StoneFrog Posted October 10, 2008 I've always wondered out of curiosity of id had its own in-house program for making the DOOM maps or if they coded them somehow and editors were later made to cater to players. This rome.ro image mentions "DoomEd", though I can't find much on that (save for a Planet Doom link). So does anybody know about how DOOM was originally mapped for? 0 Share this post Link to post
John Smith Posted October 10, 2008 Doom was made with a very early map editor for NeXT machines called DoomEd. Note that it is not the same as the DOS utility of the same name. 0 Share this post Link to post
fraggle Posted October 11, 2008 Romero has the sources to the editor and has talked about releasing them several times, but still hasn't. Note that the editor ran under NeXTStep, so it would be very difficult to port to DOS or Windows. In fact, it would be easier to port to Linux or MacOS as they provide the same API (Cocoa, GNUstep). Sort of related, you can see a screenshot of the Quake editor here. 0 Share this post Link to post
StoneFrog Posted October 11, 2008 Wow. Those guys did sloppy work. I guess their VIS was less evil. I thought it'd look more like Hammer, guess not. 0 Share this post Link to post

Might not be so easy to port to DOS, but who cares about DOS anyway? 0 Share this post Link to post
