How do i mod?

Recommended Posts

I am sorry for making this sound so noobish, but for a while now ive been looking at peoples mods and stuff, but i want to try at modding some games, and i thought this was the best game to start at, so what programs and stuff would i need to make new weapons and enemies? Maps are easy and all. Once again, sorry for making this sound noobish :)

Since you are basically starting out on your road to modding, it is debatable if Vanilla DOOM / DOOM2 is the way to go.

The ZDOOM / GZDOOM ports, and their derivatives, are designed to be a modder's heaven. I would suggest to start with them right off the bat. You will find DECORATE and ACS SCRIPTING to be right up your alley.

And here are the essential links:

As an editor I would suggest Doombuilder 2,

although it is still in the development stage.

Else, use Doombuilder 1.

First, you will need to install a map builder. I recommend Doom Builder, it's easy to use and is flexible. There are also advanced options, but save those for when you have more experience.

Get it here: http://www.doombuilder.com/builder_download.php

Then, learn how to use it. Learn about sectors, linedefs, sidedefs, vertices, things, etc.

This is a little outdated (4.5 years old) but is good for beginners: http://drsleep.newdoom.com/tutor1.shtml. Read it. Read it well.

Try out some of the things the guide teaches you on Doom Builder. Then, experiment with Doom Builder. Make a room. Make another room. Make a door that connects the two rooms. Make a switch. Put some monsters, a player start, and a weapon with some ammo.

As you get better you can use stuff like ZDoom, where you can make your own monster, make scripts that enable special things to happen in the level, etc.

I'd recommend Slumped instead of XWE for most WAD managing needs, unfortunately its homepage is dead.

SlumpEd's homepage will probably rise from the ashes when the MancuNET upgrade is finished, in the meantime it can be downloaded from here. I'd suggest using both SlumpEd and XWE since each has it's strenghts and weaknesses.

Thanks for that, but your mirror points to an old version of Slumped (0.5a). Version 0.7 is the latest and the best. More features, less bugs.
