We haven't had a "favourite webcomics" thread in a while.

Recommended Posts

And we still won't, because this thread is strictly about MS Paint Adventures, and not your retarded furry fantasy comics you gaggle of freaks.

This is the most stylistically innovative thing to come out of webcomics in quite a while; I've been extremely impressed the whole way through. It starts like an adventure game parody, but quickly establishes an entire universe, epic and bizarre, with rules of physics that are perfectly consistent in their absolute inconsistency. Underlying this is great writing, art you'll quickly learn to love, and hilarious internal memes.

Read the archives over the next few days and you can catch the final updates when they happen, as it's due to wrap up on March 10.

Hm, haven't heard of this one. But, the first thing it reminded me of is Sluggy Freelance mostly because their absurd archive sizes.

It's my thread and I'll say what I want!

Read it, love it.

You'll like Daisy Owl.

Yes! I love Phil Foglio. Have ever since I saw his art on Magic cards. I need to buy the Girl Genius comics some day. Almost bought the first part once when I saw it in a comic shop.

MSPA is great. Doctor McNinja is awesome in all the good ways.
Girl Genius too; and if you like it I recommend you to look also at Buck Godot.
Gunnerkrigg Court is delightfully odd.
In a totally different genre, Nobody Scores! is cool too. I think it you like Something Positive, you'll like this one too; even though it's not really the same style.
D&D nerds will probably like Yet Another Fantasy Gaming Comic. On the same site, you can also find a Doctor Who comic.
Of course, I can't mention geeky comics without a link to Order of the Stick.

girl genius is my favourite. order of the stick was already mentioned and i doubt i have to even mention xkcd, so let's see...
goblins is similar to oots, but sorta from the other side
diesel sweeties for a steady supply of daily oneliners
dominic deegan is fun. was fun. it's whiny and longwinded now, i gotta drop the habit. but it hasn't gone as low as megatokyo yet.
white ninja for random absurdity

otherwise my most favourite comics are dead/on hiatus. rpg world was final fantasy inspired awesomeness, avalon high was witty and entertaining 'daily high school' in cute drawings, concerned is something doom should have too. exploitation now is the alfa and omega of webcomics, go read it if you dont know it. ghastly, perry bible fellowship, mac hall, sexy losers... i'm getting bored by myself typing.

oh yeah. evilkid webcomics is seriously obscure and weird, but gives you this elitist feeling when you read it. not 1337. pure caviar and champagne (with rohypnol) elitism.

That guy must be ancient. His comics were in early Dragon magazine issues.

Yeah, I did the same. I really regret I didn't get it.

He's 53 this year.

Achewood is the only one I check regularly. White Ninja I check every so often, as well as Penny Arcade just to see how far downhill it's gone.

p-a and pvp are a quality staple even after all those years, but i avoid cad since like two years ago. i think yahtzee was spot on when he made fun of cad in his zero punctuation special. he stopped with the funni and just spams texts ended with a nonsequitur pun.

Achewood is very good, but it seems to have gotten a lot more uneven in quality in the last few months in my opinion. There are still strokes of absolute brilliance (the Cornelius/Polly arc being one of the best in the entire strip) but it seems like Onstad is fishing for material more and more. This is probably because he has started that subscriber only service and to keep up with the added content demand he has to use ideas that either need more polishing or would not have made the cut in the first place.

I think the biggest thing Onstad needs to do is not allow the series to stagnate into a bunch of sitcom-like set pieces. One of the biggest strengths of Achewood is the character development, and the lack of formula. The last several months have had some strips that give you that Deja-vu feeling; the sense that you have already seen the characters in this situation before. Achewood doesn't have a real plot, but Onstad has been very good about either progressing an interesting episode involving the characters or showing us undescribed facets of a charater's backstory/psyche, even in "throwaway" strips not connected to the overall plot. Achewood is funny and moving because it is fresh. Recycling old situations and characterisms will turn the series into a Franchise Zombie.

Gunnerkrigg is indeed quite atmospheric, if a bit schmaltzy at times. I hope Siddell can keep up the recipe of mystery, strong characters, and interesting plot. I also hope he has a plan for the as-yet-unwritten part of the series, so he doesn't end up writing himself into a corner as so many comic authors have done.

Luckily Siddell doesn't seem to be too infatuated with the universe he has created, and thus far has spared us the assinine detail that many other fantasy writers indulge in. No one wants to read a disseration about the hierarchy of the seventh choir of angelic demi-gods and how they interact with the material world. He also doesn't give screeds based on a new-age philosophy formulated from reading the Lord of the Rings and watching and watching the movie "Fern Gully" too many times - unlike far too many self-important "authors."

The biggest challenge with the comic is going to be keeping the story moving forward while at the same time preserving the mystery. On one hand, he needs to keep some questions unanswered to maintain the atmosphere and interest of the story. On the other, if nothing ever gets explained the plot ends up running in circles. It will be interesting to see if he can pull it off.

QC hasn't been decent in a long time.

Dino comics got old, and I can't stand the naive college student vibe of xkcd. White ninja is still good but not as great as it once was. I miss pbf.

Don't forget Buck Godot: Zapgun For Hire, also made by Studio Folgio.

Edit: Seems several people have already mentioned that. I think that just adds to the statment that its quite good. :P

I only really read a few webcomics these days: xkcd, GU Comics, Brawl in the Family, Megatokyo, and Stolen Pixels.

He's been around so long that he invented the BSD daemon back in the 70s.

And yeah, his What's New With Phil and Dixie comics are on his site, along with his Buck Godot, which is pretty awesome. Kind of reminds me of Heavy Metal.
