On mine I need DirectX for SDL engines, or video won't work properly. This might depend on the video card, but perhaps these engines generally require DirectX to run in Windows 9x. 0 Share this post Link to post
chungy Posted December 4, 2008 I generally do my testing on clean systems with very little extra installed (eg, the Win95 system is just a QEMU virtual machine, with absolutely nothing except the Plus! pack (which makes it more usable for me, since I can drag windows without seeing just a border); not even any drivers were installed, it's just stock 95). None of the Win9x/Me systems support Chocolate Doom with DirectX out-of-the-box, which could probably be fixed by installing a newer version of it, but I didn't test that. It's only Windows 2000 and up that don't need any such work-around. 0 Share this post Link to post
Gokuma Posted December 4, 2008 Just to clarify the specs of the three comps I'm using: Windows 95 version B (Yes, I know there's a version C that allows partitions greater than 2gb, but it loses some compatibility, such as support for Gravis GRiP multiport) 120mhz Pentium Packard Bell (my family got in 1995) 1mb Cirrus logic video chip 32mb ram (originally had only 8) Sound Blaster AWE32 (shitty original sound card+modem combo died, original mouse broke, original monitor died, still has original 1gb hard drive but made it the slave and added a 3.1gb as the master) This computer starts and shuts down the fastest! Windows 98 Second Edition and Gentoo Linux 700mhz AMD Athlon custom built in 1999 16mb Voodoo 3 TV AGP 128mb ram Sound Blaster Live Platinum A couple months ago the Asus K7M motherboard was killed by a defective ram stick I added that literally burned up. The next morning I ordered an exact replacement off ebay for $12 plus $12 shipping and rebuilt the thing. Windows XP service pack 2 1.4ghz e-machines laptop (was given to me) 64mb video ram 448mb ram Defective POS that has overheating problems. I keep it on a playstation cooling stand or sometimes put an ice pack underneath it. The SB Live Platinum doesn't get along with PrBoom 2.02 or dos allegro sound libraries. Windows Doom Legacy 1.32 (actually 1.31 had either one or both of these problems) and up doesn't get along with the SB AWE32 and performance takes a dive on the 120mhz like most other windows ports. I haven't tried a recent version on that comp. Under dosBox on the WinXP laptop, original dos versions of Doom engine games have a momentary bit of lag at some interval making them annoying to play. 0 Share this post Link to post

Try using kXproject drivers for the card, i have no issues with prboom here. Don't do DOS with the Live card. Get an ISA card to handle that. 0 Share this post Link to post
