Permanent freelook

how do I turn on freelook so it's permanent and i don't have to always hold down a key

If you're using zdoom or similar, turn on 'always mouselook' in mouse options.

btw, is it possible to always mouselook in Quake? (the original exe, I guess it's vanilla quake?)

Go to wherever you've installed Quake and open up the ID1 folder. Inside there, you should see a file called autoexec.cfg. If it doesn't exist, just create a new text file named autoexec.cfg. Inside this text file type "+mlook" (without the quotes). Save it, close it, and start Quake. Automatic mouselook!

I forgot how I did freelook in quake back in the day. So I just +mlook in console whenever I started up.

I didn't use look up/down very often in the 90's and didn't use a mouse, but the past couple years I've been holding right mouse button for freelook and using it a lot.

put +mlook in your autoexec.cfg works a treat, and put anything else here you want to load too, like fov 140.
