Underwater critters!

Recommended Posts

Umm, I don't know if this has been brought up before (if so, please bear over with me), but like the topic says, I think Doom 3 needs some underwater demons. Preferably some which swim fast as Hell so that the only safe way to dispose of 'em is from above the water surface. This is one case where I wouldn't mind if the developers cheated and gave them a "smell-player" AI, which means that they would know that you have entered the water even though they haven't seen him/her yet.

Yeah, that would be cool, except that I don't want the underwater demons looking like cheap fish experiments, i.e. the rotfish and shark barracudas. They need to look like some version of a demon that we haven't seen before, one that wasn't actually designed specifically to live in water (do they HAVE water in Hell?), but can survive in it just the same. There should also then be some type of behemoth demon which resides in the water, one that makes you piss your pants when you see it's humongous size.

(do they HAVE water in Hell?)

Yes I've seen some water "floor" textures in the Hell levels of at least the first Doom game - heh, water in Hell should be hot, ranging from just acceptable to boiling (boiling water'll hurt you).

And Hell needs water to freak out souls who are afraid of water - remember, Hell has something for everyone.

I agree with you in regards to the form of the critter - no more fish. I once thought of a sort of squid/octopus demon, but I've seen that in the Hexen 2 demo, so I don't know...

Hmmm, maybe imps are good swimmers?

I just thought of something. What if there were an ENTIRE hell city underwater? The demons there could all be aquatic, not that they would look like fish, but they would have certain traits that are characterstic to marine life. Possibly similar to the McFarlane Toys 'Deep Sea Creature'. That was damn awesome...

Hmmm, it just occurred to me that the cacodemon could be an underwater breathing demon as well as an air-demon. One thing's fer sure: Lost souls certainly wont thrive underwater - *sizzle* poooff*!

There's water in Doom - you just can't swim in it.
Water and the ability to swim has been in every Id FPS since (and including) Quake1, so I can't see why Id wont put it in "Doom 3".
I'll leave it to Id to decide for themselves what sort of a creature should roam what waters "Doom 3" has, but discussing the possibilities is always fun.

I can get to work on drawing an aquatic demon, I'll post it on my website. In the meen-time visit what I do have on my site

http://www.geocities.com/KingKillofthe666/Massacre_Comics.html

The Doom section has only a few monsters, I haven't updated the site for months.

Cool site...except for the fact that I couldn't enlarge some of the more *achem* unique images...

Dude, porn is prohibited on Geocities...

So I suppose this site with a lot of scanned adult comics I keep visiting is forbidden... ^_^

As for underwater creatures. Well, dunno, maybe we could get all/some of the flying creatures to attack underwater, not to say a couple of the ground based too. Alien 4 was crappy, but that scene with the swimming aliens rock. I could picture a stilized Imp doing that kind of stuff.

So far one of the scriest enemies I've seen would be the Ickthyosaur from Half Life. It didn't look too creepy one you got a good look at it, and it's animations (and code) sucked, but it can be very dangerous, and it's faster than you. I think it would be neat to have an aquatic/fish-like enemy, as long as the water looks like water (darker as you go deeper). I also really like the idea of a creature so huge that as you are swimming you see it's mouth apear along side you... twice as long as you are.

Are you refering to the Doom Comic? You are right; no non-adult should EVER have to suffer the torment of reading that!

Okay, sue me, but I think H.R. Giger could do some KILLER designs for either the Doom creatures or environments...

I've always found underwater enemies in FPS's to be a bit retarded, either due to player movement/creature movement problems in respect to the other, or being affected by the underwater parameters.

It is a great opportunity to change this. Rather than see specific underwater enemies, I'd like to see the regular game characters 'adapted' so they can be underwater, either wearing equipment or having been genetically modified, if you'll excuse the phrase, for the task.

It'd also be cool that you would be able to knock or blast an enemy into the water, and if it's not adapted for water it drowns in a similar time to your own air_supply_fail time.

AI could be used so that monsters can detect when they are running out of air and quit following you, turn back, go up for air, like you would. For me, that would own.

HERETIC!!!
j/k
Seriously, Demons wearing underwater equipment??? Doom 2's cybernetic horrors were bad enough, but now we get scuba demons? The only type of enemy I could accept with this would be the former humans, nuff said.

The underwater environ is one of the frekiest things for me in FPSs...I guess I don't like to be attacked while holding my breath. The Icthyosaur in HL was pretty damn creepy...but I remember I swam around with the one in USS Darkstar for about a minute before it attacked me. Dumbass.

Anyways, in Doom 3, it would be cool to see some kind of demon with a tail adapted for swimming. Also, Leviathan would make a cool boss. Hehehe...

I know! How about...NO SWIMMING! I mean, is there some kind of un-written law that says that EVERY FPS has to have swimming? I mean, it's Hell we're talking about here, for christ's sake...

But if they are demons from hell, why in the hell would they need to breath underwater? I mean, whats the point in beign a hellspawn with ungodly powers if you can fucking drown?

actually he has a pont, I mean an imp could walk on molten lava for as long as it liked and not get hurt, but it couln't take as many bullets as Doomguy.

I dunno, I'd just like to see 'em drown, some sorta revenge for running outa air more times than being shot dead in fps's, bah

Actually MACVILE_WHORE's post made me realize just how lame my topic here really is.
RtCW had no underwater critters and you didn't swim about a whole lot - yet the game's awesome.
It's just that I used to think that underwater horrors were a must in modern shooters - and I've also noticed several people on different forums posting that underwater monsters freak them out, bingo!

But MAC's got a point - demons have weird powers, though I wouldn't mind if former humans can drown and/or be hurt by lava/acid/slime/boiling blood.

Uh, it isn't very likely that the whole game is going to be set in hell, is it? We don't even know if ANY of the game will be set in hell.

It'd be seriously lame if we aren't given a chance to revisit Hell in this new incarnation of Doom.
I also doubt that Id would neglect Hell in this game, seeing as most of their other games have Hell-like themes in them (Spear of Destiny had Hell in the end, Quake1 is very Hell-like and Q3A has a few Hellish maps too).

And let's not forget: Doom is ABOUT Hell!

Personally, I hope Doom 3 will take us on a horrid journey through places inlcuding a space vessel, space port/military complex, planetary surface (some OTHER planet than Earth), and, of course, Hell itself. With the graphics capabilities of the new engine, I'm sure Hell would be a truly horrific rendering...

Paul Jaquays has already hinted that the game'll take place on Mars.
Mars could indicate the original gateways, which lead to Hell.
