Zdoom stuff

The kind of wad I would like to make is a TC that plays like a Metroid game, one where you gain abilities and find secret items. I'd like to do something like this with Zdoom, but I'd like to ask a couple things. One, is it possible to create an item in which, when you pick it up, increases your max health? I know you can adjust your max health using script, but I'm not sure if you can do this with a pickup. Second, is it possible to make a monster drop a random item rather than something specific? For example, having a monster randomly drop either a specific ammo or certain health items? If so, can someone help me out with coding these effects?
