The amazing "identify that Doom song" thread.

Recommended Posts

Hey, guys. I've been following this thread for a long time and discovered some cool music as well as some answers, but I still have certain tunes that I can't find the origins of, and I hope someone here can help.
One of my favourite megaWADs, Epic 2 - https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/epic2 - has a few songs of which I'd love to know, and while the Doom Wiki has a page on this WAD, there is no information on the music for these particular maps:

Map 03 - Black Magic
Map 09 - Mystery
Map 15 - Astral Base
Map 20 - Anomaly Zone
Map 23 - Oasis
Map 25 - Per Nefer (I'm sure this one must be from an Aladdin game or something similar, lol)
Map 28 - Ogdoad (the Wiki says it's "Alice - The Unbegotten Dreams" but I scoured Google and found nothing but this page with the MIDI - http://www.midi-karaoke.info/211ece39.html - and I can't even download the file)
Map 30 - Amenthes
Map 32 - The Harbour (sounds like something more Oriental than Egyptian)

Additionally, I know someone mentioned NeoDoom here already and I am aware that Daniel wrote the original music himself, but there's a WAD called "neodoommapsv2" and it has an entirely new list of music replacing Daniel's tracks - http://static.best-ever.org/wads/neodoommapsv2.wad

I think these new songs are awesome but I could not identify a single one. Are these also all original songs or can you help me find any of them? Thanks in advance. :P

Independently of whether that site lets you download the file or not, that's it.

Try to copy-paste this in your URL bar, it should download http://www.midi-karaoke.info/211ece39.play.mid

Thanks, it does work but it doesn't really give me any answers to the song's origin other than "copyright BUHS 2001" and that it's a Russian game, from what I've searched. I still could have just taken the MIDI file from Slade, so it's no big deal that the webpage didn't work for me. I was hoping to get some answers about the other tracks really :P

What more can there be to tell you? It's someone, presumably Russian, who used the online name BUHS, who wrote this song, and it's inspired by Lewis Caroll's Alice.

No, it's not from a game or anything. It's just a song. Some people write MIDI music for fun. You can tell because there's "XG only" in the description; if it was from a game it wouldn't have an instruction for which kind of synth should be used to play it.

Epic 2: Map 23

Legendary Beast from Final Fantasy 8.

The midi skips a 15-20 second intro.

Thank you! Much appreciated :D

I'll add it to the Doom Wiki page. I noticed that Map 15 has since been filled in there, so that's also great! I bet one or two more of these tracks are from a Final Fantasy game, but I wouldn't know and it would take forever to go through every game's soundtrack. I'd still love to find out any more of these, and I'm hoping to get some more answers. I've decided to share links for the remaining songs to make it easier and more direct to have a listen for yourselves:

I hope this helps! :)

Anyone know what the two tracks in CALDERA.WAD for Hexen are? Particularly the Cadre Ixion one (STEAL in the WAD lumps) but interested to know about both.

According to metadata, map25 is "Metallic Madness: Present" from Sonic CD, and map29 is the dungeon music from Castlevania 64.

Calling all 90s music enthusiasts!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axV5BGCxov8

The first level of the 1999 Duke Nukem 3D addon American Assault. It has a midi that has caught my ear, I recognize it but don't know what it is. Definitely a midi-ized version of some hit rock song from the 90s.

Skip to 46 seconds in if you want for the midi part of the chorus refrain, the catchiest part. But you might recognize the riff or bassline too.

No credits in the official textfile, somebody guessed ComixZone but I checked and don't think so. If you can identify this song, you win and have the most 90s music cred of all time, a true champion! Thanks. This mod uses Doom2's super shotgun by the way.

So I've listened to the video, and had the very same vague sense of familiarity.

But I think we're both wrong about it because I'm sure I've never heard the "real" track before.

It is Repeat by Grinspoon, with pretty confusing MIDI instrument mappings.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=getS9xAfvUc

If you unpack the GRP and check USER.CON, you can see that the music for first map is repeat.mid.
If you check repeat.mid itself, you can find the following message:

Spoiler

-Repeat
-By Australian Band
-Grinspoon
-From the Album: Guide To Better Living
======================
-sequenced by Jim Marshall
marsh@netconnect.com.au
=======================
Nirvana Down Under
http://users.netconnect.com.au/~marsh/
May '98

Also, deep inside xtras.zip there's a file "music.txt", containing partially wrong and incomplete list of music credits. This specific MIDI is in there, labeled correctly.

This is a list of all the names and bands whos play the songs fetured in this TC

Very very cool, thanks! And you're right, I don't think I've heard this song before, just reminiscent of other 90s alt rock hits. And thanks for the extra info too, you know the score! You are the master of the musics!

DANCE.MID (c) Creative Technology Ltd 1994.
One of the sample midis included with Soundblaster cards back in the day.

Actually I wonder where I had it from... I knew I remember it from back in the day, but I spent quite a while browsing archives of Voyetra sample midis, my sound card shipped Voyetra softare. :p

Found Epic 2: Map 3 while replaying Final Fantasy 9.

Tracking down a recording of this barely-heard track took more work than the identification.

"Fossil Roo"

Thanks so much, I knew it was worth checking back here every so often! :D I had a feeling that some of these may be songs from Final Fantasy games, but I've never really played any of the franchise and there's a lot to go through. :P
