General Rainbow Bacon Posted June 23, 2011 Hi, I've been going through the archive playing a lot of maps and I thought it would be nice to start a thread of early single wads that are very good i.e. levels from '94 - '96 that catch me as being above the usual crap that came out then. The first one is library.wad There are a couple of '95isms, but overall this is a cool map. http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=3628 EDIT: These will all be doom 2 0 Share this post Link to post
General Rainbow Bacon Posted June 23, 2011 Got another. This one is blside2.wad by Scott Harper. A very challenging map from late '94, possibly the best '94 single wad in the archive. http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=6719 0 Share this post Link to post
valkiriforce Posted June 23, 2011 Oracle was pretty amazing for its time. You may also want to check out Fortress of Death as that one is pretty cool and top-notch for 1995. 0 Share this post Link to post
General Rainbow Bacon Posted June 23, 2011 I remember oracle, it was really good. I've played Fortress too and remember it being good. Almost done going through '94 doom 2 wads now. 0 Share this post Link to post
General Rainbow Bacon Posted June 24, 2011 Got another for you all. This ones called Sirius1.wad A fun if easy level with cool architecture. http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=2371 0 Share this post Link to post
valkiriforce Posted June 24, 2011 I just remembered Earth Scum by Guy Stockie; I first found it as part of Maximum Doom and I enjoyed it. Also, DM2GM1 and DM2GM3A by Eric Reuter who contributed to Memento Mori. 0 Share this post Link to post
General Rainbow Bacon Posted June 24, 2011 Here's another great little map from late '94. Some nice surprises in this one. http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=1273 0 Share this post Link to post
General Rainbow Bacon Posted June 25, 2011 Bf_thud!.wad Check this one out if you want a really good oldschool megawad. Came out early '95 http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=1248 0 Share this post Link to post

Came out early '95 http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=1248 I played that one all the way through a year or so ago. I remember I think the first two levels were my favorite. There were some other cool levels in there as well though. [EDIT] Actually, I should mention Christen Klie's style has really influenced me quite a bit. He was good at making interesting puzzles and nicely inter-connected structures. I especially enjoyed his Master Level contributions as those were the first I had played of his maps. 0 Share this post Link to post

General Rainbow Bacon Posted June 29, 2011 I wouldn't really call this one a gem, but if you want a good challenge this is one as the only health in the map is secret. http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=13419 0 Share this post Link to post
General Rainbow Bacon Posted June 29, 2011 Here's a cool little level: Slimetun.wad http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=1557 0 Share this post Link to post

Xaser Posted July 22, 2011 This thread's title confuses me. I keep logically translating it as "Early maps that DoomHero made." 0 Share this post Link to post
General Rainbow Bacon Posted July 22, 2011 This one's by Dario Casali. That should be enough, but There are two versions in the zip. Play runriot.wad http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=1394 0 Share this post Link to post

The angled hallway near the revenant/caco cage that the homing projectiles can track you down? ohshittttt 0 Share this post Link to post
valkiriforce Posted July 23, 2011 I've recommended this before, but Jens Nielsen's Walkabout is worth checking out. Plus Interdiction Zone. 0 Share this post Link to post
General Rainbow Bacon Posted July 28, 2011 If you've never played this one, I highly recommend it: http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=7427 0 Share this post Link to post
General Rainbow Bacon Posted July 28, 2011 An okay map with challenging gameplay, and what I think might be the first use of an insta-death trap. Interesting for that feature at least, but not really a gem. http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=2789 0 Share this post Link to post

[edit] Just played 'Fortress of Death" and it was pretty good too. I remember Oracle was amazing for its day, but that day sure isn't today. 0 Share this post Link to post
Hellbent Posted July 28, 2011 If you guys come across a doom 1 classic feeling map (e3ish) matching the following description please let me know! For some reason I can't remember if the texturing was gstone, marble or brown1. But I remember it being quite uniform in texture use and having a fair amount of blood-ways in it. That's basically it. It was low detail but it had a peculiar atmosphere and feel to it that I really liked. Thanks. 0 Share this post Link to post
General Rainbow Bacon Posted July 28, 2011 It wasn't by chance this: http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=12294 was it? 0 Share this post Link to post

General Rainbow Bacon Posted July 30, 2011 Here's an example of what a good first pwad from '95 looks like. Has some hard encounters and a few '95isms, but overall is better than many first maps we get here today, and it uses a pretty rockin' music track. http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=14387 0 Share this post Link to post

Lots of questionable texturing but that gives it character IMO. The ascending staircase behind the arachnotron and the subsequent descending elevator? sheeeeeeeeeeeeet 0 Share this post Link to post
