The Free State Project.

Recommended Posts

Yeah, that's been around for years. It would be kind of cool if it worked. Might give more credence towards third parties then.

Wasn't there a Christian party movement that wanted all Christians to pile up in one state and take it over, and declare it a sovereign nation?

Heh. This reminds me of the Free-Town movement. Turns out they're related.

Boy, let's read this one, shall we?

from the article:
One member of the group, Larry Pendarvis, advocated ending "enforcement of Laws prohibiting victimless crime acts among Consenting Adults, such as Dueling, Gambling, Incest, Cannibalism and Drug Handling."

I have no comment on that, other than...

You say that as if it's a bad thing. :P

Plus some libertarians freely admit to being anarchists.

Peel the skin of a libertarian and you'll usually reveal an anarchist.

When I tried it, I unveiled a naive bourgeois.

I'd like to see what actually happens if this movement reaches its goal of 20,000

My guess is there'll be a lot of drinking and illicit sex for a week and then everyone forgets it ever happened.

I'm guessing the illicit sex will be followed by dueling, cannibalism and another membership drive.

Drinking the Kool-Aid sounds like a viable alternative.

You say that like it's horrible to be an anarchist. Actually anarchy would be a particularly good system except it's because of people that it doesn't work. People seem to be naturally stupid. You can have peace and anarchy at the same time. It IS possible. But everyone would have to do their part. As long as their are stupid people in this world anarchy won't work, unfortunately. I'm an anarchist, by the way... And there's nothing wrong with that. I'm a punk rock grrl.

Punk was created after a Fashion Designer with a vision met some shit disturbing hooligans. Anarchy! dur! dur! dur! Let's save the world based on false science by blowing up SUVs and save animals that have to be euthanized for which their bleeding heart liberators don't even have the money to care for them.

Give me a break.

As I said it's because of STUPID PEOPLE that it doesn't work...

I don't really get anarchy. Who's going to build roads, fund libraries, protect the populace, defend the nation, etc. etc. etc.?

The initiative is that everyone will have to do those things for themselves. The biggest problem with anarchy is that it doesn't really have an ability to stay anarchy. It will eventually develop into something.

Anarcho-capitalism, hopefully.

I definitely consider myself to be anti-statist, but I actively avoid calling myself an anarchist as this puts me in company with more braindead left-leaning socialist assholes than you can shake a stick at.
The kind of "anarchy" where private property rights don't exist is indeed really fucking retarded.
Anarcho-capitalism, on the other hand, I strongly believe would not only work, but would work far better in every conceivable aspect than any other system of governance and economics.

Private industry and the free market don't need a government to survive/thrive; exactly the converse is true.

They're still my favorite punk band, though.

Anarchy is an interesting theory, but it can never work. I wouldn't say it's due to stupidity, but rather out of the human (and animal) instinct to find comfort in law and order.

Here's a good video on the subject of governments (specifically the nature of American government) that Lüt linked to elsewhere...

Interesting video, and informative, as long as you stay mindful of its bias. Personally, I'm not convinced that social programs will inevitably doom us to being ruled by INGSOC.

If you take out the bias, I fail to see much left, other than nostalgia for the time of the founding fathers and an uncomfortable side impression that a republic is also only a factor in a process which always leads to something worse (that is, which does not suit its ideals). What else would you say is informative about it?

After all, bias usually dresses up facts and pseudo-facts in a fashion to suit its objectives...
