Photos of the Tootsietoy Dakota (Doom Shotgun)

Recommended Posts

G'day everyone. I don't know how many of you will be interested, but I managed to get my hands on the Tootsietoy Dakota shotgun (there was a seller on ebay selling heaps of them).

I actually ended up buying two. One was brand-new still packaged, and the other was second-hand but I think it was closer to what was used in the game by looking at the appearance of it.

I took some posed shots to see if I could emulate how it looked in doom (from memory! I haven't played it since about 1999.).

Anyway, here's some pics (don't kill me because I suck at html code, I might screw this up).

That's me and my un-Kevin-Cloudish arms (Mine are pale, thin and hairy, his are tanned, huge and hairy, so I guess it's Me 1, Kevin 3)

I held the camera above my head for this one, I was trying to get a nice clear side-shot (came out horrible).

Caution: My face is in this shot, shield your eyes.

I also produced a hideous 3d model of the shotgun, it can be seen on my DeviantART page - http://stormware.deviantart.com/gallery

This one is a newer model, and has an ugly engraving on the side, as well as a cheaper looking plastic and different checkered-grip pattern. I will photograph the older shotgun when I get it back from
a friend. If for any reason you guys want any more photos, let me know.

Anyway, just thought you guys might be interested.

EDIT: Apologies for the oversized pics, I url'd them.

Really nice find. The second shot really looks like the shotgun sprite, or at least the alpha version one. The sprites were modified a bit before they made it into the actual game, especially the barrel of the idle sprite.

Btw, you might consider URLing the images or resizing them. They're kinda big. Edit: ROFL. Good model. I thought it was real until I noticed some of the edges weren't perfectly round.

Sorry about the size, should be fixed now.

It's interesting to see the real deal with the shotgun. I remember the victory image of the Marine standing outside the city with Daisys head in one hand, and the shotgun in the other. The shotgun looks the same, although the stock was sawed-off.

Good shots! For me, it's the "proceeding to pump" shot that's most strikingly like the sprite.

http://img517.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsci0001wz5.jpg
That's really not very menacing. I'm sorry.

Hehe, it's not meant to be, but I'm not a very aggressive person, I can't give a menacing aurora off >< Although I do have a photo of me with an FBI hat, aviator sunglasses and jacket on pointing it at a camera somewhere around here.

Funnily enough, I had trouble remembering how the "proceeding to pump" part looked, so I just snapped for the heck of it.

I'm not sure that it's actually close to the sprite at all, as I haven't checked, but somehow it still feels right.

Originally, the "Spare Shot" was my first try at it, although it was waay too tilted to the left. I straightened it up and tried to get that look with my hands that made it look like it was coming from the far left.

I just need some brown gloves to top it off. If I can get a white-background and access to my friends superlab where he has all sorts of neat photo equipment, I'll print the original sprites out (anyone have them handy?) and I'll mimic them as close as I can and photo the shotgun in the closest conditions I can for some fun, might stick it in a wad.

So that's the toy they used, huh? I had the same one back in the day. Had I known that, I probably wouldn't have let my neighbour smash it in half.

I once had that same one too. I can really see the resemblance in those shots. The idling one obviously looks a lot like the Alpha version of the shotgun, specifically how the hands look huge compared to the barrel. I think the sprite for that used in Doom was made from scratch. Also I noticed that they must have edited the pump to look more wooden than plastic. Aside from that they look identical.

I always wanted one of these shotguns...does it actually fire projectiles (i.e. rubber or foam darts) or is it just a "pop" gun?

Coolio! The reload pictures really do look like it. On a slightly related note, nice Chris Redfield costume, although I think you'd look better as Barry.

Hehe yeah, I've got a crap nose + balding furiously, so I reckon I'd suit Barry a little more, plus I have a little more weight on me than Redfield. Plus, I took the pics since I had the costume on to photograph for ebay, but when I attended Supanova in 2008 as Chris Redfield, I had no beard and thicker black hair (I want his ridiculously low hairline). Problem was, I was a bit fatter then, and lacked the jaw definition of Chris, so I reckon I should've grown a beard and done Barry instead too.

Also, for those who asked about projectiles, the shotgun does not fire projectiles (the end has a red tip inside), it does however have a removable magazine, which you can put strip-caps (those pink tape-style caps) into the mag, and fire, pump (it'll eject the spent part) and be ready to fire the next cap. Quite a bloody neat shotgun, and it makes a hell of a pop/clap sound even when dry-firing (nothing in the magazine).

Wait till you see the original one I have coming back from the friends house, there's a few slight differences with it, and it looks a lot more like the original pics they used. The alpha one also has the original muzzle-ring at the end, although they removed that in later versions of Doom. Mine has an ugly red-tip on it, which I'm going to remove since "replica" guns don't require red tips in Australia. Took a while convincing customs this wasn't a replica, and in the end I had to just import it on my Collectors Licence in Queensland.

Taking it from better light conditions, you might see it better too. If I have a white light in front of me, you'll see the two white "dots" or "eyes" on the sights as seen in the game.

Cool! That shotgun looks pretty powerful, especially against living things!

That quote sounds very familier.

Are you poking fun at Barry Burtons quote from Resident Evil 1 where he gives Jill a set of Acid rounds and says "They're really powerful... especially against living things."?

Hi again guys.

I couldn't seem to post in my last thread, so I selected the "DUMB" icon and am posting a new one.

Here are some photos of the original Tootsietoy Dakota shotgun that John Romero and John Carmack used in Doom, instead of the cheap modern plastic piece of crap that I had in the last thread.

I also plan to get some photos of the original doom pistol, and the chainsaw. I can get my hands on an Eager Beaver, and as for the pistol, I asked John Romero on Yahoo Messenger the other day about it, he said it was a bright orange pistol they recoloured to black. I found the same one and it's on the way in the mail right now (Looks like a bright orange Beretta M92?)

Note the more intimidating body-shot since the last one sucked. Enjoy.

There it is, the wicked Tootsietoy Dakota.

http://img239.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsci0012yl5.jpg
Sadly I can't actually take "replica" shotguns to work.

Proceeding to Pump (Sorry for the darkness and awfulness of these shots, our house is incredibly dark down here in Australia, what with electricity on the way and all.

http://img12.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsci0004oy4.jpg
Pointing up, very dark shot... could sure do with that electricity you guys have over there.

http://img12.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsci0005yn7.jpg
Pumping (The pump doesn't quite work on this one), another dark shot... Hey Edison, how about sharing some of those light bulbs eh!?

http://img239.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsci0007op2.jpg
Here's two Dakotas sitting on my table. The top one is the early Doom-era one, and the bottom one is the brand new modern one. There's nothing else of interest there though except for my incredibly sexy aviator sunglasses.

http://img101.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsci0008rt6.jpg
Close up of both shotguns. The top one being the doom-era one, is made of strong thick black shiny plastic, and feels bigger/fatter and way more solid than the new one (they don't make them like they used to).

The bottom one is brand new, and was still in the packaging when I got it. It is made of that really really thin plastic that snaps really easily and has some ugly engravings on it. It also isn't as shiny as the old one despite being new.

The very bottom item is those sexy sunglasses again.

If we ever get electricity in Australia and some good lighting conditions, I'll get a white-screen and take some photos of the shotguns posed as close as I can to the original (if someone would be kind enough to provide those sprites) and then release them in high quality, maybe someone can put them in a .WAD someday. I would if I had my computer, but the seagate disk died after two weeks =(

Hey, cool. do you think you could take photos of that from each angle so it can be replicated easily as a 3d model?
Thanks

Sure thing mate =) Give me a few moments and stay put, I'll have some photos done.

Ok here we go. Sorry for the bad quality.

Also note, I have produced a 3d model of the Dakota, images of it can be seen in my DeviantART gallery -> http://stormware.deviantart.com/gallery I can release it freely if you guys want it.

If you want a particular angle or shot, let me know.

Sorry about the bad quality. Although if you can hang on for a few more hours, I can get ahold of a better camera and take some MUCH clearer better quality shots. I also will probably go outside tomorrow when it's bright with natural light and get some good pics. Don't forget to check my last thread a few threads down, which has some pics of the newer Dakota. It's technically the same shape.

I'm going outside to take more photographs. I'll post them in a few minutes, and they're likely to be a lot better than this lot was.

It's clear that the shotgun held by the marine in DOOM's title picture is also this gun. Even the tip is the same (except it's black instead of orange), and the butt is hidden behind the marine (if we follow the appearance of the shotgun zombies, it's not sawed off).

How so? "Post Reply" on the upper right or the lower right of the thread should do the job.

Yeah, I tried that, although my browser would go blank and just sit there, same thing went for replying in other threads, although it's working now.

I went outside, and took some quick shots in the light before the feds showed up for me having a "highly lethal and convertible replica shotgun" on my property.

Heh, no wonder there's an expression that goes "curiosity killed the cat".

Offtopic - there should be an expression "curiosity killed the ant". I found one inside my ADSL router, bridging a pair of solder pads near the phone socket and very dead.

Nice pictures - a few would have benefitted from manual/macro focussing.

I wish, although Feds in America get twice the pay as ones in Australia, plus they can't really use their guns here, so with severely reduced pay plus no legal use for a sidearm, it's not worth the risk and life.

I only do work in Security, was thinking of joining the AFP and becoming a Federal Agent at some point, but it doesn't look too promising. One day though...
