AV and ZDoom...

Recommended Posts

I'm having a strange problem with ZDoom when running AV. When I saved first time round, on level 6 I think, I got the list I had so far;

sub_lev
TNT
-empty slot-
-empty slot-
-empty slot-
-empty slot-
-empty slot-
-empty slot-

so I typed AV in the third slot and left. Anyway, I went back later and there's nothing in the list. I shrugged it off, and played through level 7, then saved it again.

So I come back later and F3 and now the original list is there, with sub_lev, TNT, and now AV! So I played on through level 7, and saved at the end of 13.

Now guess what. I've just loaded up again, hit F3, and I get this;

AV
-empty slot-
-empty slot-
-empty slot-
-empty slot-
-empty slot-
-empty slot-
-empty slot-

It's at the end of level 7! This is drving me nuts, I tried to find out where ZDoom writes to when it creates savegames but I couldn't see it in the cfg file or anywhere else, please help.

Also, does anyone know if you can change the address ZDoom saves screenshots in? It currently defaults to c:, and I want them put in my ZDoom folder. Thanx.

This sounds like the kind of problems people were having with some of the earlier betas of zdoom 1.23 after they moved from 1.22. Newer Zdoom betas do not use "slots" as such. You can save many games, the names of which are shown in the file dialogues, as well as snapshots of the game where you saved. Early versions of this had a few problems, but it is all ironed out now.

Make sure you have the latest beta:

http://zdoom.notgod.com/ftp/123beta28a.zip

An do a clean install, or at least delete your old 1.22 config file. 1.23 uses an ini file, but the old cfg, if it is present, was reported to confuse the issue. Mind you, if there should be an even newer beta out soon according to Randy Heit.

It is worth pointing out there are a few problems with AV and Zdoom. See the following Zdoom forum thread for a full discussion of these issues:

thanks, enjay.

I didn't even know the 1.23 beta had been released.

It looks cool, even more options as well :)

I don't remember being able to set message colour before!

Just this map30 problem now, guess I'll have to go get DeepSea and sort it out myself!! ;)

Yeah. there's only been 29 betas versions of 1.23 released during the past year.. it's easy to miss that.. Specially this whole slopes thing.. I mean.. it don't exactly attract any audience.

latest beta of 1.23 is 28b

sorry, EDIT, the latest beta.

Now I'm having more problems. Everything works until I try and drag 'n' drop a pwad over ZDoom.exe.

I then get the following;

This never happened before. It loads up happily on it's own, though. Please help! I am AV-deprived, now...

Yeah, the dragging and dropping of WADs has been broken for a while. You'll have to use the command line. It doesn't bother me as I always start Zdoom from a command prompt anyway.

It is maybe worth popping along to http://www.fmod.org/ and getting a new copy of fmod.dll. The version in the Zdoom zip has a problem that can cause an occasional, random crash, and other problems too if you are unlucky enough to have a system sensitive to it.

The latest intentionally public beta is (AFAIK) 28a, but if you were one of those people who took advantage of the brief period where there were no hidden directories on the Zdoom ftp, you may well have beta 28b, or even c. This should become irrelevant soon because Randy has a couple of issues to sort out and...(cue Randy)

Once I do those two things, beta 576—err, 29—should be ready for release. I can't think of anything else I want to do for 1.23, so provided there are no serious bugs with it, I'll just need to write some updated documentation before I rename it to something non-beta.

Yes, I thought it might be the .dll

I've had a few crashes, now.

I'm gonna stick with v1.22 for now, or maybe one of the earlier 1.23 betas, we'll see.
