Gamer Guy thead

Recommended Posts

Yes, I am guy who plays games. Don't hit on me, you silly girls.

This thread is for gamer guys the forum over. What games do you play? How do you explain your hobby to other guys? Any stories of Testosteronism in the videogaming scene?

I'll tell a story: One time I was at Anime Boston, playing some Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Suddenly, a girl walks up to me and sneers "Oh, you're a gamer? Could I get you to dress up as Mario for me?". I was deeply offended. She obviously thought I was out of my league, as SSBB doesn't feature blood and guts. Gee honey, my tiny male brain obviously can't handle anything that isn't coated in chainsaws and skulls.

Maybe she was offering you a retarded, girl version of a cosplay sex game?

EDIT: as far as testoesterone moments go, the moment I unlocked the Eurofighter Typhoon in HAWX (after having to beat most of the frakking game to get it) was worthy of some rock music.

Or she just expected everyone at an anime con to be cosplayers. Don't read too much into it.

Uhh, I play different kinds of games. Doom, NES games, random stuff on the DS, random RPGs every now and then, Melty Blood (an obscure Japanese PC/PS2/arcade fighting game), hack 'n slash games, etc. I mostly play games when I've got nothing better to do, so I don't know if I'd really call it a hobby rather than a way to pass time. Except when I was in Tokyo, then I turned playing Melty Blood in the arcades into a short-lived hobby since I couldn't play it in an arcade at home.

Also, I don't see why I should be explaining anything to anyone.

Other than Doom (as far as massive online blood-frag-fests go is Skulltag for me), I play on my PS3 (which i'm currently using more for my old PS1 and PS2 games at the moment), N64, SNES (Got this more recently, starting to build my collection for this), Gamecube and XBOX (original). Some of my favorite game series are Gran Turismo, Punch-Out, Ridge Racer, Tekken, F-Zero, Metroid, Tony Hawk, Sonic, Burnout, Mario Kart, and Mother. In most cases of these series, I find the earlier games better (in Sonic's case, I refuse to touch the new games with a bargepole).

Where I live I'm laughed at for being a "retro gamer" and "being backwards", but when they consider themselves hardcore by playing nothing but online COD:MW2 (or gimmicky wii/ds games for most girls), I just laugh back.

I play just about anything thats out there, from blast-in the past NES to now Wii.
BUT! I refuse XBox with an undying hate.
CoD sucks to me, too much "realism" is what they aimed and the series itself is a shitfest... Same reaction to Gay-lo (Halo) series
Main games that leave me in interest is Kingdom Hearts, Mario Kart, Starfox, Zelda... I have almost all KH games, almost all Zeldas and have all Mario Karts.. But main collection is Nintendo.

Well maybe you shouldn't act so gay

I thought that was something you only said to me. I feel so cheap!

Alright, care to escort me to the nearest giant ring planet thing so we can fight off the alien swarm? You know... since Halo is so realistic and all.

you should've kicked her ass in flower, that'd show her who's girlier.

like any self respecting pc gamer i return to civilization every now and then, although my preferred mutation is alpha centauri. the drones need me, they look up to me, you know? my stress relief game is tyrian and i'd probably never reach this community if dark forces had multiplayer mode. currently playing: exile 2.

the manliest moment of my gaming career was probably the night spent drinking whisky and playing house of the dead: overkill with my friend. there's no way a girl would find that fun, it was the gaming equivalent of buying a chainsaw.

I know some girls who would definitely find that fun. They are few, but I have met them. :D

Most girls must hate talking about games near me though. If they like games they usually seem to like those things the Japanese call RPGs. That often sets me on a rant. Those aren't RPGs.

I play D&D 2-3 times a week. Half of my group is girls, why would they make fun of me for playing it?

Oh, you mean that kind of gaming...

I also just play the FPS' of the past. I also play all my favorite titles on emulators. I'm no longer on the gaming scene.

Besides, "gamer" is just a buzzword made-up to make kids (who are now a majority) that play video games feel proactive.

Agreed.

I hate when people can determine that I am a "gamer" because I play doom so much. I honestly don't really enjoy anything else save for Contra, Streets of Rage, and House of the Dead.

I'm not much of a topic starter, I usually just contribute to conversations, and thus Doom or video games in general will almost never come up unless someone spots my doom tattoo and asks about it.

Agreed. I find most video games suck and are rehashes or a game that's already been done one hundred times with new graphics. I hate consoles past the Playstation. I probably find a game I really like every four years or so. Like Half-Life 2, or Left 4 Dead. That's really about it.

I don't really have much free time for games lately so the little bit goes to playing some Doom.

I wonder how many people here understood this thread's intentions,

I'm still scratching my head...

As for games I play, I took a long break from any sort of real gaming for about two years. No real reason why. But recently I decided to play through Half-Life 2 and Portal again, as well as go back and play my older FPS games. I also still play a lot of DDR. Explaining that I play FPS games to other guys isn't a problem, but explaining DDR has always been a bit difficult...

I've also been itching to break out my NeoGeo and play some good ol' fashioned 2d fighting games. 3d fighters generally suck eggs.

I dreamt last night I was having a conversation in person with a doomer from this website. I guess it was a chance meeting. The point of the dream was, oddly as it might seem, is that I didn't feel awkward talking about doom with another doomer. Believe it or not, I would feel awkward meeting with another doomer to talk about doom, yet I enjoy it on the forums. I think this is because most everyone in my life frowns upon anything more than a casual interest in doom for a hot minute back in 1995 when the game was new. I guess I'm so used to getting at best indifferent responses from people when I tell them I like the original doom that I feel sheepish talking about it in real life.

Yeah I'm not sure what this is about. I was watching some youtube videos of Street Fighter 2 and it looked like a blast. Then I watched some videos of Tekken 4, later Mortal Kombats, and Street Fighter 4. I'm not really sure what it is but they just don't look as fun.

I wonder if it has something to do with two dimensions and sprites with limited frames being more 'defined' where as three dimensions looks like you have less control of what can happen on the screen.

That might be, yeah. 2d places many more restrictions on you, but it also opens itself up to more depth. It's sorta like an exercise in minimalism.

I've always found 3d fighters to be too easy to beat. I remember buying DoA3 and getting through the whole game in 30 minutes. I could get through Arcade Mode in Soul Caliber on Ultra Hard within 12 minutes with Taki back in the day. But I have yet to beat Fatal Fury Special on normal mode. So for me, 2d fighters are also much more of a challenge.
