The Fall of Newdoom

Recommended Posts

Doucheday? Douche Legacy? DoucheWadStatation? Douche Builder!

On a random tangent, the Legacy guys seem keen to have developers and people to move content to their SourceForge site. Well, really they probably need to find Hurdler to make some of that happen. Not sure. If you see him, send him that way. :)

What are wonderful surprise today - me, banned for ages now, getting an email asking me to pay to post at newdoom. It's hard to describe the joy I felt as I watched newdoom finally seize up and die. It makes me almost happy enough to do tech support - and we know how much I love that ;)

I think right now the only thing that would help would be a big fat apology and him resigning 100% from New Doom.

Five max posts per day is more than enough for Newdoom. No need to pay.

But still, the dissolution of the Newdoom community sucks, because Newdoom had quite some nice map-editing threads, where everyone was showing the progress.

Actually that was myself (when I was known as Melfice) and my friend who deleted the entire forum database because we couldn't stand WMull.

For lulz? So WMull was annoying back then too? But you got into his account, scrapped his forum. What the fuck.

Eh, you're more inclined to not post with a postage limit, even if you post once a day. The idea of being limited (in this case) when the internet is virtually incessant and 'modifiable' is ridiculous. Not that I'm saying the whole of internet is like that.

Heh, when pigs fly.. or whenever Mordeth or legacy gets released. =P
Funny, I never really did see Phoebus' evil side during my time at Newdoom, but I guess he never really did pay much visits to the forum anyway. Newdoom was a great place for me to lurk around, hone my mapping skills and to meet and greet eccentric people/Abyssians. RIP Newdoom.

BTW, before raven-games went down, I managed to back up all of the wonderful illustrated walkthroughs for the Serpent Riders games, as well as a number of rare mods for Heretic II.

Heh - I was busy archiving everything in sight. If you're missing anything, I might have it.

I believe the original Oblige devthread was over there, which I actively posted in during the first v2 (v3.37 actually) workings and release.

Now that it's over here, there's no need for a second thread over there when you're limited to FIVE POSTS a day.

William Mull, just give up and resign...you've let your ego get the best of you and screwed everything up..you couldn't even take a goddamn joke about yourself with that Legacy wad.

Actually I didn't "get into his account" - at some point when whoever else was involved (may have been deathz0r, it wasn't some sort of collaborative effort, I don't know who started it all) gave every account on the board administrator privileges. While I thought the change to bright flamboyant colors and tub girl at the top of the page was funny, all I did was find the self-destruct button. Not for the lulz so much as at the time a life of taking shit from redneck homophobes and finding a way to draw even with one on the internetz. Heh Phoebus got owned by some angsty teenager. Go him.

I think Slyde said he will be hosting Legacy from now on.

No, I offered, but it looks like smite is moving stuff to Sourceforge, which is cool with me. As long as it survives.

Hmm. Is the "Mindless Games" chickenbutt/brain/w/eyes logo based on that thing?

Ah, OK. Well, yeah, as long as it survives, and is released some time before I die, its fine with me!

I wonder, how many newdoomers were led to believe that Doomworld is "teh evil" by phoebus?

Wonder what they're thinking now? I really wonder what kind of baseless lies and propaganda was splattered about over there...

I won't name names, but there was a good handful of people who also referred to DW with terms like "that other site" and so on or directly said things like, "who cares about Doomworld, those assholes" and so on--I'm paraphrasing here of course.

But thankfully, most people simply just paid no attention to such things, and a few people even spoke out against that pointless site-bashing from time to time (myself included).

It really doesn't matter now, though. Chances are the DW haters will continue to hate this place and will go off to Planet Doom or something. Good riddance, honestly.

DW is considered teh evil on many of the different Doom forums. Not by everyone of course. But by many of the dwellers.
Usually it's by people who for one reason or another have been banned from here.

Yeah, I seem to recall occasional DW-hating over at ZDoom back when I visited there regularly (why I've stopped I can't really say, honestly). But of course, almost anyone banned is going to retaliate. That goes for likely any site on the web.

Actually, I remember hearing more nice things about Doomworld than about Newdoom before I even joined either of them. I knew EarthQuake back in the Half-Life editing heyday on the site The Wavelength. He mentioned something about the overall atmosphere at ND being kind of hostile.

Of course, I ended up joining NewDoom because of some questions about Legacy, but eventually Legacy stopped working on my computer. I don't think I've clicked on the Legacy section on there in a good four or five years. I have mostly just been on there to chat with the few members that I grew to like and respect, although most of them moved to The Abyss and started posting there more predominantly a looooong time ago. So honestly, I'm not all that sad to see NewDoom going this way. I already have all my friends.

I pretty much always ignored any of the DW vs. ND propaganda. We're all part of the same community, so I always felt it was pointless. Only reason I didn't really post here was because I had no need to in the past. :)

I mainly hovered around ND in the past because when I was active Doomworld was all about ZDoom and NewDoom was all about Doomsday or Legacy; There seemed to be a lot of fanboy-ism at both sites regarding ports the general community at each though were better than the other. Since I was trying to help on the Doom64 TC and it went to a modified Doomsday engine instead of ZDoom as originally planned (which ended up being 95%+ Kaiser :P) NewDoom seemed like the obvious place to be. The DSV website was hosted there back then, too. Also Picklehammer.

I'd been browsing around all the Doom related sites for a while before I joined, trying to find which would serve my needs the best, and Doomworld came off as more professionally run than any of the others. It seemed to have the most knowledgeable community as far as classic Doom was concerned, and I liked the site design better than most. I never intended to post much anyway, as I was simply looking for the place that would answer my questions the best. Nothing against Newdoom, mind you. Doomworld had a more thriving community and resources. It was the logical choice.

Of course, I've noticed elitism here just as much as at other sites, not in the sense that anyone thought this was the best site and fuck the rest, but more of a general sense of taking the site too seriously. Nowhere to the degree of the ego-driven Phoebus, of course. But, it's eased up a lot in the past few years. The community's definitely become more relaxed, and hence, I started posting more. I remember almost getting banned for a tongue-in-cheek pedophile joke, which in retrospect, would have been funnier in spoken form than in written.

Anyways, welcome Newdoomers. I mostly hang around to see progress on new WADs. Can't map worth a damn (granted, I've never tried) but love Doom. Woo.

And now, the non-professional opinion of a lurking bystander:

I've neither posted nor registered at Newdoom -- never felt the need to -- though sadly this type of end doesn't surprise me. Granted, I've never actually seen any of Mull's treachery (I use this term loosely without any real fire behind it) firsthand, but after silently keeping track of at least one side of the story for a while, this is unfortunately the most logical conclusion. It's been coming for a while, had all the stories I'd heard been true. Seems that they are.

In the end, Mull's ego imploded into itself, as was destined in the beginning. It's sad to see an entire community taken out with it, but it looks like that's just the way the cookie crumbles.

And major "heh" (in a semi-humorous way) on the true story behind the hacks. I suppose Xenphire is the player character in Doomworld Forums 3, then? ;)

If it makes a difference at all (probably not and off-topic to boot), I haven't seen any serious flames or statements against Doomworld for a long while (read: years) now. I can't even remember why the "flame Doomworld!" trend started or what it was about, though I recall a few people jumping on the bandwagon for whatever reason. Hooray, mindless internet conformity!

[EDIT] I had a hunch and searched on the other (ZD) forums a bit, and I came across a thread from ~2004 titled "Doomworld SUCKS", which I peeked through to much humor and insanity. Seems that Daniel was mad about something, decided to vent, and accidentally sparked a mass-venting of utter stupidity. Yay!

Ironically, I must've also been pissed off at a mod or admin (hell if I know why) at that time, 'cause I quoted and "agreed" with a post invoking Godwin's Law. :P Then again, who knows what the hell my 2004 self was thinking then. Young people do crazy things.[/EDIT]

Anyhow, there's only so long any form of community unity (heh) can last, but I have no hard feelings to any branch of the Doom community in general, for what it's worth. Hopefully I'm not alone in that regard. ;)

I suppose this is my cue to disappear once more.

I think I recall saying something nasty about DoomWorld once before, just because I had set myself up for the worst first impression (it was nothing to do with the administration). So, I hadn't said much beyond a few reviews for years. After seeing this happen, I so take everything back and will definitely try not to take things like a good administration for granted.
Maybe I'll be a bit more active here. The MFZ sucks right now and I promise not to bring anyone from there with me.

Yeah, you know why people on ND called this place "the other site?" It's because that bastard had a big list of things we weren't allowed to discuss and this place was on it! We got one troll or mini-flamewar on the topic and his solution was to hammer anybody who brought it up in any form.

For a long while this place was perceived rather widely as being less friendly to newbies. That might be because all the ones banned from here went there. :)

It's amusing seeing who's at TAb now. Al appeared there. That reminds me, I have to get my user cp there to stop mailing me when he sends me a PM.
