We get gun crimes and violent murders even in Greece where weapon owning is strictly regulated. Then again, most of the perpetrators are either:

• Albanian and Russian mobsters, who don't give two shits about the law and have been known to execute contract hits with as low as Eur. 500, and no sane police officer would ever dare arrest one personally.
  
• Cretans, since Crete has a de-facto impunity regime on weapon ownership (and the police is either too scared or has ties with most of the clans, to enforce the law).
  

The only ones who are fucked are normal citizens who aren't Albanians or Cretans and don't own guns, but will be duly fucked by the police for much lesser infractions or for carrying a box cutter in the wrong place.

Oh i wish there was a way to communicate to medias worldwide that this kind of exposure may well be one of the reasons they do it.

If persons committing atrocious acts like this, risked extreme public ridicule post mortem, maybe they´d just quietly go hang themselves in the woods or something instead.

Shootings in the UK must be very rare if they had to shut down a power plant, talk about being overly paranoid. If that happened in North America, we'd be constantly without power.

The UK already has the tightest gun laws in Europe (perhaps with some piddling exception that someone will probably look up), and possibly the world (maybe Singapore is tougher?). Gun ownership is low and there is no gun lobby with any sort of high profile. Armed crime is relatively rare - regular police don't even carry guns, and will call for armed back-up in cases where they are dealing with armed criminals/suspects. The 2012 Olympics need special dispensation, as the shooting events would be illegal in England otherwise.

Events like this are very rare in the UK. But clearly someone who is suitably minded can get a hold of guns, legally or illegally, and go on a rampage like this.

See, had this have been a (black or asian particularly) teenager in a shithole part of London this would have been largely overlooked as what happens. However, this is in the north, where Hot Fuzz's rule about people in the countryside (everybody and their mum is packing round here) is one of those half-jokes, because the gun would never get used past keeping wildlife away... except it did. Not a lot to be done here really - and on a plus side, at least I now know where Cumbria actually is (not too far north of my current location).
