Good Games

Recommended Posts

I agree with Liam about the Diablo games..at least to an extent:
Diablo 2 has the coolest character classes and the best spell system (YES! I can pick my spells when I level up instead of being dependent on tomes), but somehow, killing monsters ain't as fun in Diablo 2 and there are WAY too many items for the player to pick up, resulting in most of the game being about going back and forth between town and battlefield, I WANT TO SLAUGHTER MONSTERS, NOT WASTE TIME SELLING ITEMS!!!!
Diablo (1) had a good balance of items, you rarely got too many potions and even when that happened, you could just dump them in the town without worrying about limited space. In other words: The first game had fewer annoying interruptions in the killing spree.
Another sucky thing about Diablo 2 compared to 1 is that most of the time the opposition is so damn weak that I can litterally wade through the enemies without even worrying about losing health and suddenly you run into a big bad miniboss with lightning enchantment who kills you in seconds flat because you reflexes have been dulled fighting piss-easy monsters, AARRRGGGHHHHH!

You don't have to do that... I don't pick up any items unless they are rares or uniques, or exceptional armors (they usually give the max 35k of gold when sold). Also items that give skills, such as sorceress staffs, can be sold for lots of gold.

however this is a bit too much. I wonder who wastes real money on a game item...

You don't even know half of it...
I sold some of my shitty stuff (lvl 85 HC barb Zerovous-XIX with eq) before the expension for 1000 kr ($100). Maybe I could get some cash for a 1.08 vampire gaze with a ber rune too if I could find my ebay account info somewhere (and my d2 accounts haven't expired)...

Some people scammed/duped a lot and made some serious money off diablo2, $5000 in one month was a figure I heard about another swedish player.

Me and my friends duped up a few hundred stones of jordan, but we never did anything serious with them.

Luckily I left that sorry excuse for a game behind me long ago.

Diablo 1 kicks Diablo 2 in it's nutsack, waits for it to get up, kicks it in the nutsack again, then peels it's skin off and covers it in salt.

I havent even installed it and I already cant stand it. Arioch and aurikans constant unrepentant talking about their Diablo2 adventures on IRC has convinced me never ever to ever install it ever.

This is exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about.

How could I forget Starcraft, stupid me.

Diablo 2 rocks way more than the first one. It's just that it's more of the same despite all the extra fancy features. How many mices can you fuck up before it gets boring?

Castlevania games, all of them, ESPECIALLY Symphony of the Night (I paid $180 for a Saturn, Gameshark and Japanese import of that game just to get the 2 additional areas... and I did this last year)

I can't believe I forgot to put this on my list... deadnail, do you have Dracula X Duo by chance? I've been looking everwhere for that game and nobody wants to sell their copy. It's supposedly the best in the series aside from SOTN.

Two more for you all:

The Splatterhouse series.
Guilty Gear series. (the only figher game I've truly loved)

forgot a few...

Mega Man!! how could I?? part 1 and 2 are the best.

Soulblade, perfect game if you have a few friends at home and don't know what to do, owns tekken any day.

RoadRunner for snes. This game was one of the hardest games (for me) that I've beaten. That says a lot about how much fun it is. The speed is just insane.

Diablo 2 doesn't feel anywhere NEAR the same as the first Diablo.
Battles in Diablo1 felt more realistic because you would block attacks with your shield more often than in Diablo 2 (even after installing the exp. pack it still doesn't do the trick). Also, you can't just wade through monsters in Diablo1 like you can in Diablo 2, you have to lure the monsters away from each other and bag them one by one, whereas in Diablo 2 you just mindlessly point your mouse cursor at a random monster in a large group and keep your mousebutton pressed until the monster dies *yawn*.

It doesn't matter if it feels the same or not, it's exactly the same mechanic. Would you play a Diablo III that consists of repeated clicking, fireball dodging and light-speed potion drinking? This time they need something fresh.

And about luring monsters and stuff. I used to play Diablo 1 by atracting a large crowd to a door or a corner. With the 3x hit of the Monk or the Barbarian (from the Hellfire expansion) you can kill them without any particular worries.

/Me looks at Doom 2
Hmm, looks excactly the same as Doom1. But I agree that the basic mechanics in Diablo 2 are more or less the same.

Maybe so, but it doesn't change the fact that you spend much more time actually running away from the monsters, trying to isolate them in Diablo1, whereas in Diablo 2 you can just charge into a large horde of monsters and slash away at them - charging into a group much larger than three enemies in Diablo1 (particularly when you're up against those tough dark knights) is suicide.
And may I point out that I'm referring to the original Diablo1 (without the monk or barbarian), and I sure haven't employed the same tactics I use in the sequel successfully in that version.

Anyway, this Diablo vs Diablo 2 discussion is gettin' ridiculous. It's obvious that some people prefer the sequal, whereas some prefer the first game (like me). I'm just pointing out WHY I like the first Diablo game better, but unlike some people involved in this discussion I actually LIKE Diablo 2 - I just like the first Diablo better.

Civilization - Probably the best game ever. Rewrite the history of the world! Aztecs conquer the Earth in 1435 A.D.! Yay! I can't wait to get Civ III.

Space Quest - I can't belive no one mentioned this. It's extremely funny and requires something very alien to todays games - strategy!

Fallout 2 - Heh. Probably the dirtiest game ever made that has nothing to do with porn. Its also very funny and requires good roleplaying.

Planescape: Torment - Best RPG ever (including the console crap). Awesome characters, storyline, plus the kick ass Planescape setting.

Quake 2 - Probably my favorite FPS. I just love the enemies, the setting, the feel. Multiplayer used to be cool, now it sucks online.

Duke Nukem 3D - The only game where I've actualy mastered the editor, besides Warcraft.

Total Annihilation - Probably the first 3D RTS. It gets more fun when you download additional maps and units. Don't bother with Total Annihilation: Kingdoms. Its total crap.

D&D - Because you said games, not computer games. Hehe. Surprisingly, this game is more socaily rewarding than any computer game.

DnD is socially rewarding? I just play Baldur's Gate :p

Speaking of which, I'm drawing a custom portrait for BG right now. My cartoon style kind of looks out of place next to the realistic NPC portraits but hey, it adds a personal touch to the game =)

Yeah, since I began seriously playing D&D 6 months ago, I've met several people and have improved my interaction skills. No joke!

I think this would be a great time to relate to you what happened at the last game session (and possibly blow my previous argument clear out of the water):

Okay...it all started at a previous gaming session where we were staying at an inn. In the middle of the night all of the sudden everyone began to freak out because of hllucinogenics in the bread. So we resolve the issue and continue on. Unbenownst to the rest of the PCs, my friends character, a Human Fighter (and a pretty badass one at that), takes a load of bread along with him and stows it in the cart.

Now we continue along until the next session completely oblivious to what has occoured. We end up meeting up with a couple more PCs in the next town and help them bring down an evil cult. We do so, and the townspeople rejoyce, planning a feast in out honor (I think you can see whats going to happen). And of course, out fighter 'generously' gives a load of bread to the townspeople for the feast. Oh joy. So the day of the feast comes, and everyone in town is there except for a scant few town guards scattered around the rest of the town.

Of course, everyone east the bread and goes nuts. Chaos breaks out. Several people die. Meanwhile, the fighter is running around town, laughing maniacaly. Soon he realizes the possible reprecussions, and decides to high-tail it out of town. On the way the fighter (alignment CG) is stopped by a couple town guards. Well, maybe 'stopped' isnt the right word. He basicaly just plows through them and moves on to the guards at the gate and slaughters them as well. He ends up running through the countryside, cutting a bloody swath across the land, killing hundreds. Now he's in his Uncle's temple, having slaughtered the surrounding town and giving himself over to Khorne, the Chaos god of Blood. Well, needless to say, his alignment is now Chaotic Evil, and the DM has a new villain. I guess there are more ways than death to get a new character. :p
