Any wads that give you additional weapons over long periods of time?

Recommended Posts

Just asking, I love wads that make you use what weapons you have for extensive periods of time before you attain more potent weaponry (ESPECIALLY wads that make you rely on plain ol' pistol and shotty, perhaps the chainsaw too).

If the chaingun is too powerful for you, I can only think of Mordeth.
MAP01 shotgun, berserk, chainsaw, rocket launcher BUT NO EXTRA ROCKETS
MAP02 shotgun, berserk, chainsaw
MAP03 shotgun, berserk, chainsaw, at the very end you may finally pick up a chaingun from one of the chaingunners
etc. SSG appears in the last two maps only - MAP05 and MAP06.

If the chaingun is fine, then SID, Darken2, and perhaps many more.

Thanks for the tips! I'll be sure to check those out.

And yeah, the chaingun is actually my favorite weapon, I just don't like levels that revolve around the chaingun still wind up giving shotgun shells you don't know what to do with. (as in, I like levels solely created for chainguns as much as the nest weapon, just that most of the ones I found still rely heavily on the shotgun.)

I deliberately rationed weapons on my Doom 2 ZDoom episode Hell Bent Episode 1.

It runs something like this:

MAP01: Pistol/bezerk/chainsaw
MAP02: (secret) shotgun
MAP03: shotgun
MAP04: (secret) chaingun
MAP05: chaingun
MAP06: (secret) SSG
MAP07: SSG
MAP08: (secret) RL
MAP09: Can't remember it was a secret map anyway from MAP03 anyway

Obviously, you carry over weapons from the previous maps.

In my project I'm rationing the fuck out of weapons too.

MAP01: Secret Berserk/Pistol/Secret Shotgun (near the end)
MAP02: Secret Chaingun (about 2/3 of the way in)
MAP03: SSG (near the end)/Secret Chainsaw
MAP04: Nothing
MAP05: Secret RL
MAP06: Secret PR
MAP07: Secret PR
MAP08: Nothing

Each episode ends with a Romero Head barrel telefrag room so the next level forces a pistol start.

I also try to make every level pistol-start completable (easy, really, I just chuck weapons that I expect the player to have from the previous levels in the first room or two or have the appropriate zombie very close by).

So basically you can't use pistol start?Damn it,I really love pistol start!

Most of Jodwin's maps. Pistol and regular shotgun are pretty much standard fare (on Doom II mapsets, and with monsters like mancs, revvies, Hell Knights and arachnotrons being thrown at you). You may get an early chaingun, but against said enemies (and WITHOUT) a backpack, the shotty is a better option overall.

You may even get an early RL, but the SSG, if available, will only be given as a "luxury" weapon when it will be mostly useless. On such maps, it's also rare to be given any energy weaponry, and you won't be able to "cheat" your way out by using chainsaw/berserk, either.

You can. I've just listed when your first get the weapons. MAP06 for example still has a chaingun, shotgun etc - it's just that it's the first time you can get a SSG.

ic2005 was a good map for slowly giving the player each weapon as they play through it. My own Coils of the Twisted Tale (ph_quik2.zip) works on a similar principle, although it pretends it's actually 11 seperate maps.
