Jimmy Posted September 24, 2010 In light of the recent thread by Dee, who put forth a really good idea as to how to fill a certain void in the Doom community (a place for uploading incomplete mods), let me venture an idea of my own, which I hope would be equally beneficial for the community. My idea is the Doom Musicians Guild (or DMG) - a public forum specifically centered around creating new music, MIDI or non-MIDI, for mappers and modders in urgent need of tracks tailored to their needs. The Guild itself would be comprised of the most able composers in the Doom community, with regular users being able to make song requests for the composers in the Guild to take up. I've thought about this at length, and decided that there would be three key areas of this new website/forum/whatever. Works: This would be the place for artists to upload new or old works for people to view and download. Artists could also list all of the work they've done so far, like a sort of résumé, here. (Many MIDI artists on this forum, including myself, stewboy and Fisk have already done this.) Each artist would have his own online file space (folder? box? portfolio?) for all the works he has uploaded, which could then be browsed at the leisure of regular users. Requests: A section where a request can be made by mappers or modders in need of a new track or two for their project. Having the request system as a public forum sort of thing (very much like this site's /newstuff database) would save those people having to ask individuals through PM to compose new tracks for them - any available artists would simply "claim" the requests and then upload them to the "Works" area under their file folder. Events: A section for composers to take part in scheduled events, like SpeedMIDIing - which I hope to make monthly if this idea takes off and the Guild gains enough members.I have a forum under construction at the moment, and I'll happily invite some people along to it - that is, if this seems to be a good idea. Any input would be appreciated. :P 0 Share this post Link to post
myk Posted September 24, 2010 Sounds good, but I think it should be something like the WIP site except by author, instead of a forum. Each author has his page or section with information and links, publicly viewable comments are made there, and people can also send private messages (perhaps emails.) 0 Share this post Link to post
40oz Posted September 24, 2010 Nice. You can only use so many video game midis before they start to get dried out. I know there are some good musicians here but I only know a few of them by name. 0 Share this post Link to post
PRIMEVAL Posted September 24, 2010 Sounds good to me. This is something I can use. :) 0 Share this post Link to post
DeathevokatioN Posted September 24, 2010 Great great great great idea! 0 Share this post Link to post
Jimmy Posted September 24, 2010 Still working on the forum at the moment. Will post the link when everything's ready. :D myk said:Sounds good, but I think it should be something like the WIP site except by author, instead of a forum. If I devote a section of the forums specifically for composers' pages, or résumés, then that will all be taken care of. :) 0 Share this post Link to post
stewboy Posted September 24, 2010 I suggested something like this ages ago :( But I still think it's a good idea! 0 Share this post Link to post
scalliano Posted September 24, 2010 This seems like a very good idea, particularly if it's not restricted to MIDI only - I could probably contribute some stuff myself. 0 Share this post Link to post
Jimmy Posted September 25, 2010 Alright, everything seems to be ready. http://jimmy.phenomer.net/forums/index.php Let me know if there's anything immediately wrong. :P 0 Share this post Link to post
Abyssalstudios1 Posted September 25, 2010 This is awesome, and just what we needed. I'll be sure to ask you guys for favors in the future! 0 Share this post Link to post
darkreaver Posted September 25, 2010 Very nice. I think I`ll post a request pretty soon actually :P 0 Share this post Link to post
Chrispaks Posted September 25, 2010 As a musician for many many years and MIDI synth creator, I'd really enjoy to make music for doom levels. I make my own music through guitar pro and then translate them by playing them out for my albums. Since guitar pro is MIDI capable, it'd make it very easy for me to create MIDI's. I recommend this program to others who play piano (or guitar), great for making doom midi's ;) ... or at least for me anyways. 0 Share this post Link to post
Jimmy Posted September 25, 2010 stewboy said:Shouldn't we have to register? Yes, if you wish to become part of the Guild - although for those of you who I know make good MIDIs, you'll be accepted upon registration. :) It would also be good if you could post a résumé of your work (newcomers would have to post one of these to get into the Guild), just so that all of our work is in one easy-to-find place. ;) 0 Share this post Link to post
stewboy Posted September 25, 2010 I was more concerned about not having to register to post - I'm worrying that it could invite spambots, trolls, etc. 0 Share this post Link to post
Jimmy Posted September 25, 2010 Yes, perhaps... but I think guests should still have the ability to make requests. 0 Share this post Link to post
stewboy Posted September 25, 2010 Welp, I think you're probably right. Edit: Gah why can't we EDIT OUR POSTS there 0 Share this post Link to post
Jimmy Posted September 25, 2010 Oh dear - that seems to be an issue with the forum style. :| The prosilver style does include an edit button, but I'd really much rather the forum have a unique style. I'll keep looking for some good ones that do include an edit button. Sorry about that. :/ 0 Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted September 25, 2010 I can't imagine that adding a button to a style is that difficult; not when you can compare your custom style with one where it works. Presumably there are already buttons for things like "quote" and "report" and so on after all. 0 Share this post Link to post
Jimmy Posted September 25, 2010 Indeed - there are information, delete and report buttons, but no sign of a quote or edit button on any of the three styles I've installed on this forum. :/ Prosilver is the only style that does have "quote" and "edit" button, so it's not an error with the permissions or anything like that. 0 Share this post Link to post
stewboy Posted September 26, 2010 So Jimmy, are you going to post this on other major Doom sites? 0 Share this post Link to post
Jimmy Posted September 26, 2010 I think I might, in order to get a bigger userbase, but it entirely depends on how accepting those forums are of me posting links to other forums. :P It should be alright, though, as the DMG forum is specialised for musical discussion only. Anyway, I'll do that soon. :) 0 Share this post Link to post
Jimmy Posted September 26, 2010 Not entirely sure how, but the quote and edit buttons are now there, for all three custom styles. At least, for me. :P I'd also like to inform everyone (who hasn't seen the new SpeedMIDI section) that a SpeedMIDIing session will be taking place this Friday (midnight GMT+1) and will last for 24 hours. :) GET SAIKED. 0 Share this post Link to post
Jimmy Posted September 30, 2010 For anyone interested, The first official [DMG] SpeedMIDI session commences in an half an hour's time! :o Come down to the IRC channel and the official thread to check it out. Good luck to anyone who is participating! :D 0 Share this post Link to post
