the doom level riddle game

Recommended Posts

Object of the game: guess the Doom level and then post your description or riddle.

This thread started out as 'describe a room in a doom level' but I think making it a riddle might be more fun (but more difficult). Either way, the rules for describing are as follows:

You are not allowed to simply list characteristic features of the level, but, rather, you are to describe ONE area or room in the level. Caveat: as an alternative to a description, you may post just one distinguishing characteristic of the level instead, but not more than one unless you really feel the hint is too cryptic or could be true for more than one doom level.

You can be 'poetic' to make it more riddle-like, but it's very important that your description could only match one level, and not possibly work for two or more different levels. Ideal to have an intimate knowledge of Doom.

Near the exit this chamber
many monsters may enter,
but not through any door.
A warning they're coming
may be in the ceiling,
but not so much in the floor.

Question: Are the riddles supposed to be for maps in the IWADs or any map?

I was kinda thinking just the Doom Iwad, but we could maybe include the doom2 iwad in this thread as well.

I'm gonna have a stab at this one and say E3M5, Unholy Cathedral. It could be that room that houses the monster teleporters and the BFG. You can see the gaps in the ceilings used to allow sound to pass through into the adjacent rooms and awake the beasties!

Long shot, though. I'm not going to post mine until I land a correct answer.

i dunno how much of a long shot it was. :) good job, you are correct.

EDIT: here's another one for Doom 1:

There I was in the middle of my journey,
yet no keys anywhere could I find.

Splendid. Here comes the thunder. A tricky beast, perhaps:

Behind the steadfast sheaths of iron
The exit doth await
A leap of faith behind them both
Leads to a better fate.
Though stuck as one far from the sun
They cannot stand apart:
With gristle and in greed the reds shall tear into your heart!

Nice Alfonso! This is for Doom 1 or ... ?

But that would be telling! (Yeah. Heh. It is)

Nice shot DoomHero, but no cigar.

Do you guys think Doom 1 and Doom 2 should be included in this game, or just Ultimate Doom?

I reckon its e4m4, with the stuck as one line, refering to the two cacodemons occupying the same spot on the map

Jackpot! Stuck Cacodemons, iron cast bars in front of the exit and a "fall into the sky" leap of faith. Well done!

I was thinking e4m4 as well. The riddle implies that there are two pillars, which isn't quite the case, however, there are two sets of pillars. I think you're right foodles.

Awesome. Thinking beyond Ultimate Doom now... Let's mix up the rhymes a bit!

You drop into the sickly din
A wave of blood about your skin
It boils, it reeks, it falls in sheets
Though far ahead you see:
A gangly figure, standing tall;
As all around the air it bleeds.

Here's another:

The monsters may march two by two
Then burning death might follow you
Teleport twice for the final room
Take care young son, you might go Boom!
One room houses flying things
Another still, some spiderlings
But alas you may never reach this fun
If you cannot flee the fat man's gun.

yeah, it's an easy one, but I'm proud of the riddle.

Yes, as you should be, it was very good!

Now for mine?

One of many teleports
of laughing fire.
One of many forts
cannot get much higher.

Christ only knows. The laughing fire line hints at Archviles or Lost Souls, but I could easily be prodding the wrong fruit basket (<--?). As for rising/high forts I've no idea. Map24: The Chasm? E3M5 has a crud load of teleporters, but we've killed that horse already.

Damnit, Hellbent!

The Living End?

EDIT: no wait. It's map 15.

Good guesses. I will say that the riddle describes one particular place and is not describing more than one the way Doomhero's riddle did. I hope I have not broken my own rule of describing more than one area as this!

EDIT: I don't think any more hints should be needed.

EDIT: DoomHero: where specifically in Map 29 and Map15 were you thinking of?

Map 29, the end is the fort. Or map 15 the fort is the big green fort with the archer looking walls.

fair enough but what about the laughing fire?
