What's the best enhanced DOOM program for...

Recommended Posts

dehack support, recorded demos, external PWADs (including sprites), pretty graphics (e.g., color lightings, len flares, etc.), etc. I want to replay my old DOOM II modifications (http://alpha.zimage.com/~ant/antfarm/files/doom2/j2doom/j2doom.html) that I made in the past, but I couldn't get them to work fully with jDoom v1.11.

I almost got my "Da Kills" to work fully, but it locked up in the same area (map 2) and it had some minor glitches. Jungle II was many glitches especially with sprites and layout. Are there other DOOM enhancements that work that uses 3D card like jDoom? I want pretty graphics and stuff. jDoom made me drooled.

Thank you in advance for a reply. :)

Well, there's ZDoomGL (http://www.doomworld.com/doomgl/), but that's extremely unstable and tends to crash every five minutes.

Legacy (http://legacy.newdoom.com/) and EDGE (http://edge.sourceforge.net/) both have GL modes, but I'm not sure how good their DeHackEd support is.

Hmm, has anyone tried playing any DOOM modifications (e.g., total conversions like Aliens TC) successfully with any of these programs?

heh, I wonder what he did.

He wouldn't shut up :P

best enhanced engine

For GL stuff, the one I've found to work best is JDoom, although you can't get rid of it's nasty blurring effects. The best software port with the most features would be ZDoom, although it alters gameplay enough to frustrate me and other hardcore Doom players. The best true-to-the-original Windows engine is PRBoom, although it doesn't have the fancy map-making features of ZDoom.

Does anyone have problems with jDoom not playing recorded demos in DOOM II modifications? The demos from original DOOM I and II work fine, but not from mods like mine :(.

Thank you in advance for a reply.

Hardly any source ports can play demos properly. I think Jaakko noted that he dropped proper demo support in JDoom as of version1.0

PRBoom should be your best bet to play demos. ZDoom sure as hell doesn't stand a chance.

Thanks, Lut. I am just amazed by jDoom's graphics. It feel like playing DOOM III or something ;). I will check out PRBoom. I was going to get zDoom, but you said recorded demos don't work. Argh! I just want to see some recorded multiplayer games. :)

I was going to get zDoom, but you said recorded demos don't work.

Demos made for Doom.exe won't. You can record demos with ZDoom, but they'll only playback properly in ZDoom. Almost all demos are recorded with Doom.exe, which is why I keep PRBoom around for demo viewing.

Really? I thought these ports are supposed to keep the demos intact. Argh!

ROFL.

I used to think that way about the controls and gameplay myself. The early versions did, but not these monster Über-ports that are out now. They're something else entirely.
