Grazza Posted August 26, 2011 eternal slumber said (about I.S.M.): I played that a couple months ago and liked it as well, except I'm not sure if I finished it. IIRC health/ammo was scarce? The jumbo dining room was pretty memorable for me though. Yes, very scarce. I recorded a very slow demo years ago just to show that it was possible to exit the map on UV. I was doing things like non-berserk punching impotent PEs, and still was running out at various points. I don't think there's scope for a Max, due to the cybers at the end. BTW, I'm a little mystified at most of the replies to this thread (which appear to be "iwad levels I like that someone else criticized at some point"). Clearly the OP is referring to pwads, and levels that very few other people like (as far as one can tell). How exactly e4m2 (for instance) can come up in either context is rather bizarre. 0 Share this post Link to post

Sigvatr Posted August 26, 2011 chordg by Malcolm Sailor. It is amazing. I play it all the time. Everything about it is sublime. The best Doom map ever made. Everyone else complains about it having not enough ammo and too hard monsters :| 0 Share this post Link to post
fullmetalvaran33 Posted August 27, 2011 E1M8, Phobos Anomaly Revisited by The_trigger (aka doomliker) A lot of people said it was a "Thunderpeak" rip-off, and while I agree that, yes, "E1M8, PAR" does have a strong "Thunderpeak" theme, that's what I like about it. E1M8 is my all-time favorite classic Doom map, and I thought doomliker did a great job updating its visual style without overdoing it. Stronghold: On the Edge of Chaos by various authors It was bashed quite a bit before it was even released, and it seemed like it was set up to be disliked from the start. But I think it's a gorgeous megaWAD that, while ball-bustingly tough, is very challenging and entertaining. I loved every map's visual style and the amazing amount of detail present. I don't even like invasion-style WADs but this one appeals to me. The Beesong by Death-Destiny I don't know why it has only 3 stars at idgames. I liked it a lot--slaughter-fest madness all around. Thee bee sprites were kind of corny, and I would have liked to see a boss bee, but I found this to be brutal fun. Fear of the Dark/Blood of the Earth Despite "Fear of the Dark's" messed up starting point, one can easily find the correct starting area (it's a square room made of brown dirt with a dead marine, a shotgun, some shells, and green armor). Going to this part of the map makes it entirely playable. I like both a lot (dark, creepy, cramped--very intense for me), and I think that it gets harsh reviews because of the flaw in FotD. Hellfire Abyss by Henri Lehto Sometimes, the architecture got in the way, but I still really enjoyed it. Visually surreal and slightly medieval, dreamlike music, and some solid gameplay. I don't see why it gets so many "meh" reviews. It's really not bad at all. 0 Share this post Link to post
Phobus Posted August 27, 2011 Quite a few to be honest - particularly when you go into ZDoom .WADs I seemed to be one of very few people who enjoyed playing cjwright's maps though. 0 Share this post Link to post
valkiriforce Posted August 27, 2011 Got another one; Jim Flynn's maps. Because his maps are very puzzle-oriented and most people don't seem to like that. Bob Evans maps in Eternal Doom were pretty insane but cool for that reason, too. 0 Share this post Link to post

Your not alone man, try again. :) Another one that I have to add to this list is a map called Enochian, which, I love to bits because the layout and monster placement hit all the right notes for me, and the experience felt like such an adventure. But when I left feedback I got flamed on idgames. I remember there being a comment there that was removed because it was a personal insult. ;) http://doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=10152 Screenie: http://www.doomworld.com/sir_robin/castle/reviews/enochian.jpg 0 Share this post Link to post
MegaDoomer Posted September 7, 2011 Are there any Doom maps you can think of, that you just absolutely loved, yet no one seems to talk much about (or commonly reference) them? For me, the biggest standout I can think of at this point is E2M6 of ZPack - Zippy's Terror Cube. Everyone talks about Vader's maps and Sector as the pack's gems/highlights, yet this hidden gem deep in an episode with none of these highlight maps in it is personally right up there with, or in some cases maybe even beyond, the others for my favorite maps in the pack. So - it doesn't have to be from ZPack of course - and it could be an entire level set or just a single level (regardless of whether it's a single level wad or just one level out of a pack as in my case) - but if you have any such maps you feel this way about, what ones come to mind? I might even find, or help uncover, some big gems I (or many others in the community) never knew of if some vague releases come up in the discussion - and that's the main reason I'm putting up this thread. 0 Share this post Link to post

Hellbent Posted September 7, 2011 Xaser said:E5M1. I just gave this map a second try. Very cool level. The secrets are very well done, although the hidden switch routine does get a bit old.... Cool atmosphere, although first encounter with the level gave me the wobblies. I wouldn't have minded some medkits. I found my health was always in a damn rush to 0, but maybe part of that is I am playing on a keyboard. As for the topic of this thread.. it's a good question but I'd have to think about that a fair bit to come up with one. :D her needs red readerses digesteses 0 Share this post Link to post

Well, you're definitely not alone there. In fact, while other individual maps are stronger/more striking in some areas, I think Terror Cube might be the quintessential Doom map in my book. It's got a weird alien canyon and temple with some staircase puzzles, an invaded and fucked up base, and a classic and well done Hell section that has one of the few special effects ever to really make my jaw drop in a Doom map despite being so simple in concept (it's when you raise and lower the blood pool for the first time). And all the different monster infested dimensions are tied together by this creepy artifact that just sits there and sends you places, like an infernal version of the monolith in 2001. Every time someone makes a Doom map that looks like a Quake 2 map that has hellspawn in it for some reason, they should be made to sit down and play Terror Cube. 0 Share this post Link to post

I always thought ZPack got an unfair rap, to be honest. It's one of those cases where everyone knows it's all shit aside from Vader's maps and Sector, but that's really not the case. Taking bias out of the equation and ignoring my own maps (which I'd obviously enjoy, or I'd not have made them) I certainly think Zippy's and farlowj's work stands out just as well as those. Even T667's Episode 3 map was quite playable and there were a few other nice entries that I don't remember offhand. I do reckon some of the maps in the set are awful, certainly, but that's no excuse to just dismiss the entire megawad out of hand bar one or two noable exceptions. 0 Share this post Link to post

In addition to what you mentioned (although farlowj's E2M5 is a bit love or hate), what I previously mentioned, or what is commonly referred to as good levels in the set, I thought all of T667's maps in the pack were good (although he made nothing in Episode 3 as your post tries to reference; his maps are: E1M3, E1M7, E2M3, E2M7, E2M9) and so were skillsaw's maps (E3M1 and E3M8, especially the latter). I liked your maps too, especially E2M1. I agree that it is often looked upon too harshly. 0 Share this post Link to post
dew Posted September 7, 2011 i think map21 (nirvana) is a great map. it has frenetic tempo, a few simple puzzles and it's a whole bunch of fun. it also has the awesomest speedrunning trick in doom2, the YK bars strafeglide. people bash it because it's a sandy map, disconnected and speedmappish, yet it pummels most of your precious e2/e3 maps into the ground. maps like nirvana paved the way to fun-oriented wads like scythe. 0 Share this post Link to post

MegaDoomer Posted September 7, 2011 Phobus said:@MegaDoomer: Indeed - it'd appear I meant E2M7. From my memory I do think this was the best T667 map in ZPack but personally I liked all of them, none were anything even close to garbage or worthless. 0 Share this post Link to post
jerrysheppy Posted September 7, 2011 The only map I remember thinking was bad in ZPack, period, was one I think was early in E2 that was just a bunch of spuriously detailed square rooms connected by hallways and doors. Basically your average amateurish map but with a veneer of floor or ceiling detail and maybe a few ZDoom features. I have no idea why they included it. I honestly think Vader did an unfair disservice to a lot of the mappers/maps in ZPack by releasing his maps separately. Yes there were one or two maps that were far below the quality of his, but when his maps (and only his maps) broke from the pack and were released separately, it let people frame the issue as "these maps are the only ZPack maps worth playing on their own [and thus everything else is shit]." 0 Share this post Link to post
