phi108 Posted July 28, 2009 So what would Doom look like in 3D? EDIT: More shots: Uppercut to the Cyberdemon face in 3D: Heretic in 3D: Grosse in 3D: And, a bunch of plasma packs in 3D. But what's that over the edge....: Cross your eyes to combine the images, to get a neat 3D effect. Thanks Wildweasel for the orioginal fake Doom on Virtual Boy image. And thanks Duducrazy for starting the thread that resulted in the most awesome image ever! Now everyone, begin the fake 3D doom screenshots creation. EDIT: More screens: http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/7568/3ddom6.png http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/1332/3ddom7.png 0 Share this post Link to post
Butts Posted July 28, 2009 I don't get it. My eyes are able to create a 3x3 grid of the images, but that's it. Since when are demons in e1m1? 0 Share this post Link to post
Super Jamie Posted July 28, 2009 That's really cool! I love stereoscopic images like this. I've even seen them in art galleries before. Big long goggles with sets of two pictures were considered a novelty item in the early days of photography. If you hang around on /s/ enough, you see 3D stereoscopic porn too. 0 Share this post Link to post
DeumReaper Posted July 28, 2009 Very cool. On the 2nd and 3rd screens I can distinctly see the players hands & chainsaw from a different perspective.Butts said: I don't get it. My eyes are able to create a 3x3 grid of the images, but that's it. Don't look at all six images at once. Choose one pair and cross your eyes until the corpse(or whatever) from both shots form one, then focus a little bit. 0 Share this post Link to post
Aldaraia Posted July 29, 2009 Haha I wish this could work for me, but my left eye is much more weak than my right eye, which is the dominant eye, therefore I have no depth perception. 3D movies are a mess of red and blue. Its some syndrome called myopia I think.... 0 Share this post Link to post
CODOR Posted July 29, 2009 Very neat. Eyeache inducing, though :-P How were they created? Freeze game, take screenshot, step to one side, take another screenshot, unfreeze game? 0 Share this post Link to post
DuckReconMajor Posted July 29, 2009 CODOR said:Freeze game, take screenshot, step to one side, take another screenshot, unfreeze game? It appears so, since the weapons don't merge together as they should. Other than that, this is so awesome. I just want to reach in there and touch E1M1. You'd probably get dragged into court several times for inducing seizures, but if a source port could play like this, I'd probably never uncross my eyes again. P.S. mind linking us the original thread? 0 Share this post Link to post
phi108 Posted July 29, 2009 http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=22986 That is the original thread discussing what doom would be like on the Virtual Boy. Actually for these screens, I took the shots without any hud weapons displayed, then I pasted them on at the correct positions to make it seem like they are right in front of you. And I used the ZDoom console command "freeze" which froze everythhing except me, so I could move around at will. 0 Share this post Link to post

I'm sorry. It's just that for some reason I can get everything but the weapons to line up. 0 Share this post Link to post
Super Jamie Posted July 29, 2009 The weapons don't merge for me either. 0 Share this post Link to post
Technician Posted July 29, 2009 I have the inability to cross my eyes. 0 Share this post Link to post
Lüt Posted July 29, 2009 I couldn't get it to work until I held up my hands and closed each eye to make sure my hand was fully blocking each duplicate column, then opened them again. Very nice, but another black bar separating the two column would be even nicer. 0 Share this post Link to post
KoiKitsune2006 Posted July 29, 2009 Nope, I can't see anything crossing my eyes. lol 0 Share this post Link to post
phi108 Posted July 29, 2009 To see the weapons line up, you have to cross your eyes even further. Think about looking at a monster at the end on the room, then look from there to your hand held in front of you. I think the weapon closeness effect is overdone, though. It is a bother to get the guns in focus. 0 Share this post Link to post

You are right, it would realistically be like that if you were holding your hand out in from of you (or had first person shooter syndrome, hehe). It is a pain though, for ease of viewing it would be better to line them up. 0 Share this post Link to post
Butts Posted July 29, 2009 God damnit. My shitty eyes can't see shit. What the fuck am I supposed to see!?!?!?!?!?!? 0 Share this post Link to post
Super Jamie Posted July 29, 2009 The two pictures are taken by moving the camera (or player, in this case) slightly to the side for the second shot. The idea being to take the pictures how each of your eyes would see them individually. You then cross your eyes and make the two pictures converge, if you mess around with your eye focus enough, your brain will take the two left/right pictures and give them depth perception. I would describe the muscular focus feeling as like looking at a Magic Eye stereogram, but in reverse. You are supposed to see E1M1 as if you were really standing there. Receding floor, pillars in front of other pillars, wall at the back, passage to the side, etc. Try cropping one pair of pictures out and viewing it centred on a black background with nothing else to distract your eyes, that might make it easier. The first pair without the monsters is probably easiest to see. The weapons don't converge when looking at the rest of the room, so don't focus on them. Try look at the gibs or pillars or blue carpet. 0 Share this post Link to post
Creaphis Posted July 29, 2009 This is very cool, and there is no reason why a stereoscopic Doom port couldn't be coded. I don't know how long I can coax my eyes into holding that sort of focus, but I'll cross my eyes as long as I have to to kill imps in THREE DEE! Somebody make this! *Creaphis is happy to be in the 50% of Doomworlders who can find their way around a Magic Eye picture* 0 Share this post Link to post
Butts Posted July 29, 2009 Damn. I can't do it. Oh well, my eyes fail. 0 Share this post Link to post
Super Jamie Posted July 29, 2009 Good call, Creaphis. Finally, a use for my 1920x1200 pixel monitor besides porn! 0 Share this post Link to post
Creaphis Posted July 29, 2009 It never even occurred to me before that stereoscopic images could change in real time, in response to user input, but now it seems like a great and obvious idea. I can't fathom why the porn industry hasn't thought of this already. 0 Share this post Link to post
Super Jamie Posted July 29, 2009 Actually, Butts, Google "stereoscopic porn". There's heaps of it around. Maybe that will encourage your eyes to co-operate :P 0 Share this post Link to post

Butts Posted July 29, 2009 Lol stereoscopic porn. Maybe I can train my eyes to not suck balls with that!!! 0 Share this post Link to post
Creaphis Posted July 29, 2009 Super Jamie said:It doesn't seem to work as well as one would think: http://www.stereoeye.jp/3dmovie/index_e.html Hm. I watched the video with the deer, and the problem is that the two video streams are transposed. What's on the right should be on the left, and vice versa, and to appreciate this video in its current form you would have to look outwards with both your eyes instead of crossing them inwards. For a moment I considered that this may be the preferred method to enjoy a stereoscopic image in Japan, but focusing your eyes away from each other is extremely difficult to do, so I think this is just an error. Butts: It's very hard to teach someone to focus on these pictures correctly, but I will say that it's easier to learn on traditional Magic Eye pictures, as they don't demand that you cross your eyes so far to see the intended image. 0 Share this post Link to post
