I need a debate topic

I've actually already considered Satanism and Communism as possible topics to debate. I think specifically the clause "is beneficial" is intended to mean "is beneficial for the United States", So ordinarily I would lose do to the first amendment of the constitution stating freedom of religion. Communism might be a good debate besides all the courses of history where it failed just about every single time.

How Communism has benefitted the United States:

* The military build up between Soviet Russia and the US resulted in the US becoming the dominant world power after the fall of the USSR, whose control has only just begun to wane.

* The threat of Soviet infiltration and invasion resulted in Western Europe forming close ties and military alliances with the US.

* The nuclear arms race between the US and Soviets and the doctorine of Mutually Assured Destruction saved millions of lives by limiting conflicts to fighting insurgencies in proxy nations, rather than engaging in the global "Total War" seen in the World Wars.

* The often military-influenced technological development that has shaped the modern world. Computers, satellites, the internet, navigation equipment and numerous other everyday tools were either invented or developed by the US military for intelligence gathering and other functions on the Soviets.

I guarantee you the third point will rile up many people.

Now that that's out of the way...I like the idea of debating the benefits of Communism. That is sure to put a lot of people on edge, which is fun. Dr. Zin gives good (or at least very usable) points.

The "Patriot Act" is beneficial - preventing acts of terrorism against US citizens is more important than preserving a few nebulous liberties.

Living on credit is beneficial - it generates more economic activity and growth than living within one's means.

Forfeiting research for cure for cancer/AIDS/what have you is beneficial.

Government controlled manslaughter of anyone of age past 18 that has IQ lower than 120 is beneficial.

Weighted vote/elitist democracy is beneficial, as opposed to letting anyone vote/everyone's vote being worth the same.

glaber said in that other thread:
These people are going to have to learn the hard way. Gay's CAN'T reproduce. If nature intended for us to be gay, women would not exist.

How the war on drugs has become an excuse for numerous civil rights violations?

Illegal searches and seizures. Unconstitutional restriction of firearms. Wire tapping. Planting of illicit substances on individuals to ensure a conviction.

Hey, come to think of it, American fascism is beneficial. You can discuss how the constitution gets ripped apart every time America gets scared and paranoid about something they dread, such as communism, weed, or terrorism (especially terrorism), and how the acts of government based on their fears relates to fascism.

Weren't they against it from the beginning?
