What are your favorite music groups?

Recommended Posts

With all of the top 10 threads we have been seeing lately, I'd figure throw another one out there. Your list doesn't have to be 10, and you can list some bands and artists you hate too... ;)

In no particular order:

Rammstein
Nine Inch Nails
Oomph!
The Beatles (Or any of their solo work)
Marilyn Manson
White Zombie
Korn
The Rolling Stones
Filter
AC/DC
Metallica
Depeche Mode

I hate:
Any modern day "Disney pop" (i.e. Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, etc).

I think it would be easier just to say that I like progressive rock, and then provide a list of bands that are NOT progressive rock.

Pink Floyd
Tool
Led Zeppelin
Radiohead
Coheed & Cambria
Mastodon

You must be one of those people that think "progressive rock" is a term used to describe bands that have a keyboard player and are capable of playing odd time signatures, rather than the proper term used to describe bands that actually, you know, progressed the genre further.

Pink Floyd isn't a progressive rock band? So being a pioneering and incredibly influential rock band that is still emulated to this very day is not progressive in any sense?

With all the top-ten threads we've been having lately, I figured I'd start ranting on about how intellectually lazy people make endless top-ten lists.

Pink Floyd

Post Syd Barrett Pink Floyd is considered progressive rock.

I suppose the two most influential bands for me would be Family and Stealers Wheel.

Favorites:

Pink Floyd
Wolfmother
Led Zeppelin
The Eagles of Death Metal (not a metal band)
Joe Walsh
Jefferson Airplane
John Coltrane
George Gershwin

Pretty much any psychadellic/stoner rock/jazz. I used to listen to punk, but now I see it as very angry music and don't care for it anymore.

No love for Rush?

Although I'll step even further out and say that 1980-1991 produced their best works. Signals is my favorite record of all time.

Hahaha...

Seriously, I have personal reasons to hate Led Zeppelin, Doors, and Pink Floyd.
When I was a child, my older brothers were all day out listening those bands, but they had only one cd of each. Do you know what is listening everyday the same songs on loud volume? Listening Another Break in the Wall or Whole Lotta Love five or six times a day? Seriously, thats a torture!

Well it's understandable you'd detest Pink Floyd from hearing The Wall day in and day out, considering it's a terrible (or at best, terribly boring) album, and marked the sharp decline in the musical quality of Pink Floyd's output since.

Well, I sure as hell don't define it as "any old band capable of playing in 5/4".

Pink Floyd isn't a progressive rock band? So being a pioneering and incredibly influential rock band that is still emulated to this very day is not progressive in any sense?

New sounds are a characteristic of music in general. In that sense, Pink Floyd isn't prog rock any more than Grandmaster Flash is. However, two of the defining characteristics of prog are the incorporation of divergent musical styles and tightly composed extended pieces. What style does Floyd do except psychadelic blues? What has Floyd composed besides extended guitar solos?

Floyd is a good band. Not great, but good. And certainly not prog.

My avatar is my favorite Floyd album, but I kinda have to agree about the Wall. The musical pieces are lacking in the psychedellic sound I loved from Dark Side of the Moon. However, I still think that it's a brilliant album, because I still can enjoy listening to the story of Pink. I've not honestly heard an album that can tell a story as well as the Wall.
