Doom 4 should have...

Recommended Posts

Ideally it should have them both, but since it takes place on Earth, chances are low.

Doom 4 should have demonic-looking monsters. No aliens. Period.

This was one of the major letdowns for me, after playing "Doom 3." When every futuristic first person shooter out there has you fighting generic alien creatures, "Doom" provided you with this abstract, hellish environment with creatures that were a mix of demonic and cybernetic, I mean, how many other games do that? id Softwares owes it to the fans to bring back that aesthetic.

I agree with the above. I recall many people saying that they thought the monster designs in Doom 3 were more 'realistic' and therefore better. To be honest I didn't even think they looked realistic in any way, and they mostly just looked dull. Especially the hellknight looks rubbish. Just your typical digitigrade alien muscle creature with no eyes.

Yawn...

Guys, I've heard id Software is trying to get Trent Reznor for the sounds and the music of the game.... Honestly, they should get SLAYER for the sounds and the music of the game.... because when I play DOOM I think of SLAYER. Also, I'm a huge SLAYER fan and I'm Roman-Catholic. So not all SLAYER fans are evil white-power wannabe Nazis... (well I am white myself and I'm PROUD TO BE WHITE but I don't scream out WHITE POWER everywhere I go).

I've seen Slayer live six years ago, and quite honestly they are in my list of WORST bands of all time. I've got respect for Kerry King because he seems like a nice guy with a clear opinion (and also for keeping up with those jackasses), but the other guys all played sloppy and uninspired. They left after only a couple of songs too, and they were on the main stage of the festival (Graspop). Awfull and incredibly overrated band, no doubt about it.

I think everybody already knows that Slayer would be a horrible choise for ANY game soundtrack, so I'm not even going to debate that again.

Also, why do you think people make the connection with Slayer and white power? When I think of Slayer, I mostly think of stupid teenage metalheads who scream 'SLAYEEEEEEEEEEEER' all the time.

Because, some idiots think us white people when we listen to SLAYER... they think we usually are far-right wing WHITE POWER people... well I do admit Slayer makes me proud to be white. Also, I only like two albums by SLAYER....

Reign in Blood and South of Heaven... the rest can suck it.

Slayer's riffs are pretty fitting for mindless demon slaughter, imo. And they White Power thing could be drawn from the Eagle (Nazi) in a lot of their artwork. Also, their Nazi related lyrics. Though, I think most people think Slayer is satanic more so than racist.

When I think of a sci-fi setting with monsters and demons I don't think Slayer at all.

Also, Slayer makes you proud to be white? Please, GTF off my internet. I don't like calling people names on the internet, but if you really feel that way you are a true idiot.

For me, it depends on what's happening. If there's a horde to mow through, a good thrashy, riff is fitting. If it's calm with a few monsters, something else would work. To each their own, though :)

Also, I don't think it's wrong, exactly, to be proud of your heritage. I'd use a different word as I don't see how you can be proud of something you have no choice on, though.

DOOM 4 should embrace the DOOM PSX version and the DOOM PC version... it should blend both soundtracks perfectly... DOOM PC wasn't heavy metal/rock music all the time you know.... but that's right the PSX Version was MUCH more scarier... yeah right... sure it was scary but still DOOM 4 is supposed to be more action-oriented like The Ultimate DOOM and DOOM 2. Which by the way featured tons of SLAYER, Pantera, Metallica, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Megadeth, and Alice in Chains.

And quite frankly, the atmosphere was shit. Demons are supposed to be scary, that's why they are called Demons.

If a band makes you proud to be white, that usually means that person is a national socialistic asshat. Thats why I replied to that the way I did.

I think you overestimate how 'fitting' Slayer would sound in Doom. For the most part it would sound silly, cheap, and for the most part distracting. I can make a soundtrack where I scream in the microphone the whole time, and I can probably tranfer some sense of chaos into the player, but as a soundtrack its ANNOYING to listen to. Id's not going to terrorize the player's eardrums, and it would frankly be the way to scare people away from the game since not nearly everybody likes metal.

I think Doom's supposed association with metal has largely been created by the fans themselves. The Doom 3 theme was the closest association that Doom ever had with metal music. That's the one music track that I can look at in the series and say "yeah, that's clearly metal music." And yes, the score to the original games was somewhat inspired by metal songs, but nevertheless, they still didn't have much of a metal feel to them. I mean, if you wanted to argue that the first Quake had a strong metal association, well, that's undeniable.

In any case, I agree that having some metal soundtrack for Doom 4 would make it sound pretty obnoxious. If id did that, I would be inclined to think that either they never really took the game seriously, or they didn't understand at all how to create the right atmosphere.

Yeah, you are right. The reason I compared Slayer with Doom was because when I hear songs like Seasons in the Abyss, I immediately associate the atmosphere the song projects with that of Doom but yeah metal blasting all the time would be obnoxious. I think a mix of the awesome ambient sounds of Doom 3 for exploring and metal music for combat would be appropriate though.

Hell, I'm not against metal music being in Doom 4. I would be fine if they used it as the theme again. I think that it worked perfectly as Doom 3's theme. It would also be okay to use it at key moments throughout the game as well, like for certain boss fights. It just has to be reserved for special occasions, I think.

I have never associated DOOM with metal music, even though some tracks are based on metal / rock songs. I love it when heavy tunes hit when a horde of enemies appear in Painkiller... but I've played a couple of GZDOOM mods that had an actual, non-midi, mp3 metal tracks and I couldn't stand them.

It's also important to remember that soundtrack for a game / movie is not an album. Two examples of what I consider a game soundtrack done the right way would be Diablo (1) and Portal 2.

I think you meant to say Quake 2. Unless you're defining the whole of Quake (1)'s soundtrack by it's metal-ish title theme.

I've played Slayer to Dooming before. It works fine for me. Metal in general works for me. And comparing screaming to metal? I don't see the similarities. We're talking about metal riffs, not the vocalization of Screamo / 'hardcore' groups.

I'm not saying make the whole soundtrack Metal, no. I'm saying a Metal riff is fine for a battle. Worked well in Unreal against Space Marines, worked well in Quake 2. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that I like it. I'm not overestimating anything.

Wasn't Quake 1's music more industrial-ish, with the Nine Inch Nails soundtrack?

I never got the CD-version of Quake so I wouldn't really know, but I did look up the soundtrack on YouTube.
