remember. The first episode, especially e1m5 used to stand out in my mind because it was the first time I saw a demon, or had imps come from behind me and kill me. But I was 8 at the time, and had never really noticed the imps untill that point, so it was really scary. Plus it was the first time I had played Doom. After that though, the only levels that seem really memorable are Pandemonium and House of Pain, they were both really fun to play through. Of course O' of Destruction left an impact because it was the first time I saw an Arch-Vile, and of course Tricks and Traps because it was was the first time I met a Cyberdemon. (I got Doom 2 before Doom 1.) But still, Pandemonium and House of Pain are my Favorite Doom levels. Monster Condo and the Spirit World come in pretty close as well. I always liked the level names for Thy Flesh Consumed, but most of the levels seemed to blur together too much. 0 Share this post Link to post
Sinfis Posted July 29, 2007 The Shores of Hell is best what Doom has ever offered. All levels of that episode has so strong, gloomy and cold atmosphere. And those mountains against the red sky, it looks so damn good. It really gives you the feeling, that you are on the shores of Hell. And the best level of that episode is absolutely e2m4, Deimos Lab, because of its design and music. 0 Share this post Link to post

That level is great for a pistol start, but if you have the bfg, it's too plain easy. Pandemonium is a great example of a good non-linear map. 0 Share this post Link to post

KennyJC Posted July 30, 2007 Anything by Romero. I don't think he ever did a weak map for D1 or 2. Map15 of D2 is the coolest level ever made to this day! 0 Share this post Link to post
Jello Posted July 30, 2007 DJShrimpy said:According to you, this is only possible in those two source ports because The BFG acts differently than it does in the original .exe. I think it fixed some problem with the tracers on it or something, but in Zdoom you can kill a spidermastermind with one shot from it, as opposed to two or three. 0 Share this post Link to post

Maes Posted July 30, 2007 I particularly liked Pharaoh and Carribean from TNT, perhaps because they felt so different from most other maps, at least those to be found in an IWAD. 0 Share this post Link to post

BoldEnglishman Posted July 30, 2007 I have to agree that I don't find E3M7 particularly interesting at all. If Doom was a CD, and each level a track, whenever it came to E3M7 I'd hit the skip button. 0 Share this post Link to post

GGG Posted July 30, 2007 Doom: E3M7 Doom II: Grosse Evilution: Map 20 (would have been Map 31 too if that damn yellow key bug didn't ruin it) Plutonia: Maps 26 and 27 printz said:TNT: Evilution -------------- Level 20, Central Processing. Huge level, suspense too. Seconded. Really raised the bar on epic levels. Especially the part where you teleport through various early areas of the level near the end to remind you how long that level really was. As in movies where something that happened early on reappears near the end and you realize how long you've been in that movie's world. 0 Share this post Link to post
printz Posted July 30, 2007 MAP31 was killed by red sky (from TNT Evilution not Doom2 or Plutonia). Another reason I hate the Doom 2 engine. Inconsistent to the theme of the whole episode, too. And TNT MAP32 looks like a stock Doom 1/2 wad from mid 90s. Lack of textures and Doom's inability to render slopes is improper. 0 Share this post Link to post
emailking Posted July 31, 2007 My favorite official-game level definitely has to be map 20 of tnt. The music is evokes powerful emotions (in me anyway) and goes perfectly with the level. The level is beautiful. It's challenging but well balanced. And there are so many different sceneries you play through but it all works somehow. A stand-out map in an otherwise mediocre megawad. 0 Share this post Link to post

My favourite was E4M1 Doom 2 Map04, Map06, Map10, Map16, Map21, Map23, Map25, Map27, Map30. Plutonia Map31, Map32. (I can't believe it took me ages to notice Map32 had the base of Doom 2's Map01 =S) TNT. Map20. *******ly. 0 Share this post Link to post

Shin Godzilla Posted August 2, 2007 1: E1M8 2: E2M2, E2M4 3: E3M5 4: E4M8 (if only for the zombie massacre near the start :P) Doom2: Map13, Map15 (yeah, city maps are pretty much my favourites) Plutonia: Map11 (Arch-Vile mazes FTW!) Evilution: Map20, Map31 0 Share this post Link to post
printz Posted August 2, 2007 Maes said:You demolished my favourite maps :-( Actually Plutonia MAP32 also fails in my ratings. Opening an original id level, expanding, retexturing it a bit and stuffing it with super powerful beasts and items for balance sounds like valiant wad beginner work to me. Beginner, yes. Anyone can try and succeed this. Valiant, yes. As when making something low quality and ignoring the gantlet. 0 Share this post Link to post
