Awesome stroller! That crusher strat is so cool. Casually shedding 60 health points to save a little time.

E1M3 Stroller in 18:38.71

e1m3str1838.zip

The stroller category fascinates me - there's something mesmerizing (and funny) about Doomguy just casually walking through a map. When looking at the records for Episode 1, I saw E1M3 had no successful Stroller posted (except for a TAS) and I wanted to give it a try. Little did I know that this would be the hardest grind I've done so far - there's so many enemies you need to go through and there's a ton of RNG involved.

In the end I went for the secret exit - I'm convinced the regular exit is possible too, but the map becomes so much longer. Getting the secret supercharge + the goodies behind the yellow door will definitely carry you towards the end, though the imp blocking the hallway to that door is extremely annoying and hard to get out of the way. And getting there in the first place is very, very hard.

Really glad I was able to beat it, though I'm also very happy it's over. I learned a ton along the way!

Gg. Glad you fancy a little strolling.

I looked at it too, but I didn't have the patience needed for the starting area. I also concluded that it's possible to do the normal exit too, and I did notice that the imp guarding the goodies to be very annoying. I see that the game gave you plenty of BS, such as when you got hit by an exploding barrel, and took lots of damage at the end.

Now that's massive, GG Vytaan! That's the route I would've used too, or tried to, but I was too hasty and never got far. It seems an entirely different kind of gameplay is required, one of patience and lurking... I need to implement backwards walking more, it seems it's more or less mandatory for getting dodging and infighting right in a long demo. I'm impressed by the way you manoeuvred monsters back and forth. And two imps infighting! I didn't know that was possible! Anyway, very encouraging, this demo. The others won't be quite as impenetrable after this.

Super cool. :) The door stuck strat was really interesting, that survival looked super dicey, heh, looks like a lot of it went the way it shouldn't. Definitely feels like if you can get to the soul sphere, you should be able to do the normal exit through the same sort of slow infighting approach. :D

Yeah, patience is definitely key here. I got extremely lucky with the two infighting imps - from what I can tell, the imp hit the barrel from outside the window? First time it happened in all those runs. At first I thought 'dammit, the barrel only killed one imp... not enough value from the explosion' until I noticed the remaining one wasn't targeting me anymore :P You can see my surprise during the run as well haha.

Some combination of panic and hope definitely set in towards the end! I'm pretty sure I could have just walked past the final imps and pinkies, but I got afraid and turned back... which ended up almost killing me. Still can't believe I was able to manoeuvre between them, lucky pathing I guess.

And for sure: the regular exit is 100% doable! I actually recorded a demo last week where I reached the regular exit, but uh... I strafed. I somehow thought the stroller category meant you only couldn't run, so my excitement quickly turned to huge disappointment when I learned strafing wasn't allowed either :( Of course that made it a lot easier, but as you said I'm very sure you can reach that exit the same way. Reaching the yellow door = guaranteed win and pretty much allows you to tank the final room.

I'm trying to clear the remaining E1 maps in the same way - not sure if I can do it and how much time I want to invest, but we'll see! E1M5 definitely feels doable...

Good luck. :D Off the top of my head, I can imagine the end of E3M6 being probably the hardest thing to work through. No idea how you deal with that with just walk, heh. E1M9 is probably rough, but maybe it's not that bad since it's not as long at least. Not sure what other big problem maps there would be.

E1m9 is doable if you can get past the poison floor walk around and imp? Blocking the little lift to get back up. Last time I tried that was where I ended but refining my route to get the armour could make that more doable ...

Great work, Vytaan ! Really, I didn't see this one coming. I thought that other levels would come first.

4shock, you mentioned E3M6 but it has been done by taedev.

Anyway, I'll be happy to see any remaining level beaten !

E1M9 was my next challenge, but after a lot of trying I gave up on it. You're right, it's all about the final section... but it's demotivating how it's completely dependent on how the imps behave. The imp near the switch can't move off the platform which is horrible, and the imps in the hallway need to move just right so you can walk past them. And then they'll still most likely either block the lift or scratch you to death as you go up - or sometimes imps/pinkies on the top floor will be waiting for you :^)

More health/armor increases your chances, but even when specifically practicing the final section with 100/100 my success rate was very low. Not 0, so I agree that it's possible, but the grind isn't nearly as fun as E1M3.

E1M5 feels possible, maybe? This is my best attempt (in over 500+ attempts and many, many hours):image.png.852d9d965c01920a2552a56bb5c14980.png

A lot of progress, lots of kills, but the imp hallway before the blue key is supercrowded and you either need to be very lucky to walk past everything or there needs to be a different strategy. Maybe you'll be able to remove enough imps by having them hit barrels...? In any case, you can't really lure them away AFAIK. Getting this far in the first place is extremely timeconsuming with the way I set up infighting, so I think I'll skip this one too. I think it's possible though if you can reach the blue key!

Thank you! Your videos are basically what introduced Stroller to me :D Hope to see more demos from you!

Oops, I meant E1M6, I guess my recent E3M6 runs made me say that map. :p

I was wondering about e1m6 too. I remember that the hard part is at the end, at least for pacifist. I think due to the cramped nature of the room, that normal movements shouldn't help that much, so it would be possible as a stroller. Is my logic correct?
