Duke Never Comes Early

Recommended Posts

That was in the previously linked article.

Anyway, I haven't played much of the game, but all I will say is that playing the game is more fun than watching it be played, which I think helps bias people to some of the negative video reviews. Also, in the parts I played I shot every woman in the face, to no avail. I can't wait to get to the Hive part.

It's basically a big fuck you to that whiny crowd.

yeah, maybe... but you're a person that probably wouldn't flinch at cannibal holocaust or french-style slashers which the crudeness of the hive in dnf resembles, just set in an ugly alien theme with some random ideas tacked on. dn3d became popular (among other reasons) for the cartoonish, light hearted approach to gore, like big trouble in little china or something.
also i sincerely doubt sending a big fuck you to a large part of your customers is a sane idea.

The content is twisted enough, but my real issue is that that level is going to give creepy neckbearded fucks the world over more ammunition.

"And then, the tentacles raped her! Ahahaha dude, it was so fuuucked up! It's just like my japanese animes!"

I can't wait to go to my gaming store later on tonight. I just can't fucking wait.

So you'd have a level in a game omitted because a certain demographic might find it um, stimulating?

You're right, it's sad and creepy should anyone actually find the part of the game emotionally resonant. But surely people are allowed to think what they want about something.

Where did I say that? I'm not petitioning for it's removal, just voicing my opinion on the content.

...nothing I said was meant to imply otherwise. I really don't know what you're talking about at. Yeah, you can think it's cool and just like one of your sweet slasher movies. But that gives me the right to think that you are a creepy permavirgin (not talking about *you* specifically, just giving an example).

Tentacle porn hasn't been "weird" or "creepy" since middle school.

I don't know, I knew a 20-something guy who first saw that stuff a year ago in a Japanese porn shop.

That face was priceless.

You'd have to ask though how much of that style was forced by technical limitations at the time.

Seems like a very minor detail after failing to deliver the goods for 15 years.

As for Cannibal Holocaust, I tried watching it once a long time ago and was stopped short by the scene with the girl being raped with a rock. I probably wouldn't mind watching it now but it's just too crappy a movie for me to even try it again.

Here's something more fitting for the Hive debate, Galaxy of Terror.

Fair enough. Guess I mistook your disapproval for something more sinister.

I always thought the animal cruelty in that movie (which was all done for real, unlike the claims at the time that it was in fact a snuff movie) was what stirred up the most controversy. Particularly the scene involving a turtle.

Frankly the Hive bit reminded me of playing AvP2 and Duke3D. The babes meant nothing to me, much like they mean nothing to Duke. I'm gutted that I didn't notice you could slap the wall boobs though, or just didn't notice them at all. I went through destroying everything in case it hatched some of those protozoid slimers from Duke3D. As it turns out, they aren't in the game and it was Octobabies and Pregnators that I had to watch out for, which were fun enough to fight. The Pregnators definitely reminded me of the spitting Antlions from HL2 Episode 2, but with loads of cock jokes for when you kill them.

I don't see what there is to be offended by. It's just a fun game through and through for me.

Now I need to see this hive level to see what all the controversy is about.

Pointed my browser towards Zero Punctuation's page this morning hoping to find the most entertaining review he's ever done. I guess he needs time to find the words.

Or maybe finding a way to be completely factually inaccurate like his Brink and Witcher 2 "reviews".

Bah humbug. His weekly misanthropic piss-taking and exploitation of certain elements of games for comedic effect is something I look forward to. I wish he could produce them more often. If you want a serious, non-bias review of a given game go to another website.

Finished it. It's too short. Yeah. I enjoyed it though. It's not a revolution by any means but why did anybody expect that from a game in development for 12 years? Also, sensetive folks bitchin about the hive level: grow balls.

The entire pop-culture has become more jaded than we were in the 90's with all the over-the-top reality shows on TV, dragging human ethics to the bottom. So it's only natural for this game to push it to the limit when it comes to tastelessness. And I quite frankly think it's awesome. I'm entertained.

I've heard that the 1998 version was almost done, then they completely scrapped it. Is this true? And if so, I wonder where any archival copies could be? (so it could be leaked so people can play the real DNF and not this abortion)

Now that 3D Realms is closed, it'll be hard for whoever still holds the older versions on disk to get them out to the public seeing as they lost the rights of the franchise. It's kind of like the situation with the Daikatana's betas and source code.

3D Realms had a good track record with releasing older version free, too. The completed Shadow Warrior add-on was a real treat.

Funny thing is the night before take-two interactive filed its lawsuit against 3d realms inc. George Broussard ("georgeb3dr" on twitter) posted a picture of a huge buffet of catered in broasted chicken feast for like twenty on these long tables to be consumed prior to the regular on-going daily world of warcraft battles (that he himself described in his post) and the-then and highly invested into developers (they just received an additional 5 mil not too long prior) of duke nukem forever would partake in.

To this day i highly believe that's the straw that broke the camels back with take-two. but i could be wrong its just the series of events that took place at the time convinced me that they should have been finishing a game they were being paid to finish.

I like this topic.

"There's nothing but poop and pee jokes in this. It's totally un-serious. This isn't like Duke!"

*Hive level comes up*

"Boy, this game is really dark. I can't believe they did this! This isn't funny!"

I watched my sister's boyfriend play through the Hive part (it's his game, I wan't buying it heh). The reviews really blow it out of proportion.

RightField said:

It wasn't the content, just that reviews make it look like Duke lost his territorial protective nature over his 'babes', which was part of what made up his character. I mean, going to war over women then blowing those women's heads off and laughing at their corpses for no reason really makes no sense. Yeah, he has to put them out of their misery again, but he's just as upset about it this time too.

I'm genuinely impressed with people's attitude toward this game. Especially towards how many people here regularly play many different games and still proceed to describe a game like this as "good." I watched about 90 minutes worth of gameplay videos of DNF and I can honestly say the game is downright hideous. I'm sure many would disagree but I would argue that your standards for judging a video game are embarrassingly low for what decade it is.

It's just really stupid to me that a game like Duke Nukem 3d, that starts you off on a rooftop with a gun ready to kick ass right from the start, and stages four or five aliens in front of you within the first 10 seconds of gameplay, would backtrack so horribly to the same recycled interactive movie script gameplay that almost every game in the world has followed suit since Half-Life.

The game is at best playable but I can't help but be offended at how the game, (in addition to many games around this time) treat players like a complete braindead zombie. There's a strict linear path to follow for the entire game, there's more minigames than there are aliens to kill, and there are blinking directions on your screen that teach you how to handle every obstacle you encounter. In addition to that, not only is the dry humor in the game unfunny, there's no subtlety to it whatsoever, it's poorly written, and in many cases completely unoriginal.

You'd think that after 15 years since Duke Nukem 3D our standards would be a little higher than this.

Didn't you "watch" someone play Call of Duty and decide it was bad as well?

DNF was a meh. Huge fan from Duke3d (was a time where more than DooM)i find no real Duke in Forever. Alas, God of War or Assasins Creed give you more enemies to kill at same that Forever!!! But maily, because is not an old school game: linear levels (a lot) small levels, scripted shooting, two only weapons at hand, vehicles, etc, etc. Those are the things that make hate the "new" standard FPS (and i cannot stand it, sorry, boring as hell)

What the hell where they doing all those years? Ok, to me it doesn't matter. Only matter the final product. And to me its just average.

(i had the same disappointed feeling as with DooM 3, but this time i was sure that will happened)

No.

But even if that were so, the only difference between playing the game and watching the game being played is that I'm not touching buttons on my keyboard. All of the content I described in my post was completely lucid in the video of the game, I don't need to play it to verify that it was there.

I don't understand the sheer hatred for the two weapon limit repeatedly stated on forums. Honestly it didn't bother me at all, and to have all weapons at once would really destroy the challenge unless the whole game was re-worked.

Personally I give this game 6/7 out of 10, yes it has its problems but they are heavily exaggerated for the most part. Plus the jokes make me chuckle. Anyone played Land of the Babes? It was pretty crap but I still enjoyed it all the same because of the humour. I mean games are for entertainment right?

How do you figure that? The game is full of infinite ammo repositories anyway, so I don't see how having access to all weapons could damage the difficulty level any further.

I thought it was well established by now that 40oz doesn't play games but instead simply bitches and moans about them based on screenshots and watching his brother play for 30 seconds.

That said, this isn't a bad game. It's just an average game which is why I think it's been viewed so negatively so far. Considering how long the game's been in development as well as the fact that it's Duke Nukem, it's obvious that expectations were high and that anything short of a miraculous revolution in game design would be considered a huge let down. In the end though, what really matters is that Bruce Campbell is laughing his ass off and pissing on a copy of Duke Nukem Forever as I'm typing this.
