Ultimate Doom IWAD altered... by porn?!

Recommended Posts

Alright, last night I was trying to join an Ultimate Doom game on ZDaemon. Got an error for different IWAD version. Tried patching/unpatching. Errors still. It still plays just fine, though. Confused, I spent over an hour in XWE to try to see what was changed. I looked through the sounds, the maps, the sprites, textures, and finally the graphics. Guess what I found?

Y HELO THAR!

Any idea how the feck this could have happened? I know I used to play mods that required Deusf back in the day, but I thought those only made safe changes. I don't recall ever playing a porn mod, though (not counting the occasional retarded joke wad). Much less patching over my IWAD graphics with nude pics. :P

Am I going to have to get a new IWAD now?

Funny part is that you could've taken out your CD or whatever containing the Ultimate Doom installer, copy the good IWAD, and play ZDaemon in less time than it took to write up this thread.

I don't have my old CDs. I'm anti-CD.

Sadly, all my backups seems to be of this particular IWAD, so this wasn't recent.

I find it funny how many people seem to 'lose' their Doom CD. Why would you want to lose one of the greatest games ever?

Just rebuy it on Steam.

Actually if I recall correctly I didn't get my Ultimate Doom on a CD at all. I got it as a gajillion floppies before I had a computer with a CD drive.

Anyway yeah, I guess I'll need to rebuy it then. :(

I can understand if it happens on occasion. Sometimes you just lose stuff. For example, I don't have my original floppies of Doom 1 anymore but I still got the CDs with all my other games stashed away in a safe place. But knowing how important the unaltered IWAD is I got Doom.wad backed up on several backup CDs (one of which is where my other CDs are so I can't lose it.)

What I can't understand is being 'anti-CD' and apparently losing one's stuff intentionally. That's just idiotic.

Yes because I'm completely unable to download porn by the gigabyte elsewhere on the internet. :P

But this is real, vintage 1994 Doom pr0n, converted from vintage .GIF images :-p

Sure you can't easily beat that ;-)

I don't think I lost it intentionally.

Image's been banned by the sissies at imageshack. Good for you, because for this forum's rules' sake, you were supposed to hint that it's "not safe" for work, probably by using a !!WARNING!! <NSFW Not Safe For Work> tag and the address without a link, due to children visiting these forums, who fortunately can't yet read swears and sexual content, but may still see and understand what they see as images.

Great censor cacos what's next, impse? Oh wait...

It can still be seen if you paste the link in a new window/tab and hit refresh. It's just anti-direct-link policy, it's not like they'd bother reviewing and censoring millions of images every day.

Those censor cacos sure are cute.

That depends on how the batch files written - some rename and backup the IWAD then modify a copy of it, some modify the IWAD then undo the changes after you quit, others have no restore strategy beyond saving IWAD resources to a sub-directory before overwriting.

Good thing that Deusf can't mess with the CD or a CD-R backup copy. I really can't think of a reason not to keep such reliable backup media.

Since when does Imageshack have such a thing? I thought, linking pictures is the point of this site. What else could be the reason for the direct link, which it provides after uploading the picture?

That's funny. I'm wondering how this would have happened. Do you know anyone in person who knows how to edit wads?

Beats me, the best I can think of is that you must link to a provided .html link, but many people link to the thumbnail or pic instead.

I would start by checking for altered timestamps - on all NT-based windows OSes there are separate creation, modification and access dates for files (you may need to enable them in explorer though). If DOOM.WAD's creation date != modification date, then you can at least find out when that happened. Then, depending on what source port/launching method was used (and trying to at least guess what mod you had tried around that date), it just maaaaay be possible to find the culprit.

That is, if opening the WAD with an editor didn't also alter it....

This pre-dates my modern backup systems. :P

Ouch. And I presume the creation date is more recent, thus the file was modified way before you copied it to your modern box. Well, you really gotta remember where you got this particular copy from, then.

Anyway, since the damage seems to be only episode's 2 intermission background, you could try getting only that from somewhere...no?

IIRC, Doom is on 4 floppies, Doom2 is on 5. I'm not sure about the "Ultimate" version of Doom but the number is probably not a gajillion. :P

He was likely referring to the total number of floppies he had, any game or any use.

By technicality, I think not. ANY material from the original game is copyrighted.

Though of course that never stops people from using such material extensively in their mods. :P

But even if I did reinsert it, would the IWAD pass ZDaemon's IWAD checksum/CRC thingumybobber?

You sure a WAD just didn't end up in an autoloaded folder (like skins, for example)?

I'm as sure as XWE is sure. :P

Hmm

Draw your own representation of Deimos's overhead picture.

I think it was five. I had one or more of my Ultimate Doom floppies go bad, so for a few years after a dmgraph accident I also had a slightly altered IWAD (until I obtained the Collector's Edition). I think the rocket launcher sprite was replaced and I just dropped it back in from a shareware WAD, although the checksum was still wrong. No porn in my IWAD, (un)fortunately :-)

Point taken. If it was a resource that could be easily restored from the shareware version, you'd be over by now, but the IWAD would likely not be able to pass a CRC check anyway unless you get the garbage data and data holes precisely replicated, if one is indeed applied. It could be able to pass a size + date check though, if those are the only security measures implemented in ZDaemon.
