Mantis Shrimp

Recommended Posts

I stumbled across this thing while surfing youtube a few days ago. Very interesting creature. While not technically a shrimp (really a stomopod), it looks like one, and is a voracious eater. They spear or smash their prey then feast, depending on the species. Their appendages have the velocity of a .22 bullet. Because of this they can crack aquarium glass.

Intro may seem dumb but its shows both smasher and spearer variants

They're pests and they multiply like rabbits, and have been known to torture their prey before eating it, sometimes forcing the victim to watch as the torn flesh is eaten.

if you get one, expect everything else in your aquarium to be gone in a matter of hours.

You bring up the mantis shrimp and you skip over it's hyperspectral colour vision! The fucker can see everything besides time.

Crap, yeah forgot to mention that. Apparently it can see through 12 color channels, including ultra-violet and infra red.
