random monster and item placement in zdoom/gzdoom

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for suggestions on ways this can be done. While completely random monsters can be archived pretty easily with DECORATE, I'd like to have control over how many of what kind of monster appears.

For example; how about a scenario where no more and no less then 5 barrons appear at different random spawn points on a map? Or maybe an area where 1 hell knight or 5 imps could appear? Or some situations where no monsters appear at all, but with checks that ensure that at least 30 monsters appear on that map.

also random respawing after a time that checks to see if all the monsters in a given area are dead and that the player is not present to see it happen.

I guess I'm thinking sort of a simplified AI director from left 4 dead. I'm sure this could be scripted with ACS.

Has anyone done anything like I've described? It sounds like something someone would have attempted. There's slige/oblige I guess, but I'd rather play a map that was carefully crafted by human hands. It's always much more interesting, and allows the use of custom monsters.

I made a script like this myself. What it does is spawn a random monster (cacodemon, hell knight, revenant, or mancubus) at one of 6 locations on the map every minute. It's a fairly simple script, kinda long though. If you want to see it, it's on map 10 of my experimental legacy WAD.

Indeed. You'll want to place plenty of map spots, and make use of the many spawn functions.
