How long have you been coming to DoomWorld?

Recommended Posts

I used to lurk around doomworld.com purely to look at the screenshots from the /newstuffs. At the time I didn't even know doomworld had a forum and I also didn't know how to run PWADs. (I didn't know it was the .WAD file that holds all the data that doom runs on)

But yeah I played a lot of Doom 2 and Final Doom, and peeked at those screenshots once in a while to see the awesome visuals doomers were creating and how I wished i could immerse myself in those worlds. Later I found out how to run wads and began playing all the common megawads.

I'm spoiled now that I've gotten into mapping, and understand doom's architecture and know everything maps are capable of.

I remember:

  • post hell being green, probably because it was a ripoff of the something awful gas chamber.
  • reading the massive 9/11 thread.
  • lüt 'dying' and responsible for something like %10 of doomworlds traffic
  • ling retiring and posting titties.
  • Doomboy. Please come back Doomboy! ^_^
  • acha-acha-acha-action doom!
  • Newdoom being hacked

Man, I remember all that stuff. Yeah, Post Hell was green. There's an avatar in the default avatars of a green cacodemon which Lutarez made as a "Post Helled cacodemon".

That 9/11 thread was the biggest thread on the site for the longest time. We thought nothing would get bigger than that. Then it got bypassed by the 'heh' thread and eventually the 'what are you listening to?' thread. It's kind of weird because I only postedfor a couple months after I registered then stopped after the Nisqually earthquake, then I came back months later and 9/11 happened soon after.

That Lüt dying thing was kind of hilarious. THat's one of the reasons he was eventually banned, IIRC. Him being responsible for 10% of the site's traffic was also lol. I remember when Ling ran his original post on that through some sort of translator that added unnecessary cursing to it or something. I think it remains in the archives in that form.

Ling's retirement, lol. By posting titties do you mean where he made the "pick your favorite woman" app that got DW a record number of hits, or do you mean the thread that people just filled with porn? I also remember me, Baldy, and Assmaster finding linguica at Uajimaya, which was kind of lol.

I have a few to add myself...

  • The old, old forums with the shitty tiered structure that old forum software used to have.
  • Esco and his rampaging ebonics.
  • Dashiva and his million alts.
  • Lüt getting banned, and the Exodus.
  • deadnail and his gun rants that put BBG to shame. Also, never capitalize the d!
  • darknation's phallic comics.
  • The terrible nanami/hyena/hobo comics that were rival to dn's.
  • Doomworld Jeopardy and the Polls forum.
Man, I could just keep going on. I actually remember logging on to Doomworld after finishing my work in my html class in high school. I've been here forever.

I've been lurking since 2002, though apart from the /newstuff threads I spent relatively little time in the forums before registering.

I've been lurking since 2006 or 2007, mainly to check out /newstuff every week or so.

I went on the Internet for the first time some 14 years ago, but Doom was not one of my priorities when surfing ( I was still getting on with my Doomania CD).

Later on (1998) I first found Lee Killough's pages, and later (2000), almost by chance, an early version of Doomworld but I never bothered with any forum until 2004. I registered in 2006 after I saw how fun it could be ;-)

I remember going to my local cyber cafe back then, paying £5.50 an hour to download as much Doom stuff that me and my friend could get hold of.

Ouch that was expensive or what? It was an outrageous amount back then, with the currency exchange rates of the time, and it would be pretty bad even today.

(such a pain in the arse when you got home and one of the disks was corrupted... used to feel like such a waste of time and dissapointment!).

I only started getting frequent "unreadable floppy" or even "unformatted floppy" errors after Y2K. I've never found a comprehensive explanation as to why this happened, so I blame it on a combination of increasingly cheap and flimsy media (you just can't find good quality floppies like e.g. Verbatim's Datalife with Teflon coating anymore) and an increase in proliferation of magnetic devices (mobile phones, headphones for mp3 players etc.).

My registration date is Dec 2000 so I must have lurked for a couple of years. O_O Mind you, I'm not sure that the forums are as old as the site.

Yeah, are you sure you didn't post on the old forums? And you might also have posted on the news comments system (example) that was put up as the first means for users to post, and later worked along with the old forums when they were opened. My '02 join date is misleading in this respect, for instance, as I started posting sometime in '99. There was a period where I didn't have a Doomworld account, and just hung about some IRC channels.

I am quite young to these forums but I have been around for quite some time. I never really cared about forums before though, I just used DoomWorld to get new maps/mods for Doom 95.

I don't think I've been here very long. I am not really a DOOM fanatic like some of y'all :) though it is one of the games I prefer playing over virtually anything that's come out over the last 10 years. The most recent FPS I enjoyed was Quake II...all FPS games after that have been boring as hell and not worth paying any attention to.

I lurked for about two years before signing up for this site, when I wanted to join the Community Chest II project.

This place has kind of become like an old bar, where you forgot why you started coming but still show up for happy hour.

I started following the Doomworld news section at some point in 1998, the Gothic DM II review being one of the first things I recall reading at the site. I didn't really even notice the forums until (I think) 2001 when I started lurking here. In mid-2002 I finally registered and I've been scarcely posting here ever since.

I'm sure I've been lurking for quite a while. My account was registered in '04 I think, and that was to post about one of Scuba's many "advertise Action Doom!" events. Either way I've always poked my head in over here every so often or when I've heard about something big going on (although somehow Action Doom 2 slipped under my radar until relatively recently).

Been lurking the Doom communities a while before that, though most of my "contributions" have been to NewDoom. I registered there in '03, and by the time Phoebus shafted everyone earlier this year, I had over 6,200 posts and was the fourth or fifth with the most posts (although that probably wouldn't have been the case if it hadn't been for the big Hack, since a lot of people already had that many posts beforehand).

Still, it was a good run.

Someone mentioned Doom Center. I remember that site, if that means anything.

To be honest I didn't start really getting into Doom until fairly recently, mostly when I started mapping and gained a better appreciation for the engine and what it can do. I joined NewDoom for some Legacy support, and stayed for the lulz pretty much (ND was one of the first sites I did join, though). I've always liked the game (and of course have been playing it since it came out), but I haven't always been that obsessed with it.

Back in the day, I was registered to Doomworld, Newdoom, and Doomcenter. I'd spend half the day just circulating between those sites posting. I ended up spending the most time on DW because Newdoom never seemed to have any worthy conversations and Doomcenter never seemed to have any conversations whatsoever. :P

    Yup.

Hah, that's the guy. He was a nice enough person but you couldn't ever understand him and he refused to write in normal English.

Also, looking at the very first forums is pretty hilarious. You see the names of a bunch of old and respected community members, but they're all acting like children. Then you realize that they pretty much were at that point.

I remember having a moan at cocoon in a 10sectors news article (pre forums?),immediately feeling bad about it and apologising by email.

I didn't post much back then. Too busy reading Sir Robins reviews in my lunch break.

I occasionally lurked Doomworld and the forums when I was in the seventh grade using the school computer lab (so like around 1999), then eventually I joined in October of 2001 when I was fourteen.

That caco is still around, huh?

As for me, I've been around since March 2001 although this account states otherwise. Just the result of not knowing back then that user names can be changed (and I'm contemplating on another name). I'm usually busy with college, and thus my activity here has diminished quite a bit rendering me in a lurker status...excluding this post.

    Ok, enough excuses.

And I can name a few more you excluded from that list, Dan. That giant haiku nightmare of a thread to name one.

I found out that yahoo search works well with the old forums. (doomworld.com/forums)
I found this thread where AndrewB asked which videocard to buy a tnt2 or a voodoo3.
    http://www.doomworld.com/forums/general/messages/10639.shtml
My username was nox then. So I was an active poster since 00 or 99. (I believe I also used noces1001 but I'm not sure).

    edit some nostalgia
    Hell Shores Await. :-)
And the same thread but in a different tone (accurate of that period)

Oh hey, haven't seen you around in a while. Good to know you're going to college now. Also, looking at the default avatar pages it appears they're broken and you can only get to the first and last pages of it. Yours must be lost on page 2 or 3.

I think that haiku thing happened during my first hiatus, so I missed most of it. I do remember people just randomly busting out haikus in other threads though.

Ah, I see what's happening. The requested page number is being appended to the initial value instead of replacing the value. Just correct it in the address bar.
