.ico file in Action Doom

Simple question: What does the .ico file in the Action Doom zip do and is it needed for gameplay?

An .ico file is an icon image file. 40x40 and usually uncompressed.

Actually, an .ico is usually 32x32 with 256 colors, though there does exist in the spec of the file the ability to include 16x16 and larger sizes, and also versions for lesser color depths. I've never seen an icon be 40x40

It can go up to 64x64, 128x128, or sometimes 256x256. Mostly though they are kept at 32x32 or 16x16 (all multiples of 8).

It's not required for gameplay AFAIK but can be applied to desktop shortcuts or used as the default icon for specific filetypes.

there is no 40x40 icons. The format is usually 16x16, 32x16 (2 color monochrome only icons), 32x32 and 48x48 (Large icons). 256x256 icons are only for Vista.
