Shapeless Posted September 23, 2008 I have a BFG 6800 Ultra. I'm going to get a new card sometime this week but don't know what to get. I hear people talk about ATI making good cards, but some people say to get Nvidia cause they have better drivers and lowered their prices. I would also like to say that I don't want to spend $500 I'm thinking around $300. 0 Share this post Link to post
Captain Red Posted September 23, 2008 ATI tends to be more compatible with older games if you're ever feeling nostalgic (and if you post here I guess you would) but at times gets something called the ATI Bug I know about the ATI bug because I had it for months and months and months and it drove me batty with blue screens and hard locks at random no matter how many fixes I found. I didn't manage to fix it till I dropped $500 on a Nvidia card. 0 Share this post Link to post
leileilol Posted September 23, 2008 ATI does make good cards Good drivers are another story. Since the AMD merger they recently kicked the fglrx driver in the butt and they listen to their customers and improve their driver. 0 Share this post Link to post
berd Posted September 23, 2008 You may want to go with the ATI 4870(Not X2). It's the best card around your price range. caco_killer Posted September 24, 2008 I don't think anyone should pay more then $150 for a graphics card. I paid like $140 for my ATI Radeon X1300 when I bought it two years ago and it still works great with modern games. I mean it's not running Crysis at 1280x1024 at 60 frames per second with all the graphics settings maxed out, but it runs them good enough for my (low) standards. 0 Share this post Link to post
Cameron Law Posted September 24, 2008 Well I use a GeForce 8600GT (Zotac). nice and cheap, plays modern games at high quality. Not the best, but if you are on a budget it works better then you should need as long as you don't demand the highest quality on everything. 0 Share this post Link to post
StoneFrog Posted September 24, 2008 If you're still on AGP get a BFG GeForce 7800 GS OC by Nvidia. I have one, and despite still being on a single core processor and having 1GB RAM, I can still run the Orange Box at 40+ FPS at high settings. 0 Share this post Link to post
Aleaver Posted September 24, 2008 Yep same here...Thats exactly what I have..Same result. Handles most games just fine..For being an AGP card. Only game I have seen thus far that I have to run the graphics on a lower setting was Crysis. 0 Share this post Link to post
Shapeless Posted September 24, 2008 Well my Pc turns 4 yrs old in april and it's not worth it to spend too much on a video card, cause the PC is a bottleneck and will hold it back Athlon 64x FX55 Asus AN8-SLI Deluxe 2.61 GHz 3 gigs of Ram BFG 6800 Altra OC so I'm not planing on running crisis, just the HL2 episodes, they Hunger episodes (if they ever come out)Bioshock, Left 4 dead. I just want to extend the lifespan of this PC a little longer. I will shurly invest in a new mombo in 6-9 months. I wonder how far should I go due to the fact my pc can't keep up with a top of the line card. would this card be overkill Visiontek Radeon HD 4870 Video Card and give the the same performence of a lower end card due to my older system holding it back? 0 Share this post Link to post
